슬로트의 인간 완성 및 자기수양 불가능성 논제 비판 (Criticizing Michael Slote’s Theses of the Impossibility of Human Perfection and Moral Self-Cultivation)

초록

본고는 도덕정감과 공감, 그리고 돌봄 윤리를 조합한 마이클 슬로트의 정감주의 덕윤리 이론 구조를 검토하고, 그가 주장하는 인간 완성 및 자기수양 불가론의 논리적미흡함을 지적하고자 한다. 개별 행위자의 도덕정감에서 도덕적 토대를 찾는 슬로트의 덕윤리는 현대에 중요한 개인의 주체성을 존중 가능한 장점이 있고, 더불어 공감과돌봄 욕망을 통해 일어난 이타적 행위에 초점을 맞추며 덕행의 실천적 규범성도 강조한다. 고대 아리스토텔레스 덕론의 현대적 적용이 부적절하다고 비판해 온 그는 최근고대 덕윤리의 핵심 개념인 인간 완성이나 자기수양 가정도 비현실적이라고 논하고있다. 그는 개인 내면에서 상반되는 덕성들이 동시에 존재할 수 없다는 가정으로부터인간 완성의 가능성을 부정하고, 개인의 노력을 통한 덕 수양의 믿음 역시 현대 심리학적 연구에 비추어 볼 때 비현실적이라고 주장한다. 본고는 그가 비판하는 아리스토텔레스 덕윤리의 인간 완성 개념을 고찰하고, 또 그가 철학사적 근거로 삼는 이사야벌린의 가치 다원주의를 검토하여 그의 논증과 견주어 봄으로써, 그의 논증이 인간 완성이 불가능하다는 결론을 내리기에 불충분함을 보이고자 한다. 다음으로 슬로트가자기수양론의 비현실성의 논거로 적용하는 심리학적 연구들이 철학적 논거로서 한계가 있음을 밝혀 그의 비판 근거가 미약함을 논하고자 한다.

영어초록

In this essay, I show the inadequacy of Michael Slote’s arguments for the impossibility of perfection and impracticality of moral self-cultivation.
For this aim, first, I briefly introduce the development of his sentimentalist virtue theory, which has woven the notions of virtue, moral sentiment, and empathy, along with care ethics for several decades. This investigation tells us that his virtue theory has a merit to entrust the moral foundation to agents’ inner states and thus respect their subjectivity, unlike eudaimonism that relies on the Aristotelian “agent- focused” notions of virtue. To strengthen the merit of his agent-based virtue theory, Slote recently argues against the ideas of human perfection and moral self-cultivation, which would constitute the essence of ancient virtue ethical approaches, including Confucianism. Such ideal postulates for moral self-improvement, according to him, can be disproven not only by assuming the possible conflicts between contrasting virtues, in an agent which would debunk the possibility of perfection, but also by contemporary psychological researches about moral education that doubts the feasibility of voluntary self-shaping. Slote’s attempt, if successful, would deny the significance of self-regarding moral cultivation with an aspiration for perfection, central to ancient views of human flourishing. I argue, however, that his arguments are not well-founded enough to discredit such notions of perfection and cultivation in our moral practice. The impossibility of perfection is hardly vindicated merely with his critical evidence of an unavoidable conflict between the virtues of frankness and tactfulness, given Aristoteles’s emphasis of practical wisdom (phronesis) residing in such individual virtues. Moreover, his reference to psychological researches is also unable to substantiate the impracticality of moral self-cultivation because of their limitations as empirical studies mostly based on children’s temporary behaviors. Contra Slote’s anti-teleological views, I believe, holding such notions of human perfection and self -cultivation in our minds is much more beneficial than abandoning them for us to become a virtuous person, which is the practical goal of virtue ethics.
