초록

혈연과 지연은 한국사회의 중요한 작동원리이다. 연구자들은 그 결과물로써 동성촌락에 주목해왔다. 본 연구는 단성호적을 통해 합천이씨들의 상황을 재구성하여 친족집단 구성원들의 공존과 상호 작용을 확인하였다. 15세기 처음 단성에 들어온 합천이씨들은 점차 단성 전 지역으로 퍼져나갔다. 이들은 19세기까지도 지속적으로 이주하였으며, 계층 분화도 거듭했다. 이러한 상황 속에서 동성촌락이 자연스럽게 형성될 수는 없었다. 흥미로운 사례는 동성촌락으로 알려진 묵곡리의 사례이다. 18세기 초부터 묵곡리에서 공존하던 합천이씨와 강양이씨들은 첫 족보가 만들어지던 1760년대 비로소 본관을 통일시키기 시작했다. 이 두 집단은 혈연 관계가 명확치 않아 오랫동안 동족의식을 갖지 않았던 것이다. 반면 읍내의 합천이씨들은 단성의 다른 합천이씨들과 혈연적 관계가 분명했으나 계층적으로 열등했기 때문에 족보에서 배제되었다. 이처럼 조선후기부터 20세기 초까지 친족적 결집과 동성촌락의 형성은 혈연과 지연, 그리고 신분이 복합적으로 작용하는 사회 시스템 속에서 결정되었다.

Blood ties and regionalism have served as two very important pillarssustaining the Korean society for a long time, and scholars concentrated theirattention upon the so-called “same last-name villages,” which were villagespopulated by members of the patrilineal kin or with the same last name.
Attempted in this article is a reconstruction of the Hapcheon Yi kinshipmembers’ situation -through the Danseong region’s household register recordsinorder to determine how members of this kinship group managed to coexistand interact with each other.
The Hapcheon Yi kinship members first entered Danseong in the 15thcentury, and spreaded throughout the region. They continued to move aroundup until the 19th century, and diverged into many social classes. This kind ofsituation would not have allowed these same last-name villages abovementionedto naturally form. The most interesting case to note is the Mukgok-rivillage which is known to have been a “same last-name village.”Members of the Hapcheon Yi kinship and the Gang’yang Yi house, whohave been coexisting in the same Mukgok-ri village since the early 18th century,decided to finally merge their two houses’ regional titles(Bon’gwan) into one(“Hapcheon”), on the occasion of publishing the very first genealogy record forboth of their houses in the 1760s. These two houses had not done so for avery long time, because the blood-relationship between the two houses wasunclear at best, and they had no reason or opportunity to grow a sense offamily. But they decided to do so at this point, while the other Hapcheon Yikinship members who were residing in town of Danseong whose blood tieswith other Hapcheon Yi kinship members in other areas within Danseong weremore than clear, were actually excluded from the genealogy productionaltogether, since their social status was low.
As we can see, since the late Joseon dynasty period through the early 20thcentury, the process of kinship groups or houses regrouping, or the formationof same last-name villages, were determined by a complicated social structurerun by a number of variables such as blood ties, regionalism and social classes.
