<야래자설화>와의 관계 속에서 본 <불씨와 동삼> -불 신앙에 관한 비교민속을 겸하여- (A Study on from the perspective of )

초록

본고는 ‘불 신앙’을 바탕으로 생겨난 설화 <불씨와 동삼>이 전승되는 구체적인 실상을 살피면서, 그것이 <야래자설화>의 영향을 받아 구조와 의미가 변하여 현재의 전승 모습을 갖게 되었음을 밝히기 위하여 작성된 것이다.
우선, 구전자료들을 이야기의 핵심 요소의 변화에 따라 <현장 추격형>(A형)과 <명주실 추적형>(B형)으로 대별하고 전자를 다시 세 개의 자료군으로 나눈 뒤, 네 자료군들이 내용상 어떤 특징을 보이는지 살폈다. 이를 토대로 이 설화의 기본적인 의미를 다음 네 가지로 추출하였다. 첫째, ‘집안의 불의 간수는 여성이 담당하며, 여성이 어떠한 어려움에도 불구하고 불을 지켜야 한다.’는 우리의 전통적인 민간신앙과 관습이 드러난다. 둘째, 불씨를 간수하면 그 집안이 복을 받는다는 사람들의 믿음을 반영한다. 셋째, 며느리의 입사식담의 성격을 지닌다. 넷째, 사악과 부정을 제거하며 생식을 소생하는 불의 의미 외에도 가계의 계승과 한 집안의 복을 의미를 내포한다.
다음으로, ‘불씨 회복’의 과정이 원래는 이야기 속에 들어 있어야 마땅함을 입증하기 위하여 비교민속적인 관점에서 우리와 주변 민족의 설화 및 불 신앙 등을 살폈다. 그 결과 ‘매년 정기적으로 묵은 불을 끄고 새불[新火]을 일으키는 불 의식’이 널리 퍼져있음을 확인하였고, 이를 통해 이야기 결말의 ‘동삼 얻어 부자되기’보다는 ‘불씨의 회복’이 더 원래적인 요소임을 추정하였다.
또한, 결말의 ‘동삼 얻어 부자되기’가 <야래자설화>의 영향에 의한 것임을 입증하기 위하여, 이와 관련된 야담과 구전민담을 제시하며 그 타당성을 검토하였다. 그리고 두 설화가 접변할 수 있는 근거로서, <불씨와 동삼>에 <야래자설화>의 내용이 공통된 것이 많다는 점, 두 나무를 마찰하여 불을 일으키는 것과 총각이 오줌을 누어 불을 끄는 것 등이 남녀의 성적인 교합을 의미하는데 이는 <야래자설화>의 이물교혼 부분과 연관된다는 점, ‘화롯불을 지키는 여사제가 수목신과 신성혼을 거쳐 영웅을 낳았다.’는 내용의 <로물루스> 탄생담처럼 <불씨와 동삼>도 ‘수목신과 여성의 성적인 결합’의 내용을 가질 수 있으며 이러한 구조적 친연성으로 인하여 <야래자설화>의 영향을 쉽게 받을 수 있다는 점 등을 들었다.
끝으로, 이 설화의 구조와 의미가 변모하는 과정으로 세 단계를 설정하였다. 곧 원래 ‘불씨의 보존과 간수’를 중시하는 민간신앙과 의식을 바탕으로 이야기가 생겨난 첫째 단계, ‘묵은 불을 새로운 불로 바꾸는 불 의식’이 반영되는 둘째 단계, <야래자설화>가 결합되면서 이야기의 구조, 줄거리, 의미 및 성격 등이 변하는 셋째 단계 등이 그것이다.

영어초록

In this study, I investigated the actual tradition process of <Bulssi and Dongsam> which is based on the faith in fire and showed that this process was affected by <the tale of Yaraeja>. This intellectual endeavor was also the efforts of attempting to disclose the underlying meaning of <Bulssi and Dongsam>. To this end, I looked at the folk belief dimension and the thinking of fire that are held by Korean and the neighboring peoples.
First, each version of <Bulssi and Dongsam> is classified into four types according to its core elements, and the common story structure that exists in different versions is extracted. This exhibits a few key meanings of the story. 1) the story reflects our traditional folk belief and custom that keeping the fire in a house alive is the duty of women and they must not fail in any difficulty, 2) this story shows the belief that the whole family will be blessed when the fire is kept wholeheartedly, 3) this folklore can be seen as the initiation story of a daughter-in-law, and 4) the fire in this story symbolizes 'the succession of family' and 'the blessing of the family.' This last element appears to emerge due to the fire being combined with the belief on Jowang(竈王).
Next, I noted that nowhere in the story are shown the women's efforts to restore a extinguished fire while their efforts to keep fire are omnipresent. I attempted to show that the efforts of restoring fire had originally been included in the story. For this, I examined the folklore and the belief of fire of Korea and its neighboring peoples. Based on the findings, I concluded that the missing part must have been existent in the story.
Finally, this paper investigates how <the tale of Yaraeja> has changed the meaning and the structure of the story. It is pointed out that both of the stories have elements that are reflective of sexual relationships. This illustrates that the story has gone through a few stages of transformation. The first stage is that the story began to emerge based on folk belief and thinking of maintaining and cherishing fire, which can be easily found in the story. It is the second stage that the thinking of changing a old fire to a new one became embedded into the story line. This stage is the one that is easily expected due to the belief that an extinguished fire must be restored. Third, the story transformed its structure, its story line, its meanings and characteristics as it got blended with <the tale of Yaraeja>. I claim that upon the influence of <the tale of Yaraeja>, 'extinguishing a old fire' transformed to 'searching for the reason why the fire died' to 'tracing the thread' and to 'identifying the person who extinguished the fire.' Accordingly, 'obtaining a new fire' has also changed to 'getting Dongsam,' and as a result the story has come to emphasize the meaning of becoming rich. Therefore, becoming rich with gold and silver in each of the story versions is claimed to be due to the blending of the two stories.
