마당극 공간의 구조 및 수행성 연구 -<언젠가 봄날에>와 <삼팔선 놀이>를 중심으로- (A Study on the Spatial Structure for Madang Theater and Performativity -Centering on and -)

초록

본고에서는 <언젠가 봄날에>와 <삼팔선 놀이>를 중심으로 마당극 공간의 구조 및 수행성을 연구하였다. 20세기 후반 유일한 자생적 양식으로 꼽히는 마당극은 그 위상만큼 학계에 관심을 받지 못하고 있다. 이에 필자는 마당극 양식에 대한 연구자들의 환기를 바라며 마당극 공간을 고찰하였다. 연구는 먼저 텍스트에 드러난 공간 구조를 살피고, 다음으로 열린 공간 양상과 공간의 수행성을 분석했다.
두 마당극의 공간 구조를 살피기 위해 텍스트에 나타난 공간을 단위로 표를 만들어 분석한 결과 다음을 알았다. <언젠가 봄날에>는 현재 공간을 중심으로 공간 이동을 한 반면에 <삼팔선 놀이>는 현재와 과거 공간의 비율 차가 크지 않았다. 이는 <언젠가 봄날에>가 5월이 지금도 지속되고 있다는 것과 그 정신 계승을 염두에 두고 현재에 치중한 반면, <삼팔선 놀이>는 6.25전쟁이 남긴 상흔을 다각적인 차원에서 표현하기 위해 현재와 과거를 교차하는 공간 구조를 취했기 때문이었다.
또 <언젠가 봄날에>가 공간을 광주에 한정한 반면 <삼팔선 놀이>는 여러 공간을 비선형적으로 취해 보이는 점이 달랐다. <언젠가 봄날에>가 관객의 인식을 이끌 의도로 5월 광주에 집중한 반면, <삼팔선 놀이>는 6.25전쟁의 전경화를 목적으로 공간을 열어 놓은 결과라는 사실을 알 수 있었다.
한편 두 작품은 망자의 공간으로 막을 내리고 있다는 점에서 공통적이었다. 두 작품의 망자는 관객이 낯설게 느끼도록 행동함으로써 광주민주화운동과 6·25전쟁을 거리를 두고 바라보게 했다. 그럼으로써 망각해 온 역사를 기억 속에서 끄집어내어 객관적으로 보도록 이끌고 있었다. 망자를 등장시켜 당시 학살 만행을 고발하고, 이를 묵인하고 사는 동시대 사람들을 비판한 것이다. 이런 점은 두 작품이 민족극을 표방한 극단의 작품으로서 사회비판적 기능에 충실했음을 시사했다.
이상에서 두 마당극의 공간 구조를 분석하면서 80년 5월과 6.25전쟁이 평범했던 사람들의 삶을 얼마나 뿌리 채 흔들었는지, 또 지금까지도 상처가 치유되지 않은 채 지속되는지를 새삼 깨우칠 수 있었다.
다음으로 열린 공간 양상을 살폈다. 두 작품은 공히 허구적 재현 공간과 공연장 공간이 소통되고, 현재공간과 과거공간도 소통되었다. 뿐만 아니라 삶의 공간은 죽음의 공간과 교감하는 양상을 취하고 있었다. 이런 세 양상은 현재 우리네 삶의 진실을 밝히려는 차원에서, 5·18과 6·25와 관련된 본질적인 객관적인 규정들을, 올바른 비례적 관계 속에서 반영하기 위한 시도였음을 알 수 있었다.
끝으로 공간의 수행성을 고찰하였다. 연구결과 두 마당극은 공간을 자유롭게 쓰면서 다양한 매체를 결합하거나 관객과 함께 공간을 창출해갔다. 이런 수행적 공간이 발산하는 역동적인 분위기는 결국 관객을 사유하도록 이끌었다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있었다.
두 마당극은 개인의 기억을 통해 역사를 재발견하도록 이끈다는 점에서 역사극으로서의 성취를 이루었다. 그동안 우리 연극에서 소홀히 다룬 전체주의적 폭력성을 공간의 확장을 통해 그린 점은 두 작품의 성과라 할 수 있겠다.

영어초록

This study examined the spatial structure for Madang Theater and its performativity centering on the <Someday, A Spring Day> and <Sampalson Nori>. Madang Theater which was considered as the only autogenous style in the late 20th century has not have as much attention from academic circles as its status. Therefore, the study examined its spatial structure, hoping to make researchers be aware of it. For the study, the spatial structure shown in the text, the aspects of open space and its performativity were analysed.
To examine the spatial structures of the two theaters, the spaces in the texts were transformed into a table and analysed them. The results are presented as follows: The <Someday, A Spring Day> showed a spatial movement centering on the present space while in the <Sampalson Nori>, differences in space ratios between the present and the past were not significant. It means that for the <Someday, A Spring Day>, May is still continuing and it focuses on the present, keeping the succession of the spirit in mind. However, in the <Sampalson Nori> the present and the past crossed each other to express traumas of the Korean War in multi-angled levels.
The <Someday, A Spring Day> confined its space to Gwangju while the <Sampalson Nori> used several spaces non-linearly. The former focused on May in Gwangju with an intention to attract awareness of the audiences while the latter opened a space with a purpose of presenting the Korean War as a foreground.
Meanwhile, the two theaters were common in that they ended with space of the deceased. The decreased of the two theaters behaved strange to the audiences, which led us to watch May in Gwangju and the Korean War at the stick's end. So the audiences took out the forgotten history from their memories and looked at it objectively. The theaters accused the brutality of the massacre through the deceased and criticized the contemporary people who tolerated it. It suggested that they were faithful to criticism of the society as national theaters.
We realized that how the May in Gwangju and the Korean War shook life of the common people and the traumas were persistent by analysing spatial structures of the two theaters.
Then, the aspects of open space were analysed. In the two theaters, fictional reproductive space communicated with the space of theaters, and the present space communicated with the past space. As well, the space of life responded to the space of death. The three aspects were intended to reveal the truth of our present life and reflect objective regulations involved with May 18 and the Korean War in a proper ratio.
Finally, the study examined performativity of space. As a result of the study, it was discovered that the two theaters combined various media while using space freely or created spae with the audiences. It has a meaning inn that the Dynamic mood emitted from the performative space made the audiences meditate.
It is suggested that the two theaters are historical in that they led us to rediscover history through individual memories and are successful in that they described violence of totalitarianism through expansion of space.
