초록

발해의 멸망은 그간 대부분 단순히 內紛으로 보아왔지만, 이것은 내분이 아닌 10세기 발해와 거란의 “20년이 넘는 전쟁”으로 인해 나타난 결과였다. 따라서 본고에서는 兩國의 전쟁을 거란 太祖 耶律阿保機의 등장에서부터 추적하여 발해의 멸망 원인을 새롭게 검토해보았다.
거란이 “20년이 넘는 전쟁”에서 발해를 평정할 수 있던 것은 태조 야율아보기가 발해의 군사를 분산시키는 새로운 군사전략을 세웠기 때문이었다. 태조는 먼저 王都 上京와 扶餘故地의 鄚頡府를 압박할 수 있는 鐵利府와 東平府를 공격해 점령했고, 그런 다음 遼陽을 점령했으며, 長嶺府, 鴨綠府를 공격하여 중원과의 연대와 扶餘府로의 군사적 지원을 끊어내는 전략을 펼쳤다.
거란의 이러한 군사전략으로 인하여 발해에는 혼란이 가속화되었고, 이틈을 타 태조는 거란 본대를 이끌고 부여부로 진격하여 926년 1월 扶餘城과 上京 忽汗城을 속전속결로 함락시켰다. 이는 철리부와 동평부 거란군이 상경과 막힐부를 압박하고 또 요동에서는 陳萬 등의 거란군이 압록부와 장령부의 주력군들을 묶어두고 있었기에 가능했던 것이었다. 그리하여 발해는 거란을 막아내지 못하고 결국 멸망에 이르게 된 것이었다. 또한 부여부는 발해의 군사적 요충지였기 때문에 『契丹國志』, 『新五代史』, 『五代會要』 등에서는 발해의 멸망을 부여성의 함락으로 기록하고 있는 것이었다.
끝으로, 耶律羽之 上表文의 ‘離心’은 거란과의 “20년이 넘는 전쟁”의 여파로 발생한 발해의 內紛을 보여주는 표현임이 분명하다. 발해의 이러한 내분도 부여부가 고립되고 상경의 방어가 무너진 불안과 공포로 인한 것이었다. 따라서 발해의 멸망 원인은 “20년이 넘는 對契丹 전쟁”의 충격으로 내분까지 발생하게 되는 등 대내외적인 요인이 복합적으로 발생했기 때문으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The collapse of Balhae has been seen as simply an internal division, but this was the result of the 20 years of war between Balhae and Khitan in the 10th century. Therefore, this paper tracked the war between the two countries from the time Great Progenitor Yaryul-abogi of Khitan appeared and new reviewed the cause of the collapse of Balhae.
The Khitan people were able to conquer Balhae in the “War of more than 20 years” because Great Progenitor Yaryul-abogi established a new military strategy to diffuse Balhae’s military. First of all, Great Progenitor attacked and occupied Cheolli prefecture and Dongpyeong prefecture in the vicinity of Heilongjiang province, which could oppress the Capital and Makhil prefecture. He then occupied Liaoyang in Liaodong, and later attacked Amnok and Jangryeong prefectures to cut off the solidarity with China and military support to Buyeo prefecture.
Due to this military strategy of the Khitan, confusion accelerated in Balhae, and Great Progenitor led the main army of Khitan and advanced to Buyeo prefecture, and in January 926, Buyeo castle Fortress and the Capital hollhan castle were quickly captured. This was possible because the Khitan military of Cheolli prefecture and Dongpyeong prefecture pressed the Capital and Makhill prefecture, and in Liaodong, Khitan military such as Jinman tied up the main forces of the Amnok prefecture and the Jangryeong prefecture. Thus, Balhae could not stop the Khitan and collapsed. Furthermore, Buyeo prefecture was a key military position to defend Khitan, so the fall of Balhae was recorded in 『History of the New Five Dynasties』 and 『Wudai huiyao』, and 『National Chronicles of Khitan』 as the fall of Buyeo castle.
Finally, it is clear that the “detachment from one’s mind(離心)” contained in the document of Yaryul-wuji is an expression showing the internal division of Balhae in the aftermath of the “20-year war” with the Khitan. This division in Balhae was also due to anxiety and fear in which Buyeo prefecture was isolated and the defense of the Capital collapsed. Therefore, it is believed that the cause of the collapse of Balhae was a combination of internal and external factors, such as internal division due to the shock of the “war on the Khitan for more than 20 years”.
