지구지역학으로서의 한국학의 (불)가능성 - 보편담론을 향하여 - (The Im/possibility of Korean Studies as Glocalogy)

초록

이 글은 한국학이 지금 당면한 세계화라는 과제에 직면에 그 구호에 집착하지 않고 오히려 그 반대로 한국학의 장소성을 강조하여 새로운 방향을 모색하려고 것이다. 즉 장소를 갖는, 그러나 특수한 것에 매어있지 않은 한국학을 추구하자고 제안하는 것이다.
그 지름길은 한국학에서 생산된 지식이 보편성을 확보하는 데 있다. 서구 중심의 보편주의를 비판하는 동시에 한국이란 장소를 중시하면서도 특수성에 매몰되지 않고 보편성을 추구하는 이중의 과제를 감당하는 학문의 길이 곧 새로운 한국학이 가야 할 길이다. 그리고 이를 위해서는 한국이 처한 공간적 위치에 대한 각성을 통해 기존의 서구 중심의 지식구조를 재구성하는 일이 무엇보다 절실하다고 본다. 바로 이런 문제의식에서 ‘지구지역학(Glocalogy)으로서의 한국학의 재구성’이란 프로젝트를 시도해보려고 한다.
바로 이 구상은 한국에서의 한국학이 주체성과 실천성을 강화하는 특성이 있었다는 일제시대부터 내려온 유산과 맞닿아 있다. 이것이 종래에는 민족주의와 긴밀한 관계를 맺게 만들었지만, 지구지역학으로 재구성된 한국학은 지방적인 것, 지역적인 것 및 전지구적인 것을 하나의 차원으로 결합하는 학문인만큼 그로부터 자유로울 것이 분명하다. 이제 한국의 안과 밖에서 수행하는 새롭고 다차원적인 한국학은 저마다의 ‘장소를 갖고’ 구체적인 시간과 공간에서 ‘일어나는’ 구체적인 상황에 주체적으로 개입해야 한다. 그 과정에서 ‘소통적 보편성’을 획득할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The issue of Korean studies’ globalization or the strengthening of its international competitiveness has currently been raised as an urgent task in Korea. Strategies for this task have focused on promoting Korean studies, either quantitatively or qualitatively abroad, while at the same time, seeking recognition from outside Korea on academic accomplishments within Korea. At this point, I emphasize the placeness of Korean studies rather than clinging to the slogan of the globalization of Korean studies. In other words, I would like to suggest the reconstruction of Korean studies by recognizing placeness, without continuing to emphasize particularity.
In order to make this possible, knowledge production of Korean studies in Korea should attain universality. A new avenue of Korean studies should deal with double tasks of providing a critique of western-centered universalism, while at the same time, focusing on Korea as a place not by adhering to particularism, but by pursuing universalism. To achieve this goal, it will be crucial to reconstruct the western-centered epistemological structure through a re-examination of the spatial locus of Korea. With this issue in mind, I will attempt to offer a new avenue of Korean studies as Glocalogy.
This point suggests compatibility with a legacy of Korean studies, which characteristically strengthened subjectivity and practicality since the Japanese colonial period. This demonstrates how Korean studies is deeply tied with nationalism. However, Korean studies reconstructed by Glocalogy will propose to be free from issues of Korean studies as performing nationalism because it converges on regional, local, and global elements. Now, Korean studies from within and without Korea should autonomously participate in their own specific circumstances. When we attain universality, which will promote communication within the global community, we - who are located in the periphery - will be able to gather in a common “meeting place" for dialogue and exchange. It will be the true globalization of Korean studies. Even if this new framework has only a slight chance of being realized - and there is no guarantee of realization - we must still look for avenues to proclaim and institutionalize Korean studies as Glocalogy.oclaim and institutionalize Korean studies as Glocalogy.
