소설 「페미토피아」에서 제기하는젠더 불평등 문제 (The Problem of Gender Inequality presented in Novel Femitopia)

초록

소설에서 제기되는 젠더 불평등(gender inequality)은 인간 사회에서 오랫동안 문제가 되어 왔을 뿐 아니라 바람직한 사회의 실현을 위해서도 반드시 해결해야 할 문제라 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 이 문제에 초점을 맞추어 소설 세계를 탐구해 보았다.
일단 소설에서는 생태주의와 페미니즘을 추구하면서 여성의 우월성이 사회를 주도하는 일종의 모계 사회라 할 이상국을 그려 나갔다. 그러나 남성이 차별과 억압을 받으며 살아가는 세상이 되었고, 이 젠더 불평등이 소설에서는 쉽게 해소될 수 없는 문명사회의 문젯거리로 대두한다. 그래서 소설에서는 불평등에 대한 반작용으로, 가부장제의 폐지로 말미암아 사라져 버린 父性을 회복하려는 지향성을 보여주며, 나아가 젠더 불평등을 극복할 비전을 녹색 이상촌인 향촌이라는 마을을 통해서 제시하였다.
향촌 사람들은 가부장제나 가모장제 사회에서 나타나는 위계질서를 형성하지 않은 가운데, 성차와 성역할을 인정하고 서로 존중하고 협조하며 살아가므로, 페미토피아가 안고 있는 젠더 불평등을 초월하는 비전을 보여준다. 소설은 앞으로 도래할지도 모를 여성 우월 사회를 상상하지만, 그러한 사회에서 나타날 수밖에 없을 젠더 불평등의 심각성을 제시하여 급진적 페미니즘의 허구성을 부각시키고 은연중 희화화하여 비판하는 효과도 거두고 있다.
이 소설은 문명과 생태계, 젠더 문제를 함께 다룬 현대 유토피아 소설의 가능성을 여는 수작으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This novel may be an utopia novel describing the highly developed cultural society with a view of ecofeminism in the periodical background of the latter half of the 21th century. This paper examined the problems of equality and inequality between men and women by noticing that the equality of sexes is issued in the novel.
The main contents of novel are the social aspect and accidents after the basis of ‘ideal nation for women’ was established. The writer suggests the core meaning of feminism philosophy and ecologism through the character's statements, and describes the ideal nation for women with justifying the rule and superiority of women.
Thus, the society dominated by radicalism feminism that women are superior to men, though nature ecosystem is harmonized with high-tech science culture. Instead of patriarchal system, the matriarchal system(maternal patriarchy) was fulfilled and woman prime minister governs a republic and women occupy the most of statues and jobs, hence men are repressed and discriminated by women like when women were suppressed by men under the patriarchy. Women's predominance in authority, social statue and role corresponds to the argument of radicalism feminism. The sexual violences by women, which symbolize the suppression of men, are increased not only because the number of men is fewer than the number of women, but also because the social structure allows that women rule and suppress men.
In order to recognize and improve such problems, the base of the equality of sexes should be established by rehabilitating the paternity which was disappeared due to the abolition of patriarchal system. Thus, a certain event in which a problematic character seeks for and rescues physical father is also developed.
In contrast to women's republic where matriarchy is operated, the green ideal village where an agricultural society is developed with preserving the patriarchy appeared in the novel. In this village, dubbed as Hayng Chon, hierarchy order shown in the society with patriarchy or matriarchy is not organized and both men and women acknowledge the difference of sex, and they respect and support each other. Hence it is the Hayng Chon which the various branches of feminism desire ultimately, and in this society no discrimination exists.
Such a suggestion of the model of harmony and equality of sexes may be the result of critical consciousness for the female chauvinism and also literary examination for the true meaning of the equality of men and women.
