초록

이 연구는 임철우의 『봄날』에 나타난 환(幻) 체험의 특징을 규명하고 그로부터주체가 추동되는 방식을 파악하고자 한다. 광주 항쟁에서 일어난 사건의 정황은 단순히 트라우마적 요인을 살필 수 있는 대상이 아니라 주체가 추동되는 방식을 살필 수 있게 한다. 같은 공간에서 다른 입장의 존재들은 자신의 선택과 행동의 원인을 찾고자 하지만 어느 누구도 명확히 파악하지 못하는 결과를 빚어낸다. 이는 환(幻)체험을 통해 나타나게 되는데 절대적 공포 현장에서 빚어진 환시(幻視), 환청(幻聽)으로 재현된다.
임철우의 『봄날』의 서사 구조는 가해자/희생자 입장이라는 이분법적 구도를 벗어나 한 가족 안에서 계엄군과 시민군이 존재하게 되는 비극적 관계를 형상화하고있다. 이는 같은 ‘광주’의 공간에 있으면서도 서로 다른 행동을 재현한 시민군과 계엄군의 대립으로 확장되며 이를 ‘말’과 ‘목소리’로 구분되는 세계인식을 통해 살펴볼수 있다. 의미를 담지한 대상으로서 말-내용은 주체의 신념을 확인하게 하는 요인이다. 계엄군 혹은 가해자로 명명할 수 있는 지위의 인물들은 국가가 행하는 말 즉지휘관의 말-내용을 바탕으로 자신의 행위를 정당화하는 태도를 취한다.
반면 시민군을 추동하는 배경에는 ‘목소리’가 현존한다. 시민들은 외부와 완전히차단된 광주의 거리에서 ‘여자의 목소리’를 듣고 현 상황을 판단할 수밖에 없다. 이때 여자의 목소리는 말 내용을 바탕으로 뜻을 전달하는 의미의 영역에 속한 것이라기보다는 자기-지칭적 주장의 성격을 띠며 내용이 곧 형식이 되는 효과를 자아낸다. 그것은 “처절한 흐느낌으로, 절규로, 애원”의 음성으로 나타나 시민들은 그녀의 말-내용보다도 목소리가 지닌 호소력에 압도당하게 된다.
주체가 현실 판단을 객관적으로 인식할 수 없는 광주에서의 10일의 배후는 국가의 폭력으로부터 자행된 결과임을 알 수 있다. 신군부의 ‘토대’ 세우기를 위해 자행된 사건 과정에서 광주의 시공간은 역사상 유래 없는 환체험의 기록을 남기게된 것이다. 계엄군과 시민군이 각자의 ‘대의’를 향한 전투과정은 국가가 시민의 자율적 공간을 직접 공격하는 초유의 사태를 빚어내고, 시민군 역시 폭력에 의지할수밖에 없는 아이러니한 선택의 기로에 놓인다. 임철우의 『봄날』은 환체험에 압도당한 주체을 소설화했다는 점에서 새롭게 이해되어야 할 텍스트라 할 수 있다.

This research aims to examine the characteristics of illusory experiences depicted in Cheolwoo Lim's “Spring Day” and understand the mechanisms through which subjects are propelled. The circumstances of the events that occurred during the Gwangju Uprising provide not only a subject of traumatic factors but also an opportunity to explore the ways in which subjects are driven. Despite sharing the same space, individuals with different perspectives struggle to find the causes behind their choices and actions, resulting in an inability to clearly comprehend the situation.
This manifests through illusory experiences, specifically in the form of visual hallucinations (幻視) and auditory hallucinations (幻聽), within the context of an absolute atmosphere of terror.
The narrative structure of “Spring Day” by Cheolwoo Lim transcends the binary framework of perpetrator/victim, portraying a tragic relationship that unfolds within a single family involving the military and civilian forces during the Gwangju Uprising. By distinguishing between the realms of “speech” and “voice,” which coexist in the same “Gwangju” space, we can examine the subject's perception of the world. Speech, which acts to maintain the subject's existence, serves as a meaningful object that confirms the subject's beliefs. Those individuals who can be identified as members of the military or perpetrators are forced to justify their actions based on the content of commanding officers' speech.
In contrast, the background that propels the civilian forces lies within the realm of “voice.” The civilian forces or ordinary citizens, completely cut off from the outside world within the confines of Gwangju's streets, can only rely on the “voice of women” to assess the current situation. The woman's voice, rather than belonging to the realm of conveying meaning based on the content of speech, possesses the nature of “self-referential assertion” and carries its effects through its form. It gradually overwhelms the citizens through an impassioned voice transmitted as “anguished sobbing, cries, and pleas.” In this way, behind the 10 days of Gwangju, where subjects cannot objectively perceive reality, lies the aftermath of state violence. The temporal and spatial dimensions of Gwangju, shaped during the course of the incident carried out to establish the foundation of the new military regime, leave behind records of unprecedented illusory experiences in history. The battles undertaken by the military and civilian forces in pursuit of their respective “just causes” result in an extraordinary situation where the state directly attacks the citizens' autonomous space, and the citizens themselves find themselves at a paradoxical crossroad, compelled to rely on violence. The significance of Cheolwoo Lim's “Spring Day” lies in its exploration of the existence of subjects overwhelmed by illusory experiences and their modes of being.
