해방공간기 구왕궁아악부의 활동 고찰 (Examining the Activities of the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household during the Post-Liberation Era)

초록

해방직후 음악계에서는 국가재건에 동참하고자 단체를 결성하였으며 민족음악의 수립을 음악적 지향점으로 삼고, 일본 제국주의 잔재 음악 소탕과 봉건적 문화요소와 잔재, 특권계급 문화 청산 등을 선결 과제로 삼았다. 해방공간기 치열했던 민족음악 논의 중 구왕궁아악부 관련 자료와 담론을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 당시 구왕궁아악부는 해방공간 민족음악론의 방향성과 대척점에 서 있었다. 아악부의 음악적 기반인 궁중음악은 봉건주의 특권계급의 음악며, 일제강점기 조선총독부와 일본 궁내성에 복무하는 음악활동을 해왔기 때문에 일제 잔재라는 문제에서도 자유롭지 않았다. 구왕궁아악부는 해방공간 3년의 짧은 기간 동안 생존을 위해 상당히 치열한 활동을 전개하였다. 시조강습, 관변음악 연주, 행사연주, 연구회 조직 및 국영안 통과 등 전방위적으로 활약하였다. 이러한 활동으로 ’일제강점기 이왕직아악부-해방공간기 구왕궁아악부-대한민국 국립국악원‘으로 이어졌고, 일제강점기와 대한민국을 이어주는 가교역할을 하였다.
결국 구왕궁아악부는 일제강점기에 해왔던 관행 그대로 음악을 유지하여, 음악구성, 무대구성, 악기배치 등을 현대국악계에 전통이라는 이름으로 전승되었다. 구왕궁아악부가 국립국악원으로 안착하여 주류음악의 중심이 됨으로써, 이왕직아악부 전승음악에 대해 한번도 비판이나 점검하지 못한 채 현대국악계에서 사용되고 있다. 이왕직아악부가 일제강점기 폭행의 시대를 견디고 전통음악을 지켜온 공로가 있음은 인정하는 바이지만, 음악적인 측면에서 비판과 검토의 작업이 반드시 필요하다고 여겨진다.

영어초록

Following the liberation, the country’s music community formed its organization to join the nation rebuilding. With the aim of establishing the national music called minjok ŭmak 民族音楽, they chose as their prerequisites the elimination of all remnants of the Japanese imperialism, the clearing of feudalistic elements of the culture, and the liquidation of the culture of the privileged class.
This paper focuses its study on the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household known as Kuwanggung aakpu 旧王宮雅楽部, of all the intense national music debates during the post-liberation era. The Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household stands opposite to the directionality of the national music theory. The court music of the Royal Music Institute is the music for the feudalistic privileged class. Also, the Royal Music Institute is not free from the charge that it belonged to remnants of the Japanese imperialism, as it engaged in musical activities while serving the Japanese General Government 朝鮮総督府 in Korea and the Imperial Household Office 宮内省 in Japan during the period of Japanese occupation.
The Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household engaged in intensive activities for its survival for the short 3 post-liberation years. It engaged in various operations including the sijo 時調 lessons, the court music performance, organization of the research society, and the passing of the bill for the state running of the organization. the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household incessantly urged the nation to acknowledge its credit for keeping the ancient tradition by relying on the historical legacy, in its effort to cope with the move to purge feudalism and the remnants of the Japanese imperialism. Owing to such activities, the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household transitioned to the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household during the post-liberation era and then to the National Gugak Center, thus successfully serving as the bridge that connected the period of Japanese occupation and the Republic of Korea.
After all, the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household stuck to the music that it practiced during the period of Japanese occupation, thus carrying the format of its music, stage plan, and the arrangement of musical instruments etc. to the modern-day kugak community in the name of tradition. As the Royal Conservatory of the Yi Household called 李王職雅楽部 as the National Gugak [Kugak] Center called Kungnip Kugwŏn 国立国楽院 and thereby took the Center of the mainstream music, the music carried over from the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household (旧王宮雅楽部) is used in the modern-day kugak community with neither criticism nor inspection performed on it. While due credit should be acknowledged for the role that the Royal Music Institute of the Yi Household kept the traditional music while brooking the violence during the period of Japanese occupation, it seems necessary to get its music itself to undergo a critical review.
