준식의 불적목록 편찬과 그 의의 (Publication of Buddhist scriptures Catalog by Zun-sik and Its Historical Significance)

초록

준식(遵式)은 북송(北宋) 시대 천태(天宗) 산가파(山家派)의 핵심 인물로, 교행(敎行)이 원대하여 송진종(宋眞宗)에게 ‘자의(紫衣)’와 ‘자운(慈雲)’이라는 호를 하사받았다. 준식은 평생 천태의 중흥을 자신의 소임으로 삼고 염불과 천태 교학 강의를 멈추지 않았으며, 특히 참법(懺法)을 제정하고 예참(禮懺)에 정진하여 대중들에게 천축참주(天竺懺主)으로 불리었다.
준식은 참법 분야의 공헌 외에도 불적목록(佛籍目錄) 분야에서 탁월한 업적을 이루어 대량의 천태교적(天台敎籍)을 정리하고 교정하여 『천태교수함목록(天台教随函目錄)』과 『천태교관목록(天台教觀目錄)』의 2부 불적목록을 편찬하였다. 그는 불적목록을 편찬하기 위하여 목록의 체계를 정립하였는데 가장 특징적인 부분이 ’입장여부(入藏與否), 이인계서(以人係书)'를 분류법을 토대로 목록을 정리하였다는 것이다. 준식의 불적목록에서 정립된 체계는 중국 전통 불적목록의 의미와 기능을 확대하고 풍부하게 하는 역할을 하였다. 그는 불적목록을 편찬하기 위하여 대량의 교적 문헌을 정리하고 교정하여, 북송 천태종의 중흥과 중국 불교 문헌학의 발달에 공헌을 하였다.
『천태교수함목록』과 『천태교관목록』은 여러 가지의 의의를 지니고 있지만 크게 두 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 천태 교적을 중심으로 작성된 그의 불적목록을 통하여 북송 천태의 중흥을 이끌어 나간 준식의 사상적 관점을 파악할 수 있는 자료이다. 둘째, 준식이 불적목록을 편찬하면서 이전의 불적목록의 체계와 다른 독창적인 분류체계를 개발하여 그의 저서에 대입하였다. 이를 통하여 이전의 불적목록과 비교하였을 때 당시 천태교의 핵심 경적이 입장되어 있는 상황을 명목요연하게 나타내었고, 저자와 저술과의 종속관계를 명확하게 나타내어 주었다. 준식의 불적목록은 천태 경적을 비롯하여 당시 유통되고 있는 불교 경적의 목록화 작업 과정에 새로운 방향을 제시하였고 천태 불적의 중요한 근거자료로 활용된다.

영어초록

As one of the most important figures responsible for reviving of the Cheontae School(天台宗) during the North Song dynasty(北宋), Zun-sik(遵式) was an ardent devotee of Cheontae liturgy throughout his lifetime. Based on Zun-sik’s writings and activities, this thesis tries to analyze and understand the rationality of his historical role as well as his intention for refroming Cheontae Liturgy.
Zun-sik was a key figure in the Cheontae Mountain Family during the Northern Song period, and he was given the titles of “Ja-ui(紫衣)” and “Ja-woon(慈雲)” by Song Jin-jong(眞宗) due to his great teachings. Zun-sik took the revival of Cheontae as his duty for the rest of his life and did not stop lecturing on Yeombul(念佛) and Cheontaegyo, and in particular, he enacted Chambeop(懺法) and devoted himself to Yecham(禮懺), so he was called the cheonchukchanzu(天竺懺主) by the public.
In addition to his contributions in the field of Chambeop, Zun-sik has achieved outstanding achievements in the field of Cheontae's Buddhist Catalogs . He organized and corrected a large number of Cheontae register and compiled a two-part list of Buddhist records, “The list of Cheontae-Gyogwan(天台教觀目錄)” and “The List of Cheontae-Gyosuham(天台教随函目錄)”. He established a system of lists to compile a list of Buddhist records, and the most characteristic parts were “entry Tripitaka status(入藏與否)” and “Yi In-gye-seo(以人係书)” based on the taxonomy. The system established in Zun-sik's list of relics played a role in expanding and enriching the meaning and function of the Chinese traditional list of relics. In addition, he organized and corrected a large number of religious texts to compile the Buddhist list, contributing to the revival of the Northern Song and the development of Chinese Buddhist literature.
“The list of Cheontae-Gyogwan(天台教觀目錄)” and “The List of Cheontae- Gyosuham(天台教随函目錄)” have various meanings, but can be summarized in two main ways. First, it is a data that can grasp the ideological perspective of Zun-sik, who led the revival of the Northern Song Cheontae, through his list of Buddhist records written around Cheontae.
Second, while Zun-sik compiled the list of Buddhist Catalogs, he developed an original classification system different from the system of the previous list of Buddhist Catalogs and substituted it into his book. Through this, compared to the previous list, the situation in which the core horn of Cheontaegyo was entered at the time was nominal, and the subordinate relationship between the author and the author was clearly indicated. Zun-sik's list of Buddhist relics presented a new direction in the process of cataloging Buddhist horns in circulation at the time, including the Cheontae horn, and is used as an important basis for Cheontae's Buddhist Catalogs.
