생명의 불꽃-북한 과학환상문학의 육체와 과학적 환상 (The Spark of Life-Flesh and Fantasy in North Korean Science Fiction)

초록

이 글은 홍순원의 「마지막 생명선」을 통해서 1960년대 북한 과학환상문학이 인간의 신체를 형상화하는 방식과 당시 북한 사회에서 주목받았던 학설과 소설의 관계를 검토한다. 과학환상소설인 「마지막 생명선」은 젊은 의학도가 인체 순환 체계의 중심핵이라 할 수 있는 ‘산알’을 발견하여 암을 정복한다는 내용으로 이루어졌다. 1965년 1월에 연재된 이 소설이 선택하고 있는 과학적 환상은 인체 내의 순환체계와 중심핵이라는 점에서 당시 북한 사회의 관심을 모았던 ‘봉한학설’에 기초한 것으로 판단된다.
북한에서 봉한학설이 동의학의 경락을 실증한 것으로 선전되었던 것처럼, 소설은 인간의 신체를 포착함에 있어서 신비로운 생명의 불꽃이 순환하는 하나의 우주로 인식한다. 이 소설에서 환상은 인간 신체에 대한 인식을 낭만적으로 전달하는 동시에 북한 과학환상문학의 특별한 성격을 보여준다. 하나는 무력한 대상으로 누워 있는 인간 육체라는 불편감으로부터 독자의 시선을 돌리고, 극적으로 산알을 제시함으로써 당대 북한사회의 욕망과 기대감을 표현한다는 것이다. 다른 한편으로 이 소설에서 환상은 소설 속의 소설이라는 구성과 겹쳐지며 봉한학설과 소설의 환상이 맞닿아 있으나, 여전히 소설의 상상이라는 경계를 만든다.
봉한학설이 퇴조하기 직전에 발표된 이 과학환상소설은 과학적 환상과 소설의 구성을 통해 비판의 위험으로부터 거리를 두고 그 거리만큼의 경계구역을 만들었다. 독자들은 현실 학설을 떠올리며 텍스트를 이해하는 동시에 그것이 어디까지나 ‘환상’임을 감안하며 향유한다. 이러한 측면에서 「마지막 생명선」은 1960년대 북한 사회의 기대와 세계 인정에의 열망, 현실과 소설 사이를 매개하는 환상, 무엇보다도 과학환상문학이 시도하는 상상력의 가능성이 교차하는 문제적인 텍스트다.

영어초록

This article examines the ways in which North Korean science fiction of the 1960s depicts the human body through the lens of Hong Sun-won’s The Last Lifeline and the novel’s relationship to theories that were popular in North Korean society at the time. A science fiction novel, “The Last Lifeline” tells the story of a young medical student who conquers cancer by discovering a “San-al” the central core of the human circulatory system. This novel, which was serialized in January 1965, is believed to be based on the “Bonghan theory,” that attracted the attention of North Korean society at the time because of its relation to the circulatory system and the central core of the human body.
Just as the theory was touted in North Korea as a demonstration of the meridians of Oriental medicine, the novel, in capturing the human body, recognizes it as a universe in which the mysterious spark of life circulates. In this novel, fantasy romanticizes the perception of the human body, while also demonstrating the special nature of North Korean scientific fantasy literature. On the one hand, the fantasy diverts the reader’s attention from the discomfort of the human body lying as a helpless object and expresses the desires and expectations of North Korean society at the time through the dramatic presentation. On the other hand, fantasy in this novel overlaps with the construction of a novel within a novel, creating a boundary between the Bonghan theory and the fantasy of the novel.
This scientific fantasy novel, published just before the decline of the Bonghan theory, distances itself from the risk of criticism through the composition of scientific fantasy and fiction, and creates a demarcation zone equal to that distance. Readers understand the text with the theory of reality in mind, while at the same time enjoying it with the understanding that it is only a ‘fantasy’. In this sense, “The Last Lifeline” is a problematic text that intersects the expectations of 1960s North Korean society and its desire for global recognition, the fantasy that mediates between reality and fiction, and, above all, the imaginative possibilities that scientific fantasy literature attempts to achieve.
