아잔타석굴 제 26굴 佛塔浮彫 佛倚坐像 고찰 (Contemplation of Seated Buddha Image Carved in Relief on Stupa in Ajanta Cave 26)

초록

인도 아잔타석굴 제 26굴의 불탑 정면에는 등받이가 있는 의자인 권좌에 앉아 설법 중인 등신대 붓다 이미지 1구가 조각되었다. 이 불의좌상의 특징과 의의를 고찰하기 위해 Ⅱ장에서는 의좌상의 기원과 전개 양상을 검토했다. 의자는 신석기시대 여성 토우의 자리로 등장한 이래 청동기·철기시대를 거치면서 지배자·권력자의 자리로 표현되며 높은 지위와 권위를 상징했다. 4세기 중반 로마 황제, 4세기 후반 그리스도, 5세기 후반 붓다가 권좌에 앉는 도상이 정립되었는데, 기독교·불교의 교주인 유일신이 권좌에 앉게 됨으로써 권좌의 절대성은 더욱 강화되었다. 이 가운데 권좌의 그리스도 도상은 聖父와의 신격 경쟁을 통해 성취된 역사적 산물로, 인도에서 불탑과의 관계에서 불상이 겪은 위상 변화에 시사점을 던져 준다. Ⅲ장에서는 아잔타석굴 제 26굴의 불탑 정면에 부조된 의좌상의 양식·성격 및 불의좌상과 병치된 대열반상의 관계를 논증했다. 예배당의 중심에 불탑을 세웠지만, 불탑의 얼굴에 해당되는 정면에 등신대 이상의 독존불상을 새긴 것은 불탑과 불상을 동등하게 인식한 그 당시 신앙의 발로라 할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 형식면에서 불탑이 우월하게 표현되었더라도 상징적인 측면에서는 붓다가 불탑의 핵심임을 드러냈기 때문이다. 그리고 대열반 거상을 병치시켜 열반의 의미를 신비로운 기적이자 불교적 이상의 완성으로 제시하는 한편, 붓다 대열반의 상징체인 불탑의 정면에 설법 중인 붓다의 형상을 새김으로써 그의 설법이 계속된다는 관념을 구현한 것으로 보았다. 26굴 불탑부조 불의좌상이 예배대상인 존상으로서는 비교적 이른 시기에 조각된 점을 고려하면, 이러한 굽타시대 불의좌상이 동아시아 의좌상의 모델이 되었을 개연성이 존재한다.

영어초록

In front of stupa in Ajanta cave 26, India, one full size of Buddha's preaching image sitting on the throne is carved in relief. In this article, the characteristics and meaning of the seated Buddha image carved in relief in front of stupa were contemplated. First, in Chapter II, the origin and the development pattern of the seated Buddha image were examined. It was identified that the throne is the symbol of powerful authority through the fact that ever since the chair was emerged as a seat for clay doll, the woman of New Stone Age, it has been expressed as a seat for ruler throughout the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, and through the pattern that later, the Roman emperors during middle of 4th Century, Christ during the later half of 4th Century and Buddha during the later half of 5th century sit on the chair having backrest. As the religious leaders of Buddhism and Christianity sit on the throne, the seat of absolute power established through Egypt and Rome since the prehistoric ages, making the authority symbolized by throne reach to its peak, the throne having backrest had been settled down as a throne of unique god or the god at the vertex position. In Chapter III, the style of seated Buddha image carved in relief in front of stupa was identified and the relation with the image of supreme nirvana put together with this seated image in the same cave were proved focusing on the relation between the stupa and the image of Buddha. For the reason that the stupa and the image of Buddha were put together, I viewed that it suggested the meaning of nirvana as a mysterious miracle and the completion of Buddhist ideal by making the statue of supreme nirvana and the concept that his sermon is continued was visualized by carving the image of Buddha in sermon in front of stupa, which symbolizes the nirvana of Buddha. Based on these results, I mentioned about the possibility describing the meaning of the iconography of seated Buddha image in the history of Buddhist sculpture that the seated Buddhist manage carved in relief on the stupa in Ajanta cave 26 carved as a sacred statue in relatively early period, which is the object of worship, would be a model of seated image in Eastern Asia includingthe Maitreya Buddha of Samhwaryung.
