기술복제시대 예술의 정치적 가능성 -소쉬르의 기호학을 경유하여- (Post-modern art's political possibility in the age of the technological reproduction -Through the semiology of Saussure)

초록

이 글은 벤야민의 ‘기술복제시대의 예술작품’에서 암시된 대중 예술의 정치적 가능성을 모색해보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이 시도의 특징은 예술에서의 아우라의 종말에 대한 그의 유명한 언급을 바탕으로 예술의 기술적 성격을 새롭게 환기시키고 이를 소쉬르 기호학의 철학적 재해석을 통해 구체화시킨다. 더불어 포스트시대의 도래와 더불어 죽음에 처해진 근대 개인주의적 예술의 성격을 쇄신하고 예술의 사회적 정치적 함의를 회복할 것을 촉구한다. 이 과정에서 현대 대중 예술, 즉 복제기술을 발판으로 광범위하게 생산되는 문화상품들의 등장과 부르주아적 예술적 실천의 쇠퇴, 그리고 인문학적 주체의 죽음 문제가 다루어지는데, 이를 통해 소위 포스트-모더니즘적 비관주의나 상대주의 유혹을 돌파하고자 한다. 이를 위해서 플라톤의 국가론에서 제기된 문제의식을 전면에 내세우는데, 당대 비관주의자들의 이상국에 대한 비판이 그러했듯이 이상(ideal)의 실재는 현실에서 의심스럽기 그지없지만 그렇다고 해서 그는 현대인들이 그러하듯이 현실을 거짓된 이상(시뮬라크르)로 대체해버리는 일종의 물신주의로 퇴행해서는 안 된다는 것이다. 플라톤이 이상국에서 추방하고자 하는 ‘예술’은 시abf라크르, 즉 물신주의에 빠져 그것이 꿈인 줄 모르는 꿈을 꾸고 있는 현대인의 자화상이다. 그래서 예술이 진리가 아니라 그저 시뮬라크르임에도 그것의 가능성이 모색될 수 있다면, 그것은 그것이 시뮬라크르임을 아는 탈물신화된 주체, 즉 꿈에서 깨어난 각성된 주체를 요청하기 때문이다. 아우라가 사라진 대중예술은 꿈꾸는 부르주아적 개인이 아니라 각성한 민주주의적 혁명적 주체인 ‘우리’를 일깨울 수 있다.

영어초록

This thesis is to make sure the art's political possibility especially in the age of the technological reproduction. Since Benjamin declared the death of the 'aura' in the modern art, the concept of the art has been criticized and changed, that of the simulacre which Plato had blamed in his 'republics' newly appeared passing through the post-modern application of Baudrillard instead of it. But the simulacre is not negative any more here, even though it was the side effect of the mimesis(the poetic process, so long as it is not oblivious that simulacre is just the fake reality as Plato and Baudrillard said, it was different from the real. The artwork could not be free from the destiny of the dream, for it is available after awakening out of it. In the post-modernism the distinction between the dream and the real disappeared, which could be linked to understanding the fetishism of the technological reproduction widely spreading among the highly industrialized people. The semiology of Saussure could be borrowed to make people isolated of it awakened to the revolutionary subject. That is to say, if the simulacre is like the dreaming, to draw the social revolutionary possibility of it, they need to overcome these fetishism, that is, the learning that this dream is not the reality, and after that they can leap as another subject perceiving the power of that dream. According Freud, the dream is based on the unconscious process of the empty signs. And the teaching of 'the signs of the equivalent differences' in Saussure makes us free from the essentialism of the word(a sort of the fetishism), know that we are so much as the sign or the citizen empty in it, and so get to know that we need another signs, or neighbors even though, or for they are empty, too. The revolutionary subject is not based on the great individual subject but the empty(lost) 'us' that so need to associate each other. And the post-modern art, popular mass art can help us being social subjects. That is what Benjamin had dreamed in post-aura art through 'the artworks in the age of the technological reproduction'.
