「圓覺經」에 설해진 本有圓覺과 漸修證의 체계 -圭峯宗密의 해석을 중심으로- (A System of the Inherent Perfect Enlightenment and Gradual Realization in Yuan-jue-jing -Focused on the interpretation of Master Guifeng Zongmi-)

초록

일체 중생들이 갖추고 있는 원각성을 성취하기 위해 수행할 것을 설하고 있는 「圓覺經」은 근기별 수증 체계가 가장 잘 설해져 있는 경전 중의 하나이다.
이러한 「원각경」 연구에 지대한 관심을 가지고 生을 바쳐 노력한 규봉종밀의 사상을 중심으로 논하고자 한다.
본 논문의 구성은 ‘圓覺의 頓信解’와 ‘漸修證의 체계’ 부분으로 나누어서 원각을 증득하는 과정을 논하고 있다. ‘圓覺의 頓信解’에서는 圓覺의 本有함과 無明의 本無함을 논하고, ‘漸修證의 체계’에서는 상․중․하근기의 수증으로 분류하여 논하고 있다.
종밀은 上根機의 수증론을 화엄교학에 의지해서 설하고 있다. 특히 法界觀은 杜順의 「華嚴法界觀門」을 의지해 설하고 있다. 中根機의 수증론에서는 三觀(奢摩他․三摩鉢提․禪那)을 설하고, 또 이 삼관을 홑[單修]으로 닦거나 겹[複修]으로 닦는 25輪을 시설하고 있다. 下根機의 수증론에서는 도량을 꾸미고, 기간을 정하여, 加行하는 관법을 別修三觀․遍修三觀․互修三觀으로 나누어 논하고 있다.
이와 같이 「원각경」은 本有圓覺이며 本無無明임을 단박에 信解하는 頓機의 중생을 위해 설해진 경전이지만 점차로 수행하는 漸機의 중생도 포섭한다고 설하고 있어서 각각의 근기에 알맞은 모든 수행법을 다 설하여 회통시키고 있는 경전임을 논하고 있다.

영어초록

The Yuan-jue-jing (圓覺經, The sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment) explains that all beings have the nature of perfect enlightenment, but the ignorance (Avidyā) appeared suddenly and the illusory mind comes to them. The sūtra teaches all beings to practice for going back to the originally pure state of the perfect enlightenment through removing the illusory mind.
This thesis will study the theory of cultivation and realization in the Yuan-jue-jing pivoting on the thought of Master Guifeng Zongmi who had a great interest in the Yuan-jue-jing early and tried so hard to interpret it.
The Buddha said various methods of practices and teachings, so the Yuan-jue-jing is one of few sūtras considered to describe minutely the system of cultivation and realization according to the spiritual abilities of high, medium, and low. This thesis will be divided into two categories and treat process how to gain the perfect enlightenment. The first part is the sudden faith and understanding (頓信解) of the perfect enlightenment, so it discusses the original existence (本有) of the perfect enlightenment and the original existence of ignorance. The second part is the gradual cultivation and realization of the perfect enlightenment, then it deals with the theory of cultivation and realization of high, medium, and low capacity.
Zongmi teaches the theory of cultivation and realization of the high spiritual ability by the Huayan teaching. He especially explained the insight of Dharma-realm depending on the Hua-yan-fa-jie-guan-men (華嚴法界觀門 Insight of Hua-yan Dharma-realm) written by Master Dushun. Then He accounted for the three kinds of contemplations (三觀-śamatha, samāpatti, dhyāna) and the twenty-five wheels in the medium spiritual ability. Also, in the low spiritual ability, he suggested what to do for the extinction of karmic obstacles such as adorning the practicing site, the repentance in front of the Buddha and so on.
Thus, the Dharma is the one flavor, but there is difference between practitioners. Therefore this thesis will analysis that the Yuan-jue-jing proposes the suitable ways of practice for each spiritual ability.
