반발 심리를 활용한 영화의 분노 감정 커뮤니케이션 연구 : 영화 <서울의 봄>을 사례로 (A Study on Anger Emotion Communication in Films Utilizing Reactance Psychology : A Case Study of the Film <12.12: The Day>)

초록

인간의 커뮤니케이션은 감정의 공유로 이뤄진다. 따라서 커뮤니케이션의 성공과 실패는 송신자가 수신자에게 자기감정을 어떻게 전달하느냐에 달려 있다. 분노는 감 정 이입에 많은 에너지가 필요해서 타인에게 전달하기 어려운 감정이다. 이런 이유 때문에 영화는 다양한 커뮤니케이션 기술을 활용해서 관객에게 분노 감정을 전달한 다. 그 중에서 반발 심리로 분노를 전하는 방법은 영화가 오래전부터 사용한 커뮤니 케이션 기술이다. 반발 심리는 저항의 표현양상 중 하나로, 개인의 자유가 외부 압력 에 위협을 받았을 때 발생한다. 이때 반발 심리의 크기를 결정하는 것은 ‘상황적 요 인’과 ‘기질적 요인’이다. 상황적 요인에는 ‘위협의 강도’, ‘위협받는 자유의 중요도’, ‘위협의 범위’가 있고, 기질적 요인에는 ‘자기 결단력’, ‘주체성’, ‘의도성’이 있다.
영화는 관객의 반발 심리를 끌어내려고 관객을 영화 속 사건에 몰입시킨다. 몰입에 는 두 가지 유형이 있는데 ‘몰입이동’과 ‘정보원 동일시’가 있다. 몰입이동은 관객의 정서가 영화 속 사건에 깊숙이 관여한 상태를 말하고, 정보원 동일시는 관객이 영화 속 캐릭터에게 동질성을 느끼는 상태를 말한다. 영화에 몰입한 관객은 피해자 캐릭터 와 같은 가치관을 공유하고, 피해자 캐릭터가 자유를 억압받는 사건과 환경을 반복해 서 목격한다. 그리고 가해자 캐릭터가 피해자 캐릭터를 위협하는 모습을 보면서 피해 자 캐릭터에게 동질감을 느낀다. 이때 관객은 가해자 캐릭터의 불순하고 의도적인 위 협 때문에 분노한다. 하지만 관객이 분노하는 대상은 가해자 캐릭터가 아니라, 가해 자 캐릭터가 지시하는 실존 대상이거나, 그와 유사한 현실의 대상이다.

Human communication is built on the sharing of emotions. Therefore, the success or failure of communication depends on how the sender conveys their emotions to the receiver. Anger is an emotion that requires a significant amount of energy for emotional engagement, making it difficult to convey to others. For this reason, films employ various communication techniques to convey anger emotions to the audience. Among them, the method of conveying anger through reactance psychology is a communication technique that films have used for a long time. Reactance psychology is one expression of resistance, occurring when an individual’s freedom is threatened by external pressure. The determining factors for the size of reaction are ‘situational factors’ and ‘dispositional factors.’ Situational factors include the ‘intensity of the threat,’ ‘importance of the threatened freedom,’ and ‘scope of the threat.’ Dispositional factors include ‘self-determination,’ ‘subjectivity,’ and ‘intentionality.’ Films aim to evoke the audience's reactance psychology by immersing them in the events of the film. Immersion involves two types: ‘emotional immersion’ and ‘identification with the character.’ Emotional immersion refers to the state in which the audience’s emotions deeply engage with the events in the film, while identification with the character refers to the state in which the audience feels a similarity with the characters in the film. Immersed audience members share values similar to the victimized character, repeatedly witnessing events where the victimized character’s freedom is oppressed. As the antagonist character threatens the victimized character, the audience develops a sense of identification with the victim. In this scenario, the audience becomes angry due to the antagonist character’s impure and intentional threats. However, the target of the audience’s anger is not the antagonist character but rather the real-life target indicated by the antagonist character or a similar real-life target.
