발해의 서북쪽과 북쪽 경계에 대해 - 고고학자료를 중심으로 - (About the northwestern and northern borders of Balhae - according to archaeological materials -)

초록

문헌자료에 의하면 발해는 시기적인 차이는 있어도 말갈의 부족들을 모두 복속시켰다. 흑수말갈도 예외가아니었다. 흑수말갈은 때로는 발해에 독립적이기도 하였으나 꽤 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 발해에 복속되었던 것도사실이다. 이 사실은 고고학적으로도 확인된다. 흑수말갈이 남긴 것으로 알려져 있는 나이펠드-동인 문화 유적들이 8세기 이후 동아무르지역에서 급격하게 줄어들고 대신 소흥안령 서쪽의 서아무르지역에 출현하기 시작한다. 이 시기 동아무르지역에는 ‘발해 속말말갈’이 남긴 것으로 이해되는 10세기 초 이전의 뽀끄로브까 문화 유적들이 새로이 등장하며, 서아무르지역에는 나이펠드-동인 문화 유적들뿐만 아니라 역시 ‘발해 속말말갈’이 남긴 것으로 알려져 있는 뜨로이쯔꼬예 문화 유적들이 등장한다. 따라서 발해의 최대 강역을 이야기할때에는 흑수말갈의 영역도 마땅히 포함해야만 한다.
오늘날 러시아와 중국학계에서는 자신들이 설정한 발해의 경계 내에 있는 발해시기 유적들에 대해 고구려적 요소들이 보이는 유적들만을 발해유적으로 인정을 하고, 말갈적 요소들만 보이는 유적들은 발해유적이 아닌 말갈유적으로 간주한다. 발해의 건국 주체와 주요 구성원이 말갈이라고 주장하는 그들이기에 이는 참으로아이러니하다고 하겠다. 발해시기의 유적들은 고구려적 요소를 지니든 혹은 말갈적 요소만 가지든 모두 발해유적이 분명하다. 다만 이 둘을 구분할 필요가 있어 고구려적 요소를 지니는 유적들은 ‘본원적인’ 발해유적으로 부를 것을 제안한 바 있다.
사실 필자는 수년 전에 발해의 강역이 서북쪽으로 소흥안령을 경계로 하고, 북쪽으로는 아무르강을 넘어동북쪽으로 연해주 북쪽의 사마르가강 하구를 잇는 선까지일 것이라는 의견을 제시한 적이 있다. 그런데 그이후 기존에 생각하였던 본원적인 발해유적의 분포범위 보다 더 서쪽과 북쪽에서 새로운 발해유적들을 확인하게 되었고, 또한 소흥안령 서쪽의 서아무르지역에서도 고구려적 요소를 가진 발해시기 유적들을 다수 확인하였다. 따라서 ‘발해 속말말갈’이 이주하여 남긴 문화로 이해되고 있는 서아무르지역의 10세기 초 이전까지의 뜨로이쯔꼬예 문화 유적들도 발해의 강역에 포함하는 것이 마땅하다는 결론에 도달하게 되었다.
이 경우 본원적인 발해유적과 발해시기 말갈유적을 모두 포함하는 발해의 서북쪽 경계는 눈강과 제1송화강 합수지점 – 호란하 – 제야강 하류지역을 잇는 선으로, 북쪽 경계는 제야강 하류지역 – (아무르강 북쪽의) 꾸르강 중하류지역 – 아무르강 하상류지역 – (연해주 북동쪽의) 사마르가강을 잇는 선이 된다. 이 계선은 기존에 문헌자료를 통해 제시된 발해의 강역안보다 서북쪽과 북쪽으로 훨씬 더 크게 확장된 것이다. 이 경계는유적들의 분포지점을 선으로 연결한 것이기 때문에 실제의 발해강역은 더 넓었을 것이고, 또 아무르강 북쪽과동북쪽으로는 유적조사가 더 이루어진다면 발해의 강역이 더 확대될 수도 있을 것이다

영어초록

According to written sources, Balhae (Bohai) subjugated all Mohe tribes, including Heishui Mohe. For a while, the Heishui Mohe were independent of Balhae, but for a long time they were subordinate to it. That is confirmed by archaeological materials. Sites of the Nayfeld-Tongren culture left by Heishui Mohe after the 8th century cease in the Eastern Amur Region, but they appear in the Western Amur Region. But in the Eastern Amur region sites of the Pokrovka culture left by the “Balhae Shumomohe” before the beginning of the 10th century, in the Western Amur Region there are not only sites of Heishui Mohe, but also the sites of the Troitskoe Culture, also left by the “Balhae Shumomohe”. Therefore, when it comes to the ultimate territory of Balhae, it will be correct to include in it also the territory of distribution of Heishui Mohe.
At present, Chinese and Russian scientists recognize sites that have Kogurye elements as Balhae ones, but the sites that have only Mohe elements are considered as Mohe ones, although they date back to the Balhae time and are located inside the Balhae border, which the scientists themselves determined. It’s even ironic, as they always say that Balhae was founded by Mohe and the population of Balhae was mainly Mohe. These sites of the Balhae time are all Balhae sites, despite the fact that they have Koguryeo or Mohe traits. However, we have to distinguish them. In this regard, we proposed to use the name “proper” Balhae sites, which may mean Balhae sites with Koguryeo elements.
Some years ago, the author of this work supposed that the northwestern border of Balhae come to the Small Xingan Range, and the northern border crosses the Amur River and reaches the mouth of the Samarga River in Northeast Primorye on the northeast. But recently, we have found new Balhae sites to the west and to the north of the previously defined distribution of the proper Balhae sites. In addition, in the Western Amur Region to the west of the Small Xingan Range, several sites of the Balhae time with Koguryeo traits were found. In this regard, we came to the conclusion that the sites of the Troitskoe culture before the beginning of the 10th century in the Western Amur Region should be included in the territory of Balhae.
Therefore, the northwestern border of Balhae, including the proper Balhae and Mohe sites of the Balhae time, is determined by the line: the confluence of the Nen river and the first Songhua rivers → the Hulan River → the lower reaches of the Zeya River. And the northern border goes from the lower reaches of the Zeya River → the middle-lower reaches of the Kur River (in the north of the Amur River) → the lower upper reaches of the Amur River → the mouth of the Samarga River (in the north-east of Primorye). This boundary line is much wider than the line proposed earlier based on the study of written sources. These lines are determined by the junction of the sites, so the real border of Balhae most likely was even wider than it. In addition, when the sites in the northern and north-eastern parts of the Amur River will be studied, the Balhae border may even be distended.
