성리학의 심적 도덕 체계에 대한 두뇌 신경 과학적 접근 -『북계자의(北溪字義)』와 다마지오(Damasio)의 이론을 중심으로- (Neuroscience Approach to the Mental Moral System of Neo-Confucianism -Focusing on the Beixi ziyi and the theory of Damasio -)

초록

이 글은 추상적 사고에 기초한 성리학의 심적 도덕 체계를 경험 과학을 통해 재해석해 보려는 하나의 시도이다. 이러한 시도가 필요한 이유는 과거 성리학을 비롯한 유가 철학의 연구가 지나치게 형이상학적 논의에 치우침으로써 초래한 현실과의 괴리감에서 벗어날 수 있게 하는 하나의 대안을 제시할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 성리학 연구의 새로운 지평을 열어줌으로써 성리학 연구의 저변 확대를 기대할 수 있기 때문이다.
이 글은 이러한 목적을 실행하기 위해 먼저 성리학의 주요 개념인 ‘성(性)’, ‘정(情)’, ‘심(心)’ 등을 두뇌 신경과학이 밝힌 심적 개념들과 연관 지어 재해석한 후, 성리학의 심적 도덕 체계를 두뇌 신경과학에서 말하고 있는 심적 절차로 재구성해 보려하였다. 다만 지면의 한계 상 그 연구 범위를 『북계자의』와 현대 뇌 과학의 선도적 역할을 하고 있는 안토니오 다마지오(Antonio Damasio)의 연구 성과를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 필자는 다음과 같은 결과를 도출할 수 있었다.
첫째, 성리학에서 말하는 ‘성’은 다마지오가 말하는 ‘정서(Emotion)’와 대응시킬 수 있다. 그 이유는 양자는 모두 ‘선천성’, ‘도덕성의 담지처’, ‘도덕감의 토대’라는 측면에서 같은 특성을 지니고 있기 때문이다.
둘째, 성리학에서 말하는 ‘정’은 다마지오가 말하는 ‘느낌(Feeling)’과 대응시킬 수 있다. 그 이유는 양자는 모두 ‘도덕성의 현실태’, ‘불선의 담지처’, ‘도덕성과 도덕적 행위의 연결고리’라는 측면에서 같은 특성을 지니고 있기 때문이다.
셋째, 성리학에서 말하는 ‘심’은 다마지오가 말하는 ‘두뇌 신경회로가 만든 심적 표상’과 대응시킬 수 있다. 그 이유는 양자는 모두 ‘몸의 주관자이며 몸과 분리될 수 없는 존재’, ‘의식 활동의 담지처’, ‘도덕의 가능태와 현실태를 모두 소유’라는 측면에서 같은 특성을 지니고 있기 때문이다.
넷째, ‘천리’→‘성’→‘정’→‘심’으로 이어지는 성리학의 심적 도덕 체계는 ‘감응적 존재자의 생존과 번성을 위한 자동 반응’→‘정서’→‘느낌’→‘두뇌 신경회로의 심적 표상’으로 이어지는 두뇌 신경과학의 심적 절차와 대응할 수 있다.
성리학의 형이상학적 개념들을 경험 과학적 사실로 재해석하려는 시도는, 그 자체로 그 둘 사이의 의미 충돌을 피할 수 없는 위험성을 안고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이와 같은 시도는 추상적 사고에서 구상적 사고로 전환하고 있는 현대 철학의 흐름 속에서 성리학이 지향해야할 바를 제시하고 있다는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This essay is an attempt to reinterpret the mental moral system of Neo-Confucianism based on abstract thought through experiential science. The reason for such an attempt is that it presents an alternative to avoiding the divergence from the reality brought about by metaphysical discussion of past studies of Confucian philosophy including the Neo-Confucianism. In addition, by opening a new horizon for the study of Neo-Confucianism, we can expect to expand the base of research on Neo-Confucianism.
To accomplish this purpose, this article first reinterprets the main concepts of nNeo-Confucianism such as 'Xing(性)', 'Qing(情)' and 'Xin(心)' in relation to the psychological concept revealed by brain neuroscience. After that, I tried to reconstruct the mental moral system of Neo-Confucianism with the mental process which is mentioned in the brain neuroscience.
But with a limited amount of papers, I focused on the content of Beixi ziyi and the work of Antonio Damasio, who plays a leading role in current brain science. Through this, I was able to derive the following results.
First, 'Xing(性)' in the Neo-Confucianism can be matched with 'emotion' in Damasio's study. The reason is that both have the same characteristics in terms of 'innateness', 'the place containing morality', and 'the foundation of moral sense'.
Second, 'Qing(情)' in the Neo-Confucianism can be matched with 'Feeling' in Damasio's study. The reason for this is that both have the same characteristics in terms of 'the revealed state of morality', 'the place containing bad(wrong),' and 'the link between morality and moral behavior'.
Third, 'Xin(心)' in the Neo-Confucianism can be matched with 'Mental Representation of the Brain Neural Circuit' in Damasio's study. The reason for this is that both have the same characteristics in terms of 'the controller of the body and being unable to be separated from the body', 'the place containing consciousness activities', and 'having both the potential state and revealed state of morality'.
Fourth, the mental moral system of Neo-Confucianism that leads from 'Tianli(天理)' to 'Xing(性)' to 'Qing(情)' to 'Xin(心)' can be matched with the mental process of neuroscience that leads from 'automatic response for survival and prosperity' to 'emotion' to 'feeling' to 'mental representation of the brain neural circuit'.
The attempt to interpret the metaphysical concepts of Neo-Confucianism as experiential scientific facts poses a risk of inevitable semantic conflict between the two. Nonetheless, such an attempt would be of great significance in that it presents one direction of the Neo-Confucianism in the flow of contemporary philosophy that is shifting from abstract thinking to conceptual thinking.
