<부산행> 시리즈를 통해 본 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 산업적 특성 (The Industrial Characteristics of Korean Trans-Media Storytelling Through the Train to Busan Series)

초록

통상적으로 문화콘텐츠에서 ‘한국형’이란 용어는 한국이라는 지역적⋅문화적 특성으로부터 비롯되는 한국적 특수성을 지닌 콘텐츠의 변별성을 의미한다. 하지만 산업적 요인 또한 미디어콘텐츠의 ‘한국형’ 모델의 정체성을 만드는데 핵심이 된다. 다수의 미디어가 산업적으로 결합하는 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 특성상 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 변별성을 파악하기 위해서는 산업과 관련된 요소가 필수적으로 고려돼야 한다. 문화적 특성으로부터 비롯되는 스토리 내재적 요소와 산업적 제한 요소로부터 비롯되는 제작의 문제, 그리고 ‘지역’으로서의 한국 콘텐츠의 정체성은 향유 문화와 긴밀하게 연계돼 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 세계관을 확립하게끔 한다. <부산행>, <서울역>은 후속작 영화 <반도>와 웹툰 <반도 프리퀄 631>을 통해 완성된 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링으로서의 형태를 갖춘다. 영화, 애니메이션에 웹툰을 더해 미디어를 확장했고, <부산행>과 세계관은 공유하지만 새로운 스토리를 담은 <반도> 시리즈를 통해 전체 서사체의 규모를 키움으로써 프랜차이즈 스토리의 면모를 갖춘다. 동시에 <반도> 시리즈의 확장을 통해 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 특이성이 발견된다. 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 주요 장르인 웹툰이 활용되는 점을 비롯해, <부산행>부터 이어지는 좀비 장르의 외피와 상반되는 가족애 중심의 서사와 주제 의식 등 한국형 블록버스터 영화 특성이 드러나는 것이다. 무엇보다 <부산행> 시리즈에서는 산업적 한계요소가 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링에 미치는 영향성을 살펴볼 수 있다. 거대 엔터테인먼트 기업이 총괄하는 형태가 아닌 미디어별로 협업하는 형태로 이뤄지는 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링의 산업 구조를 취하고 있고, 그에 따라 발생하는 IP 문제, 스토리 및 미디어 확장 제한성 등이 발견된다. 한국이라는 ‘지역’ 정체성과 향유문화가 만나 한국형 콘텐츠를 규정짓는 현상에서 K-좀비와 <부산행> 시리즈의 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링을 연계해 살펴볼 수도 있다. 이처럼 한국 트랜스미디어 스토리텔링은 산업적 한계가 콘텐츠의 내재적 요소를 강화하는 양상을 보이며, 산업과 제작의 지역성이 콘텐츠에 영향을 미치는 특징이 발견된다.

영어초록

In culture contents, the term ‘Korean style or type’ refers to the features of content with Korean specificity arising from the regional and cultural characteristics of Korea. Industrial factors are also important in creating the identity of the ‘Korean’ model of media contents. Due to the nature of trans-media storytelling in which several media are combined, factors related to the industry must be considered in order to conceptualize Korean trans-media storytelling. The story with cultural characteristics, the production issues from the industry, and the identity of Korean culture contents as a “region” are linked to the enjoyment culture to establish an universe of Korean trans-media storytelling. Train to Busan and Seoul Station are in the form of trans-media storytelling completed through the follow-up film Peninsula and the webtoon Peninsula Prequel 631. Through the Peninsula series, the media is expanded by adding webtoons to movies and animations, and the universe is shared with Train to Busan, but a new story is provided. As a result, the series has the aspect of a franchise story by increasing the size of the entire narrative. At the same time, the characteristics of Korean trans-media storytelling are found in the Train to Busan series. It is the use of webtoons, the important genre of Korean trans-media storytelling. And family-melodrama narratives that contradict the zombie genre are used. In the Train to Busan series, you can find the effect of industrial limitations on Korean trans-media storytelling. The industrial structure of Korean trans-media storytelling is not dominated by large entertainment companies like the U.S., but rather by collaborating with media. As a result, IP problems, story and media expansion limitations occur. In the phenomenon that Korea’s “regional” identity and enjoyment culture meet to define Korean culture contents, it can be analyzed by linking K-zombies and the trans-media storytelling of the Train to Busan series. As such, Korean trans-media storytelling shows features in which industrial limitations strengthen the intrinsic elements of content, and the locality of industry and production also affects content.
