운장암 금동관음보살좌상의 복장품 연구 (A Study on the Bokjangpum of the Seated Gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Statue at Unjangam Temple)

초록

본 논문은 충남 청양에 위치한 운장암에 봉안되어있는 금동관음보살좌상 복장품의 연구로 금동관음보살좌상의 중요성을 고찰해 보고자 하였다.
이에 따라 먼저 제2장에서는 금동관음보살상 복장 유물의 현상과 분석을 하였으며 제3장에서는 운장암 금동관음보살상 복장품의 의의를 파악해보았다.
그 결과 첫째, 청양 운장암 금동관음보살좌상 복장품인 1610년 「관음중수발원문」에서 중수 주체를 분명히 명시하고 있음은 물론, 관음보살상을 중수하는 목적과 시기, 발원자, 시주자, 발원문 작성자, 화원의 명단까지 중요한 기록을 모두 살펴 볼 수 있어 「조성기」 못지않은 중요한 기록을 파악 할 수 있었다. 특히 수조각승이 ‘석준’으로 밝혀짐으로써 이 시기의 불교조각상 양식 연구에 매우 중요한 단서로 평가되어짐을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 1305년 『금강반야바라밀다심경』은 운장암 관음보살상 조성 당시 같이 안립한 복장물일 가능성이 높아 편년을 파악해볼 수 있는 기준이 되며, 1462년 『수능엄경의해』, 1493년 『묘법연화경』, 1528년 『묘법연화경』, 1873년 『비로자나장엄누각탑다라니』, 그리고 『다라니경』, 등의 복장품을 통해 14세기부터 19세기에 이르기까지 운장암의 역사와 금동관음보살좌상 복장물의 안립 과정 시기를 살펴볼 수 있어 귀중한 자료임을 알아볼 수 있었다.
셋째, 1965년 『청양군지』에서 소개된 것과 같이 운장암은 오래전부터 관음보살의 신앙처로 그 명맥을 이어왔고, 「관음중수발원문」의 내용으로 조선시대 관음신앙의 유행과 왜란이후 피폐해진 사회적 혼란을 극복하려는 의지, 내세의 안녕과 극락왕생을 축원하는 불교문화적인 부분까지 이 시기의 상황을 다각도로 파악할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This thesis is a study on the seated gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue's Bokjangpum (items inside the chest of the Buddha statue) enshrined in Unjangam temple located in Cheongyang, Chungcheongnam-do, and we attempted to examine the importance of the seated gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue.
Accordingly, first, Chapter 2 conducted the status quo examination and analysis of the Chest-inside artifacts of the gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, and Chapter 3 looked into the significance of the Bokjangpum (items inside the chest of the Buddha statue) of the gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue at Unjangam temple.” As a result, first, the subject of statue-sculpturing is clearly specified in the “Avalokitesvara statue sculpturing votive inscription” of 1610, the Bokjangpum (items inside the chest of the Buddha statue) of the seated gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue at Unjangam temple, Cheongyang, and it is possible to see all the important records, including the purpose and time of statue-sculpturing of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, the petitioner, the donor, the author of the petition writing, and the list of painters, suggesting that an important record as important as “the Creation Record” be grasped. In particular, as the head sculptor monk turned out to be 'Seok-jun', it can be seen that it is evaluated as a very important clue to the study of the style of Buddhist statues of this period.
Second, the “Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra” in 1305 is highly likely to be a ceremonial object delivered together at the time of the construction of the Unjangam temple Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, which serves as a standard for identifying the chronology, which let us know of the history of the Unjangam temple and the time of the delivery process of the seated gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue from the 14th to the 19th century through Bokjangpum (items inside the chest of the Buddha statue) such as “Suneungeomgyeonguihae” in 1462, “Myobeopyeonhwagyeong” in 1493, “Myobeopyeonhwagyeong” in 1528, “Vairocana Majestic Pavilion Pagoda Dharani” in 1873, and“Dharani Sutra” which were found to be valuable materials.
Third, as introduced in “Cheongyanggunji” in 1965, Unjangam temple has long been a place of worship for the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and in the contents of the “Avalokitesvara statue sculpturing votive inscription”, it was possible to grasp the situation of this period from various angles, including the prevalence of Avalokiteshvara belief in the Joseon Dynasty, the will to overcome the social chaos devastated after the Japan's invasion, and even the part of Buddhist culture that prayed for peace in the afterlife and rebirth in paradise.
