예술의 언어와 상징의 불투명성 (The Languages of Art and the Non-Transparency of Symbols)

초록

이 글의 목적은 굿맨의 상징예술론에 제기되는 ‘불투명성’ 문제의 소재를 밝히고, 굿맨이 주장하는 예술의 ‘인지적 효력’을 ‘기호적 경험’의 본성에관한 체험주의의 해명을 통해 보완하는 데 있다. 굿맨은 과학과 예술의 연속성을 주장함으로써 전통적인 미학이론과 전기 분석철학이 가정했던 의미/인지, 정서/감정의 오랜 이분법적 구도를 거부한다. 대신 우리가 예술작품을 해석할 때, 예술적 상징에는 규약적이거나 기술적인 다른 상징들과 달리 ‘미적 징후’의 현상으로 드러나는 불투명성이 있다고 강조한다. 그러나 비어즐리를 비롯한 굿맨의 비판자들은 그러한 불투명성으로 인해 예술의 가치를 ‘인지적 효력’의 관점에서 평가할 수 없게 된다고 주장한다. 특히 그들은 예술작품에서 ‘예화’의 지칭체계를 적용할 때 드러나는 현저한 불투명성을 비판한다. 이 문제에 필자는‘기호적 경험’에 대한 체험주의의 해명을 통해, 기호적 경험이 본성상 불안정/ 불완전한 불투명성을 갖는다고 밝힌다. 기호적 경험은 기표의 물리적인 유한성과 기호적 ‘사상’의 본성적 파편성 때문에 필연적으로 기호의 변형과 증식, 소멸을 동반하는 기호의 ‘전이’ 현상을 낳는다. 그렇지만 체험주의적 해명에 따르면 기호적 경험은 물리적 경험에 토대를 두고 확장되며, 여기서 제공되는 물리적 경험의 ‘공공성’이 기호적 불투명성에도 불구하고 소통/해석 가능한 토대를제공한다. 필자는 이러한 해명을 통해 굿맨이 예술의 상징체계를 통해 밝히려고했던, 의미 창조와 이해의 중요성이 더욱 설득력 있게 보완될 수 있다고 본다.

영어초록

The main purpose of this paper is to reveal the source of the problem of “nontransparency” of Goodman’s theory of art symbols, and to put new lights on the significance of “cognitive efficacy” in terms of the languages of art, drawing on the experientialist account of the nature of “symbolic experience.” By asserting the continuity of art and science, Goodman repudiates the longstanding dichotomy between cognition/meaning and emotion/affectivity that both traditional aesthetics and early analytic philosophy have cherished. Instead, Goodman emphasizes that when we interpret a work of art with symbols, nontransparency of symbols inevitably comes in. That is, nontransparency is just derived from the “symptoms of the aesthetic,” which are different from the conventional or descriptive symbols. However, Beardsley and others argue that it is not quite clear how the obscure symbols can be connected closely to the “cognitive efficacy.” Their criticisms are mainly focused on the nontransparency occurring in the application of “exemplification” to referential functions, which would result in multiple and complex interpretations of an artwork, thereby making the evaluation of artwork in terms of cognitive efficacy impossible.
Drawing largely on the experientialist account of symbolic experience, I argue that the symbolic experience is unstable/incomplete in nature. The symbolization should give rise to the “metastasis of signs,” which results from the finitude of signifiers as physical objects and the partiality of symbolic “mapping.” The metastasis of signs implies that symbolic meanings are all subject to modification, multiplication, and vanishment. Nevertheless, we all are capable of communicating with each other by means of those symbols, since we all humans share “the commonality of experience” which is salient at the bodily/physical level of experience as “the meaning base” of differentiated symbolic meanings. Therefore, I suggest that this experientialist account of symbolic experience may show the source of the nontransparency problem of Goodman’s theory of art symbols, and open up a possibility of a more convincing account of the way how meanings are created, and at the same time the significance of understanding by means of the languages of art.
