주변부 모더니즘과 분열적 위치의 기억 (Modernism on the Periphery and the Memory of the Dislocated Site)

초록

이 글의 목적은 주변부가 분열의 장소임을 밝히고 주변부 모더니즘 소설 텍스트를 통해 분열적 위치의 기억을 읽으려는 것이다. 주변부 모더니즘은 지구적 당대성을 호흡하려 했다. 모든 것을 바꾸어 가는 모더니티의 시간은 그것의 주제였다. 그러나 주변부에서 당대성은 역설적이게도 잔존하는 과거를 의식하지 않을 수 없게 하는것이었다. 모더니티의 시간이 지역적 과거와 불균등하게 공존하고 있었기 때문이다.
모더니티를 주목한 주변부 모더니즘은 당대성과 파열된 과거의 불균등한 공존이 일으키는 소란을 또한 기록하지 않을 수 없었다.
이 글에서는 모더니즘 문학의 위상을 민족주의 문학이나 프롤레타리아 문학과의비교를 통해 드러내려 했다. 주변부에서 주권을 획득하려는 기도가 ‘향수’의 메커니즘에 빠지고 만 경우들을 설명함으로써, 식민지 시대의 민족주의 문학이나 프롤레타리아 문학으로부터 주변부 모더니즘 문학을 차별화했다. 모더니즘 문학의 의미는 모더니티와의 관련을 통해 논의되어야 할 것이었다. 그렇기 때문에 주변부라는 분열적인 위치에서 포착되고 이해된 모더니티의 모습에 대해서도 간략히 언급했다. 나아가이 글에서는 모더니즘 소설텍스트들이 그려낸 불균등성의 소란들, 특히 모더니티－지구적 당대성이 폭력적으로 관철되는 과정에서 초래되었던 ‘비극’들을 읽는 독법을 문제시했다. 과연 이 비극들이 주변부의 원한을 상기시키는 것이었던가 하는 물음이었다. 그리고 마지막으로는 모더니티의 관철에 따른 혼종화의 의미와 가능성을고찰했다.

영어초록

The aim of this study is to make clear that the periphery was a dislocated placeand to read the memory of dislocated place through the texts of modernism novelson the periphery. modernism on the periphery attempted to absorb globalcontemporaneity. This was the task of the temporality of modernity which changedeverything in its path. However, paradoxically, contemporaneity could not avoidbringing with it an apprehension of that past in the periphery that still remained.
This is because the temporality of modernity co-existed unequally with the localpast. Further, modernism on the periphery, which was cognizant of modernity, couldnot help but record the disturbance brought about by the unequal co-existence ofcontemporaneity and the fractured past.
In this study, I tried to explain the status of modernism literature through acomparison of nationalist or proletarian literature. And I tried to differentiatemodernism from nationalist or proletarian literature by showing that the attempt toappropriate sovereignty in the periphery run into the mechanism of "nostalgia".
I think the significance of modernism literature must be discussed in the contextof modernity. It is for that reason that I feel that some mention must be made ofmodernity as it is apprehended in the dislocated site of the periphery. Another thingI wish to discuss in this paper is the practice of reading as "tragic" the trouble causedby uneveness as described in modernism texts, especially the violent process ofarriving at modernity and global contemporaneity. Such tragedies generally consistof readings which draw attention to the enmity carried by those on the periphery.
There is a need to examine whether such readings are appropriate. This will befollowed by a discussion of the significance of the hybridity brought about by theadvent of modernity and the possibilities it created.
