조선후기 불교사 연구 성과의 검토와 과제 (Review and Task of Result of Study on Buddhist history in the late Chosun Dynasty)

초록

[국문요약] 최근 조선후기 불교사 연구는 양적 질적 증가추세를 보이고 있다. 식민사학의 영향과 부정적 시각에도 불구하고 불교탄압 일변도의 불교정책을 재검토했고, 승려의 부역이 조선후기 수취체제의 변화 속에서 검토되어 그동안 불교계에 대한 맹목적인 수탈과 착취라는 시각에 의문이 제기되기도 하였다. 승려의 신분 역시 천민으로 인식했던 이전의 부정적 연구시각을 재검토하는 계기가 마련되기도 하였다. 불교계의 法統과 禪敎學에 대한 연구와 교육의 유행은 이전 시기의 불교와는 뚜렷한 차별화를 나타내기도 하였다. 아울러 불교서적 간행뿐만 아니라 寺誌검토를 통해 조선불교사의 복원과 그 독자성을 규명하기도 하였다.
한편 조선후기 불교사 연구는 일련의 과제를 해소해야 한다. 첫째는 부정적 연구시각이다. 그동안 선입관과 관심의 부족이 조선후기 불교사 연구를 부진하게 했고, 다양한 연구의 축적을 가로막았다. 둘째, 시대에 대한 명확한 인식이다. 조선후기 불교는 확실히 조선전기보다는 다채롭게 전개되고 있었다. 전란을 극복하는 과정에서 불교존립의 근거를 확보했고, 폐허가 된 불교계를 부흥시키기 위해 선교학을 정립시켰고, 법통을 확립했다. 문집과 비문, 법맥강조는 전란을 거친 지배층의 동향 속에서 태동하기도 하였다. 조선후기 불교계의 전개가 내재적 요인으로만 설명될 수 없는 부분이기도 하다. 더욱이 임진왜란 이후 인구감소, 자연재해, 경작지의 황폐화 등은 사회경제적 변화와 혼란을 필연적으로 잉태할 수밖에 없었다. 요컨대 조선후기 불교사에 대한 객관적 연구는 시대상황의 이해 속에서 이루어졌을 때 다양성과 주체성을 규명할 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.

영어초록

The recent study on Buddhist history shows qualitative and quantitative increase. Despite effects of colonial history and negative perspective, Buddhist policy of total oppression of Buddhism is reviewed again and forced labor of monks was reviewed within the change of the collection system, raising the questions from the perspective of devoted plunder and exploitation of the Buddhist society so far. This established a background for reviewing again the prior negative perspective of research recognizing the social title of monk as being of the lowest class. The popularity of study and education about religious tradition and missiology of the Buddhist society showed clear difference from the Buddhism in prior times. More, through publication of Buddhist books and history of temples, Chosun Buddhist history is restored and its independence is explained.
On the other hand, the study of the Buddhist history in the late Chosun Dynasty has series of task to solve. The first is the negative perspective of the study. So far, stereotypes and lack of interest caused research on the Buddhist history in the late Chosun Dynasty to be done poorly and prevented accumulation of various studies. Second is clear recognition about the period. Buddhism in the late Chosun Dynasty clearly spread more diversely than during early Chosun Dynasty. In the process of overcoming the chaos of the war, the basis for the existence of Buddhism was procured, missiology to grow the Buddhist society which had been destroyed was set up and a religious tradition was established. Emphasis on collection of works, epitaph and religious context were born in the midst of trend of the leading class which passed the chaos of war. The spread of the Buddhist society in the late Chosun Dynasty cannot be explained only by internal element. More so, reduction in population, natural disaster and destruction of farming lands after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 inevitably conceived socioeconomic changes and confusions. Namely, objective study on Buddhist history in the late Chosun Dynasty is thought to be able to explain the diversity and identity when it is done under the understanding of circumstances of the era.
