北鮮의 기억― 식민에서 분단까지, 공간감각의 표상들 (The Memory of North Korea)

초록

삼팔선 분단으로 북한은 텅 빈 공간, 아토피아가 되었다. 남쪽의 대한민국 국민에게 북한은 감각할 수도 인식할 수도 실천할 수도 없는 공간 아닌 공간이다. 빈 공간은 이데올로기가 채웠다. 그러므로 아토피아가 된 북한을 재공간화할 수 있는 실마리는 근대 이후, 분단 이전의 ‘북선’에 있다.
식민지시대에 처음 등장한 북선의 공간감각은 개척과 식민의 공간, 조선인의 근원적 정체성의 공간으로 나뉘어 있었다. 식민권력은 북선을 시찰하고 조사했다. 제국적 규모의 조사사업으로 식민지조선에서 동원할 수 있는 인적, 물적 자원을 기준으로 지역을 나누고 순위를 산정했다. 그래서 북선은 적은 인구에 군사적 긴장이 상존하는, 그리고 광업, 산림업, 수산업 등이 유망한 낙후지역으로 표상되었다. 식민과 개척, 제국 통치자의 북선에 대한 공간감각인 것이다. 이에 비해 조선인들의 북선은 근원적 정체성의 공간으로 표상되었다. 북선은 풍성한 문화, 수려한 산천과 동의어였고, 인정과 풍속, 역사와 여론이 있는 다시 말해 ‘사람이 살고 있는’ 근원적 정체성의 공간이었다. 식민지 조선인에게 북선은 특유의 의미와 가치를 품은 자부심과 긍지의 공간으로 표상되었다.
하지만 종전과 해방으로 식민지 근대를 양분하던 북선의 공간감각은 붕괴되기 시작했다. 아토피아화의 기원에는 식민 공간에서 생성된 불안과 공포가 있었다. 일본인은 물론 고향을 떠나 이주한 조선인에게도 북선은 불안과 공포였고, 안전과 생활을 보장할 수 있는 공간으로의 회귀를 촉발했다. 그들에게 삼팔선 분단 소식은 공포 부재의 공간, 안전과 생활이 보장된 공간, 정체성의 근원적 공간 즉 고향으로의 회귀 불가능의 감각을 자극했다. 해방기 북선을 가로지르는 월경 서사가 펼쳐진 환경이다. 그러나 고향을 향한 고난의 여정 속에서 오히려 불안과 공포는 소멸의 과정을 거친다. 불안과 공포를 동반하는 이동은 공간감각을 최소한의 생존감각으로 축소시켰고 이 때문에 북선의 공간감각은 북선의 사람들에 집중되었다. 북선을 종단하는 동안 만났던 조선인은 동정적이고 호의적이었다. 북선은 곧 북선에 살고 있는 조선인들이었고 월경자들이 경험한 동정과 호의가 탈북선을 자극한 불안과 공포를 소멸시켰다. 조선의 공간적 총체성이 붕괴되는 순간, 또 감각할 수 있고 인식할 수 있으며 실천할 수 있는 ‘북선’이 아토피아로 전환되는 분기의 순간, 남선을 선택한 이들에게 북선의 마지막 기억은 조선인으로서의 ‘북선’, 사람으로서의 ‘북선’으로 남았다. 북선의 사람들, 여기가 ‘북선’ 토피아의 종착지이자, ‘북한’ 토피아의 출발점이다.

영어초록

Because of the 38th parallel, North Korea has became empty place, atopia. North Korea is the place but it isn't the place which South korean can't perceive or experience. The empty place is filled with ideology. There is a clue we can re-place the North Korea(北鮮). During the colonial modern period, it had become atopia. Emerged in the colonial period, place sense of North Korea was divided into two meanings: one was developing and colonial space, the other was place of recognizing Korea people's identity. Colonial power investigated and inspected North Korea. After investigating it in a imperial scale, colonial power divided and ranked regions depending on material resources. So North Korea which had small population but military tension represented a backward reign of the country but it also had the great possibility in mining industry, the forestry industry, fishing industry. The ruler of the empire recognized it as developing and colonization. The recognition was the space sense of North Korea.
By comparing this recognition, Korean cognized it as the symbol of place where they could realize their identities. North Korea had the same meaning of good culture, beautiful mountains and streams. Also it had histories and public opinions that is to say, it was the place where they could recognize their identities. To Korean in the colonial period, North Korea was the symbol of having unique value and meaning. So it became the place of pride and self-esteem.
But after ending the war and liberation, the two recognition of North Korea started to collapse. There was horror and anxiety that came from not-space, atopia. North Korea had the same meaning to not only Japanese also Korean who left their homes. So that feeling caused them to go to place giving them security and guarantee of living. But the news of division of 38th parallel made them feel that they couldn't go to place which they wanted to live in. That is to say, it meant the impossibility of going back home where they could recognize their identities. Crossing the border in the liberation period happened in this situation. But the feeling of horror and anxiety went through the process of fading away in the hard journey to hometown. Korean they met in crossing North Korea were very friendly and kind. North Korea was just north Korean. The kindness and friendliness they experienced could help fade away the feeling of horror and anxiety of the border crossers which made them decide to escape North Korea. It was the time when the spatial totality of Korea collapsed, North Korea which had been perceptible, sensible, workable changed into atopia. Also to people who choose to stay South Korea(南鮮), the last memory of North Korea was just Korean.
