소설의 화법과 한국전쟁(6·25)의 소설적 해석 - 홍성원의 『남과 북』 - (The art of narration and the novelistic interpretation of the korean war(6⋅25) -『The north and south』 by Hong Seong-won-)

초록

이 글은 소설의 화법 문제를 통해 홍성원의 대하소설 『남과 북』에 나타난 한국전쟁의 역사적 성격과 소설사적 의미를 분석한 논문이다.
『남과 북』은 ≪세대≫지 70년 9월호부터 75년 10월호까지 5년여에 걸쳐 ‘육이오’라는 이름으로 발표된 9천7백 매 분량의 대하소설로서 15,000매 분량으로 완간된 조정래의 『태백산맥』이 나오기 전까지 한국전쟁(1950.6.25.-1953.7.27.)을 소재로 한 가장 방대한 분량의 한국 소설이었다. 이전의 소설들이 주로 인간성의 파탄이나 부조리, 이데올로기의 선택을 둘러싼 갈등과 모순을 부분적으로 다루고 있었던 것에 비해 홍성원의 『남과 북』은 한국전쟁을 둘러싼 정치․경제․사회․역사적인 문제를 수십 명의 등장인물들과 다양한 사건들을 통해서 총체적으로 다루고 있다. 이 소설에 이르러 비로소 한국 소설은 한국전쟁에 관한 거대 서사를 형상화하기에 이른다.
홍성원은 국내외 기자 및 미군 정보 장교의 대화를 통해 대리전으로서의 한국 전쟁의 성격을 역설하기도 하며, 북쪽의 정치보위부 장교들의 행동과 언설을 통해 전쟁에 대한 북쪽 사람들의 생각을 전달하기도 한다. 주로 말하기 화법으로 부각되고 있는 전쟁의 정치적 성격을 통해 작가는 한국전쟁의 역사적 의미를 소설 속에서 집요하게 추적하고 있다.
또한 작가는 한국 전쟁이 경제적 측면에서 인적․물적 손실이 극심했던 전쟁이란 사실을 주인공들 대부분이 전사나 사망하는 과정을 통해 보여주기 화법으로 보여주고 있으며, 미국의 원조물자나 군수물자의 비정상적인 유통과정과 이에 기생한 인간들의 비리와 부의 축재 과정을 통해서는 전시 경제의 어려움과 처참한 현실을 보여주기도 한다. 뿐만 아니라 각종 반인륜적인 전쟁 범죄 행위에 대한 묘사와 서술을 통해 그 과정에서 파괴되어 가는 인간의 모습과 파탄된 윤리 의식을 보여주기도 한다.
한편 작가는 이 소설에서 인구의 지역적․계층적 이동의 문제를 통해 한국 전쟁으로 인한 전통적 신분 및 권위 의식의 소멸과 재구성 과정을 말하기 화법과 보여주기 화법을 적절히 결합하여 보여주고 있으며, 이를 통해서 한국 전쟁이 가지고 있는 사회적 측면의 성격과 그 의미를 부각시키고 있다.
아울러 작가는 말하기 화법을 통해 세계 전쟁사적인 측면에서 한국 전쟁이 세운 다양한 신기록들을 다시 한 번 부각시키고 있으며, 각종 전쟁 범죄와 비리 과정에서 희생당하는 군인과 민간인들의 모습을 통해 전쟁의 참상과 비리를 고발하고 있다. 나아가 전쟁 이후의 남과 북의 모습을 예측케 하며, 분단의 현재적 의미와 그 문제점들을 역사적 차원에서 사고하도록 유도하고 있다. 이 과정에서 소설적 형상화를 거치지 않고 무리하게 말하기 화법으로 전쟁의 성격을 기술하는 부분도 나타났다.
결론적으로 홍성원의 『남과 북』은 한국 전쟁의 성격과 그 의미를 삼십여 명의 중요 등장인물들의 개별적 삶의 모습과 죽음의 과정을 총체적으로 형상화해낸 한국 최초의 대하소설이자 반전소설로서 그 의의가 있는 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 분단의 현재적 의미와 그 문제점을 남과 북, 좌와 우, 국내외는 물론 상하의 계층적 시각에서 객관적으로 짚어볼 수 있도록 배려하고 있는 소설로서 문학사적 가치가 높은 소설이다. 하지만 말하기 화법을 통해 역사적 사실이 소설적 형상화를 거치지 않고 직접 제시되어 보여주기 화법을 통해 소설적 형상화에 성공하고 있는 다른 부분과 조화를 이루지 못한 부분도 있었다.

영어초록

This writing is a thesis analysing novelistic meanings of the saga, 『The north and south』 by Hong Seong-won in connection with the historical nature of the korean war.
『The north and south』 is a 9700 sheet saga published by the name of 'Yugio' over five years from september issue in 1970 to October issue in 1975 of the magazine,≪Generation≫,also the most massive korean novel with the material of the korean war(1950.6.25-1953.7.27) before the 『Taebaek Mountains』by Jo Jeong-lae with 15,000 sheets was made public. While the previous novels partly dealt with failure or irrationality of humanity, conflicts and contradictions over the choice of ideology, 『The north and south』 by Hong Seong-won generally covers the political, economical, social and historical problems regarding the korean war by showing dozens of characters and various events. Finally huge epic novel of korea about the war came to visualize.
Hong Seong-won emphasizes the nature of the korean war as a proxy war by means of reporters from the inside and outside of the country and the U.S intelligence officer, also delivers the opinions of the north people about the war through actions and speeches of the north political defence officers. The writer gave more weight to the north people than the original work through adaptation in an effort to maintain balance of sensitive historical issues between north and south korea. This also reflects the changed inter-korean relations since 1990's and comes from the writer's hope for the better and promising relationship of future.
The writer shows that the korean war caused huge losses of life and property in economic aspect through most of the main characters' death, and proves difficulties of wartime economy and disastrous life through abnormal distribution channel of aid goods and military supplies from America and humane corruption, accumulation of wealth by illicit means. Furthermore he demonstrates that war crimes against humanity led to destroying humanity and failed ethics.
Meanwhile the novel says that the regional․hierarchical movement of population in the korean war brought about the destruction and restructuring of traditional status and authority, highlighting the nature and the meaning of the korean war in social aspect.
The writer stresses the meaning of the korean war establishing various new world records, reporting the horrors and corruption of the war through soldiers and civilians making sacrifice. Furthermore the writer makes us predict the situations of the north and south after the war, and think of the current meaning and the problems of the division in historical aspect.
Thus, 『The north and south』 by Hong Seong-won has its significance as first saga of korea and antiwar novel in that it embodies the nature and the meaning of the korean war through over thirty main characters' individual life and death. Also it is of great value throughout the history of literature in that it allows us to see current meaning and problems of the division objectively from the perspective of the north and south, left and right, both high and low(the upper and lower classes), at home and abroad.
