초록

북마리아나 지역은 1914년 제1차 세계대전 당시 일본해군에 점령된 후 일본의 통치를 받았다. 1917년 설립된 서촌척식주식회사는 북마리아나 사이판에 제당소를 건설하고 농장을 개척하기 시작하였다. 서촌척식이 1917년 말 전라남도 광주에서 노동자를 모집하고 이들을 1918년 1월 사이판으로 데려감으로써 조선인의 북마리아나 지역 이주가 시작되었다.
1918년 이주 조선인들은 열악한 노동 및 생활환경에 불만을 품고 파업을 일으킨 끝에 대부분 본국으로 송환되었다. 이 경험으로 일본정부와 회사는 조선인들이 노동자로서 부적합하다는 인식을 갖게 되었다. 그 결과 1920년대 내내 조선인의 북마리아나 지역 이주는 부진하였다.
1930년대 들어서 남양무역주식회사 취업이나 이민이 늘어나며 조선인 거주자가 증가하기 시작하였다. 이 시기 조선인의 증가에는 조선인친목회도 영향을 미쳤다. 조선인친목회는 조선인의 남양군도 이주를 위해 선전단을 파견하는 한편 직접 노동자 모집 알선에 나서기도 하였다. 그러나 이 단체는 궁극적으로 조선인의 이익보다는 통제에 힘썼다. 더욱이 이 단체가 일본인 기부금으로 운영된 점, 일본회사의 조선인 모집책으로 기능한 점, 빈곤에 허덕이는 이민자를 양성한 점 등으로 인하여 부정적인 평가를 받았다.
1939년 들어 조선인의 북마리아나 지역 이주는 큰 폭으로 증가하기 시작하였다. 이것은 남양흥발주식회사의 조선인 노동자 모집이 적극 추진되며 나타난 결과였다. 조선인의 증가는 거주지 분포의 변화도 수반하였다. 1920∼1930년대 북마리아나의 조선인들은 주로 시가지 지역에 거주하며 서비스업 및 운송업무에 종사한 것으로 파악된다. 그런데 1939년 남양흥발의 조선인 동원 이후 농장노동자의 비중이 압도적으로 증가하게 되었다. 조선 내 출신지역도 남양흥발이 주로 호남지역에서 노동자를 수급하였기 때문에 호남출신자가 압도적으로 많았다.

In 1914, during World War I, Japan occupied the Northern Mariana Islands and later ruled the region. Founded in 1917, Nishimura Development Company began to construct a sugar-manufactory in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, and pioneer a farm. At the end of 1917, Nishimura Development recruited workers from Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, and took them to Saipan in January 1918, and Koreans began to move to the Northern Mariana Islands for the first time.
Koreans who emigrated in 1918 were dissatisfied with the poor working and living conditions, and most of them were repatriated to their home countries after launching strikes. The Japanese government and the company have come to recognize that Koreans are unfit as laborers through these experiences. As a result, Koreans' migration to Northern Mariana Islands was sluggish throughout the 1920s.
In the 1930s, the number of Korean residents began to increase due to the increase in employment and immigration to the South Seas Trading Company. The increase in the number of Koreans during this period was also influenced by Korean social gatherings. In order to help Koreans move to the South Sea Islands, the Korean Association sent propaganda groups to recruit workers. Ultimately, however, the group worked on control rather than seeking the interests of Koreans. Moreover, the group received negative reviews for its operation with donations from Japanese citizens, its proxy for recruiting Koreans from Japanese companies, and its training of poverty-stricken immigrants.
From 1939, Korean migration to the Northern Mariana Islands began to increase significantly. This was the result of the active recruitment of Korean workers by the South Seas Development Company. The increase in Koreans also involved changes in the distribution of residences. In the 1920s and 1930s, Koreans in the Northern Mariana Islands were mainly found to have lived in urban areas and engaged in service and transportation. However, the proportion of farm workers increased overwhelmingly after the mobilization of Koreans from South Seas Development Company began in 1939. In Korea, thr South Seas Development Company mainly supplied workers in Jeolla-do, so the number of people from Jeolla-do was overwhelming.
