초록

Among common French women's traditional clothes, the caraco and the jupon, which were widely worn in the late 18th century, represent the basic shape types of folk costumes in that research on the structures of these clothes is of great historical significance. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the historical data and designs of the caraco and jupon among common French women's traditional costumes for common people in the 18th century. First, during the historical research step, the shapes of clothing that French women wore in the 17th and 18th centuries were examined through the analysis of pictorial materials. Secondly, in the draft stage of the design step, the models to be produced were designed by referring to the historical data. These data could be helpful for model production, including pictorial materials, previous studies on preserved costumes, fabrics, reproduction, and pattern books. The production stage consisted of a series of processes, such as the determination of the shape and material of the model, pattern making and sewing, and, after a review of the clothes’ fit, completion. The data of 28 drawings and 128 engravings were collected and analyzed to shed light on the shapes of the caraco and jupon. For this purpose, reference materials, such as pictorial materials, previous research on preserved costumes and fabrics, and pattern books were used. Although it is a meaningful outcome of this study that common French women's traditional clothes in the 17th and 18th centuries were newly designed and produced based on historical research focused on the shapes of the clothes, the difficulty in historical research due to a lack of basic data resulted in some limitations of this study.
