프로야구선수의 연봉 분포 및 불평등 실태 분석 (Analysis of the Salary Distribution and Salary Inequality of Professional Baseball Players)

This study attempted to find out the salary distribution and salary inequality of Korean professional baseball players. The subjects of this study were 786 players from 10 teams in the 2020 Professional Baseball Guidebook, including upbringing players and excluding foreign players. The study was summarized as follows.
First, the median annual salary and average annual salary of all 10 team’s players are about 30 million won and 100 million won, respectively, and the average is quite large. But looking at the low median value, it can be seen that a large portion of all players are in very poor salary conditions. The median and average salary increased significantly as the age of the athletes increased and as the career years increased. Salary by position increased in the order of pitcher, catcher, infielder, and outfielder. The outfielder's salary is higher than that of the pitcher.
Second, the Gini coefficient, including all clubs, is .629 and the Theil index is 1.440, which is relatively high in both scores compared to Korean general workers. Almost all of the players with low age and low career years have very low inequality due to low salaries, and as age and career years increase, inequality also increases. The inequality of pitchers is relatively low, but the difference in inequality according to position is not large.
Third, when the Theil index was decomposed and analyzed, the weight of the factors between the groups and the factors within the group was almost the same in the age and career years of players. However, in the club and position, the proportion of factors between groups was very low, and the proportion of factors within the group was very large.
It can be seen that the difference in salary between teams is very small and the salary difference within the teams is large. It can be seen that the salary difference in between positions is very small, and the salary difference within the positions is large. It is believed that understanding the salary distribution of professional baseball athletes and the phenomenon of salary inequality will be helpful in recognizing the importance of income in society as a whole.
