초록

이 글은 만해 한용운 문학의 사상적 기원을 불이론不二論에 두고 그 성격과 기원을 탐구하고자 한다. 또한 이런 사상적 특성이 그의 한시에 어떻게 형상화되는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 세부적인 목표는 한용운의 사상과 문학에 영향을 미친 『유마힐소설경강의』와 『십현담주해』의 불이론을 고찰하고 이 불이론이 그의 한시에는 어떻게 나타는지 살피는 것이다.
‘불이不二’는 선과 악, 미와 추, 성과 속, 번뇌와 열반, 지옥과 극락과 같은 상대적 개념의 차별을 넘어가는 평등하고 높은 사유의 세계를 가리킨다. 불교의 평등 개념은 현상적 이질성을 본원적 동질성으로 바라보는 것이다. 이는 한용운의 평등주의가 단순한 정치적․사회적 자유의 차원이 아니라 깨달음을 통해 모든 차별상이 사라지는 절대평등의 세계에 도달하는 경지를 말한다. 이런 사상은 『조선불교유신론』에서 착안은 되었으나 『유마힐소설경강의』와 『십현담주해』를 거치면서 보다 섬세하게 깊어진다. 그 결정적 표현 형태가 『님의 침묵』이다.
『유마힐소설경』(『유마경』)은 만해 사상에 큰 영향을 미친 경전이다. 「불도품」의 ‘행어비도行於非道’가 불이론의 핵심 개념이다. ‘보살이 부처님 가르침이 없는 곳으로 갈 수 있어야 부처님 가르침에 통달할 수 있다[若菩薩行於非道 是爲通達佛敎].’는 뜻이다. 부처님 가르침과 부처님 가르침이 이르지 않는 곳을 연결하는 게 보살의 길이며 이는 두 세계의 본질이 같다는 전제가 있어야 가능한 논리다. 보살은 여기서 중생으로 하여금 예토를 정토로 바라보게 하는 역할을 한다.
『십현담주해』(1926)는 동안 상찰 선사의 『십현담』에 만해가 주석을 단 것이다. 이 철학적 사유의 과정을 통해 시집 『님의 침묵』(1926)이 간행되었다 해도 무방하다. 두 텍스트 사이의 연관성이 그만큼 깊다. 총 10단계 중 아홉 번째 단계인 ‘전위귀轉位歸’에 불이론의 핵심이 나타나 있다. ‘짐승 몸으로 윤회의 길에 다시 뛰어들기[行於異路且輪回]’는 ‘중생이 부처’라는 불이론에 입각한 이타행이다. 대승보살이 자비의 마음으로 끌어안아야 할 모든 그리운 생명[님]이 거기 있기 때문이다.
불이론 사유는 그의 문학에 깊은 영향을 끼친다. 이 글은 불이론이 한용운 문학을 관통하는 중요한 원리임을 말하고 1차적으로 한시 분석을 통해 입증하고자 한다.
한용운의 문학사적 성취는 불이론 사상이 문학의 역설 개념과 결합하여 대승불교의 공감력 있는 목소리로 재탄생했다는 데 있다. 이것은 식민지 조국산천을 불국토로 장엄할 수 있는 사상의 혁신이었고, 한국근대불교를 쇄신하는 실천운동의 일환이었으며, 우리 문학 스스로 근대의 모순을 돌파하는 내재적 문제해결 방식이기도 했다.

영어초록

This article considers that the ideological origin of Manhae Han Yong-un's literature lies in the non-duality (不二) theory, and intends to explore it. In addition, this article attempts to examine how these ideological characteristics are embodied in his Chinese poetry. The detailed goal of this article is to examine the non-duality theory of the 『Vimalakirti Sutra』 and 『Annotation to the Ten Profound Verses』, which influenced Han Yong-un's thought and literature, and to examine how this theory was expressed in his Chinese poetry.
‘Non-duality’ refers to a world of equal and high thought that transcends the discrimination of relative concepts such as good and evil, beauty and ugliness, sacrilege and genus, passion and nirvana, and hell and paradise. The Buddhist concept of equality views phenomenal heterogeneity as fundamental homogeneity. This means that Han Yong-un's equalitarianism is not just a dimension of political and social freedom, but a state of reaching a world of absolute equality in which all discrimination disappears through realization. This thought was conceived in 『The Revitalizing Reformation of Chosun Buddhism (朝鮮佛敎維新論)』, but through 『Vimalakirti Sutra』 and 『Annotation to the Ten Profound Verses』 deepen more delicately. The decisive form of expression is 『The Silence of Nim』.
『Vimalakirti Sutra』 had a great influence on Manhae thought. The ‘行於非道’ in 「The Bodhisattva Path to the Buddha (佛道品)」 is the core concept of the Non-duality theory. It means “A Bodhisattva must be able to go to a place where the Buddha’s teachings do not exist, in order to master the Buddha’s teachings”. The path of the Bodhisattva is to connect the Buddha's teachings and places where the Buddha's teachings do not reach, and this is a logic that can only be achieved with the premise that the essence of the two worlds is the same. The Bodhisattva plays the role of making sentient peoples see the Dirty Land as the Pure Land.
『Annotation to the Ten Profound Verses』 (1926) is a commentary by Manhae on 『Ten Profound Verses』 by Dongan Sangchal. It is safe to say that the collection of poems 『The Silence of Nim』 (1926) was published through this process of philosophical thought. The connection between the two texts is that deep. The core of the non-duality theory is revealed in the ninth stage out of a total of 10 stages in 『Ten Profound Verses』. ‘Leading into the path of reincarnation with the body of an animal again [行於異路且輪回]’ is an altruistic act based on the non-duality theory that ‘beings are Buddhas’. This is because all the longed-for lives [Nim] that the Mahayana Bodhisattva should embrace with a heart of mercy are there.
Non-duality theory thinking had a profound influence on his literature. This article states that the non-duality theory is an important principle that penetrates Han Yong-un's literature and intends to prove it primarily through analysis of his Chinese poetry.
Han Yong-un's literary achievement is that the non-duality theory was reborn as a sympathetic voice of Mahayana Buddhism by combining it with the paradox concept of literature. This was an ideological innovation that could magnify the colonial country's land as a Buddha land, it was a part of a practice movement to renew Korean modern Buddhism, and it was also a way of solving problems inherent in our literature itself to break through the contradictions of modernity.
