≪혼불≫의 겁탈담론과 젠더-주체화 연구 (Rape Discourses in ≪Honbul≫ and Gender Subjectification)

초록

이 논문은 ≪혼불≫의 중요한 모티프임에도 불구하고 이와 관련된 연구가 거의 축적되지 않은 겁탈모티프를 분석함으로써 근대적 젠더-주체화과정을 살펴보고자 하는 시도이다. 여성에게 오염과 피해자화라는 재앙을 덧씌우는 겁탈이 남성에게는 입사의례역할을 하는 근대 가부장제 구조를 드러내고 이에 대한 여성인물들의 대응양식을 통해 여성의 능동성과 가부장제 이데올로기에 대한 반담론의 가능성을 탐색하고자 하는 것이다.
비가렐로의 겁탈의 계보학과 이브 세즈윅의 근대와 동성 사회성 이론을참조하여 소설 속의 겁탈이 정상과 질서 외부에 자리하는 예외적 일탈적음란범죄의 영역이 아니라, 근대의 남성주체화과정과 연동된 제도화된 폭력임을 드러내었다. 겁탈은 사랑과 결혼 혹은 신분해방이라는 외피를 입고실현되는 것이다. 사랑과 결혼 혹은 동거와 거래의 대상으로 여성인물을분할하는 동시에 겁탈로 이들을 통과하여 자신을 보충하고 완성하는 형이상학적 캐너벌리즘의 과정을 밝혀냄으로써 근대의 남성주체화과정과 그것이 토대하는 동성사회성을 추적해내었다.
또한 에바 일루즈 등의 로맨스 이데올로기와 깁슨-그래함의 담론전략을원용하여 겁탈과 대면하는 여성인물의 태도를 살펴봄으로써 피해자, 희생자를 넘어서는 여성주체화 궤적을 천착하고 이를 여가장되기와 사랑으로조명하였다. 결혼제도 속에 내장된 젠더폭력에 대한 자각에 토대한 ‘여’가장되기와 약자의 위치를 넘어 자신의 운명을 개척해나가는 여‘가장’ 되기에서 가부장제에 맞서는 잠재력과 근대적 주체의 가능성을 확인하였으며 사랑의 배면에 자리한 겁탈과 직면한 후, 오염과 전락에 대한 공포 없이 상황과 맥락을 구성하는 여성인물의 태도에서 자아를 재설정하는 능동성과겁탈스크립트를 균열시키는 반담론의 가능성 또한 간취할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Rape is one of the most meaningful motifs in Choi, MyeongHee's roman-fleuve,≪Honbul(Luminescence of Human Soul)≫, which has rarely been analysed in depth, though. This paper tries to analysis episodes of rape in the ≪Honbul≫ from the perspective of gender-subjectivity in modern society and to look for ways to overcome the patriarchal ideology and dominance, with which raped women were victimized and contempted. For the purpose, this paper focuses on the reactions of the raped women against the violence and oppression of the partriarchal society and seeks to set out some counter-narratives for gender-subjectivity, as well.
Rape is not simply such a exceptional and deviant crime as that it should be expelled to the outside of the normal and ordinary world of human society. It is a institutionalized violence against women with close connection to the male subjectivity, which is disclosed in Choi's novel. According to the radical feminism, sexual violence and offence, bisexual love, and prostitution are not different from each others, in that they are all same in their essence. Rape is carried out under the name of marriage, love or abolition of class distinctions. The masculine has power to divide women into object of their love and marriage, or object of sex and transaction, and to subjectify themselves to construct their own male-homosocial society(Männerbund).
The female characters of the novel confront with such patriarchal power in various ways. They refuse to remain as victims of the rapes.
They refuse to obey the solemn imperatives of sexual impurity based on the patriarchal ideology trying to be the subjects of their own lives.
The main factors that enable them to subjectify themselves are love and becoming female heads of household. They come to realize gender-violence deeply hidden in the marriage system, so that some can transfer the oppression into love and mutual caring, and that the others try to make their own lives and destinies as real heads of household. Tracing the narrow paths they take along, this paper can have such conclusions: firstly, the female characters who have confronted with oppression prevailing in the whole society, are not afraid of being shamed of loosing chastity, and have potentialities to stand against the oppression and to be real subjects. Secondly, they can construct their own situation and context by themselves and make counter-narratives for re-establishing their own identities and for cracking and overcoming the rape scripts which have suffocated womens for almost whole history of human being.
