소태산의 깨달음과 법신불신앙운동 (So-tae-san's Enlightenment and the Movement of Belief in Dharma-kāya Buddha)

초록

최근세 한국불교의 성격은 시대사명의 자각과 그 실현을 위한 개혁불교운동이라 할 수 있는바, 이러한 개혁운동의 하나로서 소태산은 26세(1916년)에 진리에 대한 큰 깨달음을 얻고 원불교를 개창하여 ‘법신불신앙운동’을 전개한다. 당시 일제에 국권을 빼앗기고 극심한 무력탄압정책에 억눌려 있던 한국 민중들에, 그것은 한 개인의 깨달음이나 일개 종단의 신앙운동 차원을 넘어서서 민족구원의 종교적 메시지의 출현이라 볼 수 있다. 그는 『조선불교혁신론』의 저술을 통해 종래의 불상숭배의 허구성과 기복위주의 비합리적 불공법을 비판하고, 법신불신앙과 진리적 불공법을 제창한다. 신앙, 수행, 교화제도 등 전면에 걸친 소태산의 불교혁신사상은, 직접 민중의 삶속에서 구체적 실천운동으로 전개되어 오늘에까지 이르고 있으니 그것이 바로 원불교의 ‘법신불신앙운동’이다.
원불교에서는 최고 종지로서의 ‘법신불 일원상(○)’을 본존으로 모신다. 이때 법신불(Dharma-kāya Buddha)이란 우주의 궁극적 진리(實在) 그 자체를 佛로 본 것으로서, 그것은 진리의 체성뿐 아니라 무한덕상과 부사의업용까지를 동시에 포함한 통일자로서의 진여실상을 지칭한 것이다. 이러한 의미에서 소태산은 불상숭배를 넘어선 법신불 일원상숭배, 즉 이ㆍ지ㆍ비(理智悲)가 충만한 법신불신앙운동을 주창했던 것이다. 이러한 ‘법신불 일원상’을 원불교에서는 신앙의 대상으로 모심과 동시에 수행의 표본으로 받들어 신앙과 수행의 양문을 열어놓고 있다. 이처럼 불교혁신운동의 근본이념으로서 소태산에 의해 전개된 원불교의 법신불신앙운동은 불타관의 발달사에 비춰볼 때 간과할 수 없는 의의와 특징을 지닌다.

영어초록

Won Buddhism has been set up and developed by So-tae-san, Bak Jyung-bin(1891-1943), who had realized Buddha's truth and devoted his whole life to the religious calling in turmoil and suffering in the Korean modern society from the end of 19th century to the mid 20th cent. As one of Buddhistic revolutionary activities, So-tae-san had gotten awakened spiritually and created Won-Buddhism, that was the movement of belief in Dharma-kāya Buddha. To Korean people who had been deprived of sovereignty and suppressed by the ruthless and colonial policy of Japan, this was an appearance of religious message of national salvage beyond an individual awakening or a movement of just one religion.
So-tae-san proposed the following in his book Innovation of Chosun Buddhism. ① He criticized the falsehood of worship of Buddha's statue and irrational method of offerings toward Buddha, and suggested faith of Dharma-kāya Buddha and truthful method of offerings toward Buddha as alternatives. ② And he advocated harmonious practices by threefold training, (shīla, sāmadhi, prajṅā), for the way of completion of whole personality beyond deflection and adherence to any particular sectarian practice. ③ By emphasizing on modernization, popularization, and habituation, he encouraged the old traditional unworldly Buddhism to go into people's life and reborn as dynamic and energetic Buddhism that can contribute to the society and the history.
In Won Buddhism, the symbol, ○(Ir-won sang), indicates the ultimate truth itself of the universe, and it means Buddha-Tathāgata as unification including essence and virtue and function of truth. Especially it is filled with not only truth but also wisdom and mercy.
Won Buddhism considers Dharma-kāya Buddha(〇, Ir-won-sang) as the objects of faith, and the standards of practices. So the worship of Dharma-kāya Buddha in Won Buddhism, consists of two gates of faith and practice.
These movements of belief in Dharma-kāya Buddha developed by So-tae-san, as the activity of Korean revolutional Buddhism, has significance and feature that cannot be overlooked in the history of development of Buddha-worship. On the other hand, there still remains some hermeneutic and practical tasks to be solved in order to establish an ideal faith of Dharma-kāya Buddha in the future.
