초록

이 논문은 지난 100여 년 동안 간행된 ‘한국불교통사’를 비판적으로검토하고 교재로 사용할 수 있는 ‘한국불교사’의 집필을 제안하기위한 글이다. 새로운 한국불교사 교재의 편찬을 위해서는 불교 사관과 시대구분과 함께 교단사로서 불교사, 교리사로서 불교사, 사상사로서 불교사, 예술사로서 불교사의 범주와 분류를 확보할 필요가있다. 그러기 위해서 지난 100여 년 동안 ‘한국불교사 교재’로 간행된대표적인 개설사 내지 통사류인 권상로의 『조선불교약사』, 김영수의『조선불교사』, 김영태의 『한국불교사』, 정병삼의 『한국불교사』를 분석해 보았다. 이들 저작들은 시대적인 요청과 한계 속에서 집필된것이어서 저마다 장점과 단점, 특장과 한계를 지니고 있다.
새로운 『한국불교사』 교재의 집필을 위해서는 이들 저작들의 장점을 극대화 하고 단점을 극소화 하는 방향으로 나아가야 할 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 ‘한국불교사’의 목차를 어떻게 구성하고 내용을 어떻게 수록해야 할까. 아무래도 이들 저작들의 장점을 좀더 강화하고 단점을 보다 약화하는 방향으로 나아가야 것이 바람직 할 것이다. 학자적인 전문성과 일반적인 대중성을 겸비한 『한국불교사』 교재를 간행하기 위해서는 불교사의 주요 방법과 기본 문법을 갖춰야할 것이다. 새로운 『한국불교사』 교재는 시대구분의 방법과 역사서술의 문법, 사관과 주체, 주제와 쟁점, 학통과 인물, 사회와 문화 등등을 반영해 이루어져야 하기 때문이다.
종래에 간행된 한국불교사 교재들의 기술 방법론을 비판적으로 검토하고 전향적으로 수용하여 구성 목차와 수록 내용을 기획할 수있을 것이다. 먼저 교단사로서 불교사, 교리사로서 불교사, 사상사로서 불교사, 예술사로서 불교사의 범주로 분류하면서 ‘서설’의 한국불교사를 어떻게 기술할 것인가?에서 중도사관과 시대구분, 제Ⅰ 장의 사국시대: 전래와 수용 및 공인과 유통시대, 제Ⅱ장의 남북국시대: 민족불교와 한국불교의 완성과 정립 시대, 제Ⅲ장의 고려시대: 심화와 확장 및 내화와 외화 시대, 제Ⅳ장의 조선시대: 자립과자생 및 선지와 교문 시대, 제Ⅴ장의 대한시대, 국난과 법난 및 재구와 부흥 시대로 목차를 구성해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
이어 ‘서설’에서는 교단사, 교리사, 사상사, 예술사로서 불교사의 통섭에 입각해 사국과 남북국 및 고려와 조선 그리고 대한 시대 교단의 내용과 특징을 기술할 것이다. 제I장의 고구려불교, 백제불교, 가야불교, 신라불교의 내용과 특징-교학문화, 제II장의 통일신라불교, 대발해불교, 후삼국불교의 내용과 특징-교학문화, 제Ⅲ장의 고려불교의 내용과 특징-주교종선(主敎從禪), 교학문화와 선종문화, 제IV장의 조선불교의 내용과 특징-주선종교(主禪從敎), 선종문화와교학문화, 제V장의 대한불교, 대일항쟁기불교, 남한불교, 북한불교의 내용과 특징을 담아낼 것이다. ‘결어’에서는 한국불교사를 어떻게 이해할 것인가?를 통해 나아갈 방향성을 제시해 보려고 한다.
이러한 점들을 고려하면서 새로운 한국불교사 교재의 목차를 구성하고 내용을 수록할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper is written to propose a new textbook on Korean Buddhism by critically examining the textbooks on Korean Buddhist history used for the last 100 years. The first mission is the categorization of different kinds of Buddhist history; that is, Buddhist history as history of religious orders, doctrines, thought, and art.
To accomplish this, we examined representative textbooks on the history of Korean Buddhism in the last 100 years, such as Brief History of Joseon Buddhism by Sangro Kwon, History of Joseon Buddhism written by Youngsoo Kim, History of Korean Buddhism by Youngtae Kim, and History of Korean Buddhism by Byungsam Jung. We noticed that because these books were made according to their needs, and because they had certain political restrictions in their ages, each of them had their own good points, bad points, specialties, and limitations. Therefore, to create a new textbook on the history of Korean Buddhism, we found it necessary to minimize the bad points and maximize the good points of these prior textbooks. Then, how should we constitute the table of contents and subject matter to suffice for today's needs? The new textbook needs to have both scholarly professionalism and public popularity. This requires reflecting on new historical periodization, historical narrative, historical views, main body of the history, subject matter, issues, scholastic mantle, figures, society, and culture.
This new approach can be made by critically examining the methods the previous textbooks used in order for the new textbooks to develop their contents. By doing this, we will be able to categorize Buddhist history into these parts: religious orders, doctrines, thought, and art.
Then, we will organize the table of contents. In the introduction, the question of “how will we write history?” will be raised, and then the method of the mid-way historical view and periodization will be introduced. The first chapter will cover the Four Kingdoms period when Buddhism was first introduced, received, and officially recognized in Korea. The second chapter will discuss the South-North States period when Korean Buddhism was developed into a racial religion. The Goryo dynasty period, when Buddhism was escalated to a higher level and expanded internally and externally, will be covered in the third chapter.
The fourth chapter will describe the Joseon dynasty period, when Buddhism became independent and self-sufficient under the guidance of enlightened teachers in several religious orders. The colonization of Korea and oppression and restoration of Buddhism in the Korean empire will be discussed in the fifth chapter. Then we will now start to write the text. The introduction will describe the features of Buddhist orders in the Four Kingdoms, South-North States, Goryo, Joseon, and Korean Empire periods according to the harmonized perspectives of Buddhist history. In the first chapter, the cultures of Buddhism in the Goguryo, Baekje, Gaya, and Silla kingdoms will be introduced. The second chapter will discuss the features and Buddhist cultures of the United Silla, Great Balhae, and Late Three Kingdoms periods. The third chapter will describe the doctrines-oriented Seon, Buddhist doctrine, and Seon culture of Goryo Buddhism. In the fourth chapter, Seon-oriented doctrine, Seon culture, and Buddhist doctrine of the Joseon dynasty will be introduced. The fifth chapter will concentrate on the Korean Empire, the period of resistance movement toward Japan, South Korea, and North Korea. Finally, in the conclusion, the focus of direction is going to be suggested by raising the question of “how should we understand Korean Buddhism?” These will be what we will consider in constituting the contents of the new textbook on Korean Buddhism.
