1943년 박태원의 신체제 수용 방식과 서사의 파탄-국립한국문학관 발굴작 『아름다운 봄』 연구 (Park, Tae-won’s Reception of the New Order and Inconsistencies of Narrative in 1943-A Study on A Beautiful Spring)

초록

이 글은 국립한국문학관에서 최근 발굴한 박태원의 장편소설 『아름다운 봄』(영창서관, 1943)을 개관하며, 일제 말기 1943년의 시점에서 박태원의 신체제 인식과 체제 협력의 서사적 논리를 재구성하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『아름다운 봄』은 중편 「사계와 남매」(1941)의 개작으로, 「사계와 남매」의 사건 및 인물은 물론 서술까지를 거의 그대로 차용하는 한편, 여기에 새로운 인물들 및 이들과 관련한 사건들을 추가하는 형태로 개작이 이루어졌다. 이러한 개작을 통해 이 작품은 그간 알려진 박태원의 작품 중 가장 분명한 대일협력의 포즈를 취하는 작품이 되었다. 특히 개작 과정에서 추가된 인물인 ‘아버지’가 일본군의 중국 공격에 종군하다 전사한다는 이야기 전개, 역시 추가된 인물인 ‘귀순이’가 아버지의 전사 소식을 듣고 종군간호부에 지원하여 북지로 떠난다는 결말, 아버지의 종군 소식을 들은 주인공 옥순이의 가족들이 흥분하며 신사에 참배하고 ‘이몽부쿠로’를 만드는 장면 등은 문제적이다. 『아름다운 봄』에서 이루어진 이러한 개작은 1939-1941년 사이 박태원의 소설에서 새로운 체제의 질서와의 일정한 비판적 거리감을 두고 다루어졌던 식민지 공공성의 문제를 1943년의 시점에서 다시 소환하며, 대일협력의 논리와의 접합을 통해 그 해결 가능성을 다시 모색하려는 시도로 볼 수 있다. 하지만 이러한 시도가 충분히 성공적이지는 않았다. 개작 과정에서 삽입된 새로운 사건들은 소설의 플롯 구성에 기능적으로 관계하지 못하며, 특히 개작의 핵심에 놓여 있는 ‘아버지’의 종군 이야기는 당대 잡지 기사의 일방적인 외삽을 통해 이루어지고 있다. 또한 작중 이야기-시간의 설정이 모순적으로 착종되어 있다는 점도 문제점이다. 이러한 점에서 이 작품이 신체제의 논리를 새롭게 제시하려고 했던 전망은 철저하게 실패한 것으로, 특히 이 작품이 전통적인 상호부조와 연대를 국가주의에 일방적으로 복속시키고 있다는 점, 이 작품이 중국에 대한 심상지리적 거리감을 드러내며 1940년대 초반 박태원의 소설이 부분적으로 드러냈던 ‘아시아주의’로부터 이탈하고 있다는 점에 주목할 수 있다. 때문에 이 작품이 가지고 있는 서사적 논리의 이러한 파탄은, 1943년의 시점에서 신체제 및 대일협력의 논리를 수용한 식민지 조선사회의 새로운 전망의 창출이 적어도 박태원 자신에게 있어서는 불가능했음을 역설적으로 드러내고 있다.

영어초록

This study examines Park, Tae-won’s novel A Beautiful Spring (Youngchang Seogwan, 1943) recently discovered by National Museum of Korean Literature, and attempts to reconstruct Park, Tae-won’s Reception of the New Order [Shintaisei] and the narrative logic of collaboration with Japan at the end of Japanese colonial period in 1943. A Beautiful Spring is a modification of novella “Four Seasons and Siblings” (1941). It borrowed almost the events, characters, and even the sentences from “Four Seasons and Siblings”, while adding new characters and events related to them. Modifications were made in the form of additions. Through this modification, this work has become the most explicit pose of collaboration with Japan among Park, Tae-won’s works. In particular, the story that ‘Father’, a character added during the modification, is killed while serving in the Japanese army’s attack on China, the ending in which ‘Gwisuni’, an also added character, heard the news of his father’s death and applies for the wartime nursing service and leaves for the north, the scene where the main character, Oksuni’s family excitedly visits the Sinto-shrine after hearing the news of her father’s and makes ‘Imongbukuro’ (comfort gifts) is problematic. This modification in A Beautiful Spring recalls the issue of colonial publiness, which had been dealt with with a certain critical distance from the New Order in Park, Tae-won’s novels between 1939 and 1941, from the point of view of 1943. It can be seen as an attempt to seek the possibility of solving this issue again, through connection with the logic of collaboration with Japan. However, these attempts have not been sufficiently successful. The new events inserted in the modifications are not functionally related to the plot of the novel, and in particular, the story of the ‘father’s, which lies at the core of the modification, is made through unilateral extrapolation of a magazine article. Also, it is a problem that the setting of the story-time in the work is very contradictory. Therefore, the prospect that this work tried to present anew through the acceptance of the logic of the New Regime completely failed. In particular, the fact that this work unilaterally subjugates traditional mutual aid and solidarity to nationalism, and that this work reveals a sense of distance in the imaginative geography of China, breaking away from the ‘Asianism’ partially revealed in Park, Tae-won’s novels in the early 1940s, are able to be paid attention to. In conclusion, these inconsistencies of narrative logic of this work paradoxically reveals that at the point of 1943, it was impossible to create a new prospect for colonial Joseon society that accepted the logic of the New Order and collaboration with Japan, at least for Park, Tae-won’s himself.
