유길준 『서유견문』과 嚴復 『天演論』의 ‘國家富強’ 상상 비교 (The Comparation of the Imaginary Appearance of the Nation’s Prosperity Shown in You Gil-joon’s 『SeoYouGyeonMun』 and Yan fu’s 『Tianyanlun』)

초록

본 논문은 19세기 말 비슷한 시기에 출판된 조선 개화파 유길준의 『서유견문』과 중국 維新派 嚴復의 『天演論』의 텍스트 비교를 통해 당시 개혁파 지식인들의 저작을 통해 드러낸 국가부강에 대한 상상의 구체적인 면모를 살펴보았다. 저자인 유길준과 嚴復은 모두 과거제에서 이탈하여 서방교육과 학문을 받아들인 새로운 부류의 지식인이었지만 실제 저작 서술에 있어서는 완전히 혁신적이라고 할 수는 없었다. 우선 그들은 실제 정치에 관여할 수 있는 사대부 계층을 저작의 독자 계층이자 국가부강을 위한 개혁의 주체로 삼고, 이들에게 효과적으로 저작을 보급하기 위하여, 중도개량적인 특성을 가진 ‘서면어’와 번역에 자기 논의를 더한 ‘해석적 번역’이라는 글쓰기 방식을 선택하였다. 그들은 이러한 저술전략을 바탕으로 당시 유행하던 ‘진화론’과 ‘문명개화론’을 배경이자 근거로 삼은 각국의 국가부강의 구체적 방향과 관련 정책을 제시한다. 그들의 목표는 그들 각자가 속한 조선과 중국이 당시 ‘민족-국가’로 구성된 세계 질서 안에서 독립된 주권을 가지고서 국가와 국민이 더 진화하고, 더 문명화된 내용을 가지게 되는 것이었다. 이를 위하여 그들이 제시한 가장 구체적인 방책은 학교 설치 중심의 교육 개혁이었다. 그러나 이는 완전히 새로운 문명화된 국가로의 진화라는 목표, 그리고 직분을 중시하고 이에 따른 계몽자와 피계몽자의 관계를 전제한 소극적인 교육 개혁 수단 사이에 이미 일정한 괴리가 존재했으며, 이는 두 저자의 국가부강 상상 실천에 대한 일정한 한계로 작용했다.

영어초록

This treatise examined the specific appearances of the nation's prosperity conceived through the works of reformist intellectuals in the late 19th century, by comparing the texts of You Gil-jun's 『SeoYouGyeonMun』 and the one of Chinese reformers, Yan fu’s 『Tianyanlun』which published at the similar period. The authors You Gil-jun and Yan Fu were both a new generation of intellectuals who had seceded from the imperial examination system and received western education and erudition, but in terms of their authorship, they cannot be said to be completely innovative. Firstly, they regarded the literati and officialdom who could participate in actual politics as the readership of their writings and the main body to be reformed for the prosperous nation. In order to effectively disseminate their works to them, they chose the writing method by the “written language”, which has the moderate improvement characteristics, and the “explanatory translation” with the self-discussion. Based on these writing strategies, they proposed specific directions and related policies for the prosperity of each country, by the theories of ‘Evolutionism’ and ‘Civilization-Enlightenment Theories’ which were popular at the time.Their goal was to ensure that the Nation, where they were belonged, Choseon and China, has the independent sovereignty respectively within the World ordered by the “Nation-State” hierarchy at that time, and enable the country and its people to be more evolved and civilized.For this, the most specific countermeasure they proposed was educational reform, focusing on founding the school. However, there was already a certain deviation between the relatively passive educational reform methods, which based on the premise of the relationship between enlightened and illuminator who value their position, and the goal of evolving into a whole new civilized nation. And this had also become a limitation of the two authors' imaginative practice to the Nation’s Prosperity.
