임철우의 『봄날』 연구 : 5.18민주화운동 증언양상과 증언을 위한 서사전략 (A Study on Im Chul-woo’s Spring Days : Aspects of Literary Testimony about 5.18 Democratization Movement and Narrative strategies for the Testimony)

초록

본고는 임철우가 『봄날』을 통해 5.18민주화운동을 증언하고 있는 양상을 논의함과 아울러, 그 증언에 대한 신뢰성을 구축하고, 증언된 내용의 사실성(史實性, 寫實性)을 강화하기 위해 활용하고 있는 서사전략을 논의하였다. 임철우는 5.18을 증언하기 위한 의도를 가지고 『봄날』을 집필하였다고 밝힌바 있다. 이러한 『봄날』은 5.18을 역사적인 시각으로 재현하고 있다는 점에서 5.18을 다룬 다른 작가들의 작품과 차별화된다. 따라서 『봄날』에 재현된 5.18민주화운동의 전개과정은 5.18에 대한 사적 연구와 일치하는 측면을 보인다. 『봄날』은 이른바 광주시민들의 도청탈환 이전 단계와 이후 단계를 5.18민주화항쟁의 조직화 여부를 두고 구분하는 시각을 분명하게 드러내 보인다.
본고의 논의는 5.18민주화운동을 도청탈환 이전과 이후의 2단계로 나누어보는 작가의 시각을 파악한 것에서부터 출발하였다. 도청탈환 이전 단계를 재현한 전반부서사와 이후 단계를 서사화한 후반부서사의 차이점에 주목하면서, 동시에 두 단계의 서사에 담긴 증언을 위한 서사전략을 규명코자 하였다. 본고는 양대 서사의 가장 큰 차이점이 소설의 주요 구성요소인 인물과 사건의 관계에 있다고 보았다. 비조직적인 항쟁과정을 재현하고 있는 전반부서사에서는 ‘사건’이 ‘인물형상’을 압도하는 양상을 보이는 것과 달리, 조직적인 항쟁으로 나아가는 양상을 재현한 후반부서사에서는 ‘인물형상’이 ‘사건’을 이끌어가는 것으로 파악하였다. 그 결과 전반부서사에는 즉흥성, 상황성, 참여성과 같은 구술성이 틈입하며, 후반부서사에서는 이러한 구술성이 완전히 소멸한다. 이러한 차이점에 대한 논의의 바탕 위에서, 본고는 작가가 증언하고 있는 사건의 신뢰성을 구축하고 사실성을 강화하기 위해 어떤 서사전략을 쓰고 있는지에 주목하였다. 그 서사전략을 밝히기 위해, 양대 서사의 플롯과 시간/공간운용양상을 상세하게 논의하였다.
이러한 논의를 통해 임철우가 『봄날』을 통해 5.18광주민주화항쟁을 증언코자 한 작가의 기획을 충실히 이행하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 소설로서의 미학 또한 구현하고 있음을 규명할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper discussed the aspects of literary testimony to 5.18 Democratization Movement and the narrative strategies for the testimony through Lim Chul-woo's Spring Days. Lim Cheol-woo said he wrote Spring Days with the intention of testifying to 5.18. Spring Days, written under this plan, is differentiated from other artists’ works dealing with 5.18 in that it represents 5.18 from a historical perspective. Therefore, the development process of 5.18 represented in Spring Days shows an aspect consistent with the historical research on 5.18. In other words, the writer of Spring Days finds the difference between the stage before Gwangju citizens recapture the South Jeolla provincial government building and the stage after recapture the South Jeolla provincial government building in terms of whether or not the uprising is organized.
The discussion in this paper begins with grasping the writer’s view of the development process of 5.18. This paper attempted to clarify the narrative strategies to testify to 5.18, paying attention to the differences between the first half department that represented the stage before the recapture of the provincial office and the second half that narrated the later stage. This paper saw that the biggest difference between the two-stage narrative was the relationship between the Character and the Event, which is the main component of the novel. In the first half of the narrative, which represents the unstructured protest process, Events overwhelm Characters(Synecdochical individual). On the other hand, in the second half of the narrative, which represented the pattern of progressing to an organized uprising, it was found that Characters(problematic individual) leads the Events. As a result, Orality such as improvisation, situationality, and participation appear in the first half of the department, and this orality completely disappears in the second half of the narrative. Based on the discussion of these differences, this paper paid attention to what narrative strategies are being used to build credibility and strengthen the Historical Authenticity/Reality of the 5.18 the author is testifying. In order to reveal the narrative strategies, this paper discussed in detail the plot and space/time management patterns of the two-stage narrative.
Through these discussions, it was possible to clarify that the author not only faithfully implemented his plan to testify in 5.18, but also embodies the aesthetics of novels.
