익산 미륵사의 공간구조와 3원 본존불 추정 (A Study on the Spatial Structure and the three main Buddha Statues of Mireuksa Temple in Iksan)

초록

이 논문은 익산 미륵사의 공간구조 특징, 3원 각각의 본존불을 추정하기 위한 試論의 성격이 짙다. 이를 위해, 우선 미륵사의 수평적·수직적 구조와 특성을 바탕으로 신앙 배경을 검토하였다. 미륵사 창건의 신앙 배경을 입증하기 위해 미륵사 가람의 영향을 받았을 것으로 추정되는 진표계 사원의 가람 배치를 덧붙여 살펴보았다. 그리고 마지막으로 미륵사 3원 본존불의 성격과 배치 양상을 추정하였다.
미륵사는 백제 무왕이 익산으로 천도하면서 왕권을 상징하기 위해 조영한 대사원이다. 이 사찰의 독특한 가람 배치는 미륵신앙을 구현하기 위한 용화산-사자사-미륵사로 이어지는 수직적 공간구조와 법화신앙을 구현하기 위한 서원-중원-동원의 수평적 공간구조의 결합으로 이루어진 것이다.
이러한 미륵사의 수직적·수평적 공간구조는 진표계 사원에 영향을 끼쳤다. 진표가 직접 중창한 금산사는 사역의 동편에 松臺(方等戒壇)와 미륵전을 배치하였다. 진표의 제자 영심이 중창한 법주사는 사역 서편에 珊瑚臺와 珊瑚殿(미륵전)을 배치하였다. 영심의 제자 심지가 창건한 동화사도 서향한 금당과 그 뒤편에 미륵보살이 전한 佛骨簡子를 모신 전각이 조영되었다. 이러한 공간구조는 진표의 미륵·지장신앙이 유행했던 고창 선운산 도솔암에서도 확인된다. 진표계 사원에서 일관되게 보이는 ‘상-미륵보살’과 ‘하-미륵불’의 수직 구조와 금당이 동편 또는 서편에 치우친 평면계획은 익산 미륵사의 영향이었다.
한편, 법화신앙 구현의 장소인 미륵사 3원의 본존불은 미륵사 동원과 사자사의 조응 관계, 미륵사와 시공간적으로 가장 가까운 곳인 금산사의 미륵보살의 공간(송대)과 미륵불의 공간(미륵전)이 사역의 동쪽에 치우쳐 있다는 점을 볼 때, 미륵사 서원-중원-동원에는 각각 과거불(연등불)-현세불 (석가모니불)-미래불(미륵불)이 봉안되었을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper presents a preliminary examination aimed at elucidating the spatial structure of Mireuksa Temple in Iksan and the significance of the main Buddha statues in each of its three monastery sections. To achieve this, I first explored the religious background of Mireuksa Temple by analyzing its horizontal and vertical spatial structures. Additionally, in order to demonstrate the religious background of the creation of Mireuksa Temple, I reviewed the layout of the temples lineage led by Monk Jinpyo, which was strongly influenced by Mireuksa Temple. Finally, I assessed the characteristics and placements of the main Buddha statues in the three monastery sections of Mireuksa Temple.
Mireuksa Temple was founded as one the symbols of the royal authority when King Mu (r. 600~641) of Baekje Kingdom moved the capital to Iksan. The the temple's lineage unique spatial layout integrates a vertical structure extending from Sajasa Temple to Mireuksa Temple, with Yonghwasn Mountain in the background, symbolizing faith in Maitreya. Furthermore, a horizontal spatial arrangement comprising three monastery sections expresses faith in the Lotus Sutra.
This combination of vertical and horizontal spatial arrangements at Mireuksa Temple influenced temples lineage led by Monk Jinpyo. For instance, Geumsansa Temple, reconstructed by Monk Jinpyo himself, was positioned Songdae (space for Maitreya Bodhisattva) and Mireukjeon Hall (space for Maitreya Buddha) on the eastern side. Similarly, Beopjusa Temple, rebuilt by Monk Yeongsim, a disciple of Monk Jinpyo, situated Sanhodae (space for Maitreya Bodhisattva) and Sanhojeon Hall (space for Maitreya Buddha) on the western side. Donghwasa Temple, founded by Monk Simji, a disciple of Monk Yeongsim, placed the Maitreya Buddha's space facing west on a lower level, constructing a hall atop it to enshrine the finger bones of the Maitreya Bodhisattva.
At Dosolam Temple on Seonunsan Mountain in Jeollabuk-do Province, where Monk Jinpyo’s Maitreya and Ksitigarbha faiths were widespread, the Maitreya Bodhisattva’s space was elevated while the Maitreya Buddha’s space was lower. This layout and vertical structural features found in the temples of lineage led by Monk Jinpyo are attributed to the influence of Mireuksa Temple in Iksan.
Moreover, considering the interconnected relationship between the eastern monastery section of Mireuksa Temple and the Sajasa Temple, as well as the spatial proximity of Maitreya Bodhisattva’s space and Maitreya Buddha’s space in Geumsansa Temple, which is the closest to Mireuksa temple in both time and space, it is conceivable that the past Buddha (Dipankara Buddha), present Buddha (Shakyamuni Buddha), and future Buddha (Maitreya Buddha) were each enshrined in western, middle, and eastern monastery section of Mireuksa Temple in Iksan.
