高麗時代 佛腹藏의 形成과 意味 (Consecration of Buddhist Images in the Goryeo Period)

초록

한국 불교미술에 있어 불상 안에 봉안되는 物目과 이때 설행되는 의식은 腹藏이란 용어로 지칭된다. 상의 내부에 봉안돼 있어 눈에 보이지 않는 腹藏物은 상의 형상이나 상에 대한 기록의 분석만으로는 복원하기 힘든 당대인들의 불상에 대한 인식을 알려주는 귀중한 자료이다. 한국의 佛腹藏은 사리신앙에 기탁하여 상의 신성성을 확보하려 했던 간다라 불상의 사리봉안과 차이가 있으며, 臟器模型의 봉안을 통해 상의 物性을 지우고 인간의 신체와 유사한 성질을 부여하려 했던 중국불상의 경우와도 다르다. 선행연구에서는 五寶甁을 중심으로 삼는 한국 불복장의 구성형식이 조선시대에 성문화된 『造像經』을 충실히 따른 결과라고 일찍부터 지적돼 왔다.
이 글은 현재까지도 설행되는 불복장의례의 원형이 늦어도 고려 중기인 12-13세기에는 형성됐을 가능성을 논증했다. 이를 위해 고려후기의 문헌기록, 고려 중후기의 복장물, 그리고 조선시대간행된 『造像經』의 다양한 판본에 빠짐없이 인용된 『妙吉祥平等祕密最上觀門大敎王經』(T1192)을비교하여 종합적으로 분석했다. 『妙吉祥平等祕密最上觀門大敎王經』은 遼 興宗과 道宗 통치기에 황실의 후원을 받으며 활동했던 中印度 摩揭陀國 출신의 譯經僧 慈賢에 의해 한역된 인도 후기 瑜加密敎 경전이다. 번역 직후인 11세기 중후반에 이미 적극적으로 수용되어 內蒙古와 遼西 지역에 건립된불탑에 새로운 도상적 전거를 제공했다. 『高麗大藏經』에는 入藏되지 않은 이 경전은 불서를 통한 문화교류가 활발했던 11세기 말에서 12세기 초 무렵에 요에서 고려로 전래된 것으로 추정된다.
고려시대의 불교도들은 이 경전의 권1에 서술된 五甁灌頂을 轉用하여 고려 특유의 불복장의례를 고안해냈다. 阿闍黎의 의례 행위를 통해 加持된 五甁은 본래는 밀교 행자에게 灌水하기 위한의식구이다. 그러나 고려시대 불교도들은 아사리가 복잡한 가지절차를 거쳐 만들어낸 오병을 상안에 안치하고, 그 공간을 반영구적으로 봉인시켰다. 이와 같은 안립의 행위는 텅 빈 공동에 불과할 상의 내부 공간을 此岸에 실현된 붓다의 가지력이 봉인된 腹藏으로 변환시키는 상징적인 의미가있다. 더불어 金剛界五方佛을 상징하는 五寶甁을 상 안에 안립함으로써 소우주로서의 상을 대우주로서의 붓다와 相應시켰다. 이는 行者와 佛 사이의 합일을 목적으로 삼았던 인도 밀교의 종지가 상의 神聖化에 적용된 사례로 해석된다.

영어초록

In Korean Buddhist art, the term bokjang refers to both the ritual of image consecrationand objects enshrined within inner recesses of Buddhist images during the ritual. Storedinside the images and thus not visible from the exterior, the enshrined objects provide anopportunity to examine the perception of Buddhist images, which is not easy to grasp byexamining the appearance of or textual records of the images alone. The composition ofthe bokjang items, which centers on the ‘five vases,’ differentiates the Korean consecrationritual from those practiced in other parts of Buddhist Asia. It is different from the Gandhāranpractice of installing a relic inside the uṣṇīṣa of a Buddha image in an attempt to transformthe latter into a legitimate object of worship. It is also different from that of China, duringwhich models of internal organs were enshrined within inner recesses of Buddhist images toinfuse them with the qualities of the human body. Previous studies have pointed out that thedistinctive composition of the bokjang items is based upon Josang gyeong, or the Scriptureon Making Buddha Images, a ritual manual of Korean origin that was codified in the JoseonDynasty.
The present study argues that the core of the image consecration ritual in Korea, whichpersists to date, dates back to no later than the 12th to 13th century during the mid Goryeoperiod, and was formed by appropriating the abhiṣeka ritual for an Esoteric Buddhistpractitioner. It comparatively examines textual records from the late Goryeo period, thebokjang items yielded from Buddhist images dating from the mid and late Goryeo period and Myogilsang pyeongdeung bimil choesang gwanmun daegyowang gyeong, or the Scriptureof Triumphant Meditation of Secrets of the Auspicious Sameness, Great King of Tantras(T1192), which is cited in various editions of Scripture on Making Buddha Images publishedin the Joseon Dynasty. The Scripture of Triumphant Meditation was translated into Chineseby the monk Cixian, who hailed from Magadha in central India and worked under imperialsupport during the reigns of Emperor Xingzong and Emperor Daozong of the Liao Dynasty.
Soon after its translation in the 1060s, it was well-received by the Liao Buddhist, offeringscriptural basis for new iconographical motifs appearing on Buddhist pagodas built inthe Inner Mongolia and the western part of the present-day Liaoning Province. My studysuggests that this scripture, which is not included in the Tripiṭaka Koreana, was introducedto Goryeo from the Liao around the late 11th to early 12th century, when vigorous culturalinteractions were made between the two states through exchanges of Buddhist texts.
Goryeo Buddhists appropriated the consecration with water of the five vases prescribedin the first fascicle of the Scripture of Triumphant Meditation to create their own imageconsecration ritual. The five vases, given spiritual power through ācāryas’ ritual behaviors,were originally ritual implements meant to be used to pour water on the head of an EsotericBuddhist practitioner during the abhiṣeka. However, Goryeo Buddhists placed the fivevases made by ācāryas through complex ritual procedures within the Buddhist image, whichwas then sealed eternally. This ritual action has the symbolic meaning of transforming theempty inner space of the Buddha image into a sealed space empowered with the Buddha’sgrace and virtues. The microcosm of the image is thus made to correspond to the macrocosmof the Buddha through the enshrinement of the five vases symbolizing the five directionalBuddhas of the Diamond Realm within the image. This is a case in which one of centraltenets of Esoteric Buddhism, the unification of the practitioner and the Buddha through ritualpractices, is appropriated in the making of Buddhist images.
