탈북여성과 공감/혐오의 문화정치학 (The North Korean Female Refugees and Cultural Politics of Sympathy/Hatred)

초록

탈북여성은 초국적 자본의 이동과 노동시장의 재편성 속에서 국민국가가 이주와 정주의 장으로 변화함에 따라 이주자, 외국인 노동자 등과 함께 한국문학이 새롭게 주목한 주인공이다. 북한 여성들의 월경은 북한 체제의 가부장적 권위가 무너지는 한편으로 세계체제의 주변부 지역들이 강대국과 거대자본에 의해 서발턴화되고 있음을 증언한다. 탈북여성들의 이야기는 환대는 낯선 땅에 도착했을 때 적대적으로 대접받지 않을 이방인의 권리임에도 불구하고 무국적자나 난민은 국가, 국민, 영토라는 삼위일체에서 추방당한 사람들로 거주할 장소를 가지지 못하기에 ‘사람’이 될 수 없음을 암시한다. 이들은 사회가 그 지위를 인정해주지 않는 한 최소한의 법의 보호도 받을 수 없는 ‘비인간’, 소위 ‘절대적 타자’라는 말로밖에는 부를 수 없는 존재이다.
한국문학은 이렇듯 비인간으로서 탈북여성이 겪는 고통을 시민의 양심을 일깨워 줄 공감 윤리의 자원으로 재발견한다. 그녀들이 이동의 과정에서 겪는 비참과 모멸적 사건들은 슬픔, 분노, 경악 같은 감정들을 요동치게 한다. 이는 피해자가 겪은 고통이 전달되어 제 삼자인 관망자도 당사자가 느끼는 것과 유사한 감정을 얻음으로써 ‘동류의식’이 형성될 수 있음을 암시한다. 그러나 탈북여성을 공감의 대상으로 만드는 과정에서 북한과 중국의 국경지대는 문명의 도덕 질서에서 벗어난 야만성으로 은유된다. 소설 속 아시아는 황량한 자연만큼이나 이익을 위해서라면 강간이나 살인마저 불사하는 이리떼의 땅, 즉 만인이 만인에게 늑대가 되는 자연상태를 연상시킨다. 이러한 재현은 세계체제의 하위제국으로 부상 중인 한국이 북한과 중국이라는 로컬을 스스로와 구별지음으로써 탈(脫)아시아하려는 욕망을 암시한다. 혐오는 경계의식과 서열의식을 내포하는 동시에 자신과의 근접성과 동질성에 대한 인식을 담고 있기 때문이다. 탈북여성에 대한 재현 역시 혐오 경제를 벗어났다고 보기 어렵다. 그녀들은 아시아라는 그로테스크한 공간에서 짓밟히고 착취당해 비인간으로 전락함으로써 동정의 대상이 되기 때문이다.

영어초록

The North Korean female refugees are a main character which the Korean literature takes notes newly with immigrant and foreign worker, as a nation-state changes to a place for migration and settlement in supranational movement of capital and reforming of the labor market. Crossing of the North Korean female refugees are giving evidence that while paternalistic authority of North Korea system is falling apart, the fringes of the world system is becoming a position of subaltern by powerful nation and huge capital. The story of the North Korea female refugees implies that even if they have a right of a stranger who is not treated unfairly when arriving at a strange land, a stateless person or a refugee couldn’t have shelter because they are exiled from the trinity ; nation, people and territory. Unless the society can’t admit their status, they could be called as ‘absolute stranger’, like an inhuman person that can’t be protected under the minimum law.
The Korean literature rediscovers suffering of the North Korea female refugees as a resource of empathic morality that could awaken civic conscience. The tragic and degrading events during their movement thresh feelings such as sorrow, rage and shock. This implies that as the suffering of a victim has been transferred to an observer, and then the observer could feel the similar emotion as the victim, ‘consciousness of kind’ may be formed. In the process of making the North Korea female refugee an object of sympathy, however, the border area between North Korea and China becomes a metaphor of the savagery out of morality and order of civilization. In the nonfiction, Asia reminds us of natural state in which is a land for a pack of wolves that are ready to rape and to kill for a profit, like a vast wilderness, namely, all people become wolves. Such reappearance implies that as Korea, which is emerging as a subaltern in the world system, distinguishes itself from North Korea and China, Korea would like to try to escape from Asia. Hatred involves guard consciousness and rank consciousness, at the same moment it contains conception of proximity and homogeneity with oneself. It is difficult to think that reappearance for the North Korea female refugees also has got out of economy of disgust. The reason why is that as they fall into an in human person, being destroyed and being squeezed under grotesquerie space, Asia, they could be an object pity.
