김동인의 『야담』 잡지를 통해 본 근대 야담의 서사 기획 (Planning of Narrative of Modern Yadam viewed through 『Yadam』 Operation)

초록

조선전기 成俔의 『慵齋叢話』에서 싹을 틔워 柳夢寅의 『於于野談』으로 면모를 일신해 조선후기 꽃을 피운 野談이 있다. 상품경제의 발전과 함께 신분층의 동요에 따른 다양한 인물군상들이 욕망과 인간관계로 얽힌 閭巷의 이야기들 속에 살아 숨쉬는 야담은 조선후기의 사회적 이면을 드러내고 있다는 점에서 의미심장한 양식으로 주목받았던 것이다. 이렇게 형성된 야담의 문학적 운동성은 근대를 맞아 한문의 퇴출과 함께 사라지는 듯 했으나 1920년대 金振九의 야담운동으로, 그리고 신문과 잡지의 야사와 일화 연재로 재조명을 받을 수 있었다.
이러한 시대적 상황을 배경으로 야담 전문잡지인 尹白南의 『月刊野談』과 金東仁의 『野談』이 탄생하여 1만 독자를 넘는 각각 5년과 10년이라는 장기 간행물로 환영을 받았다. 하지만 당시 근대문학을 이끌었던 문단과 평단의 비판이 끊이지 않았고, 현재의 상황도 그리 나아지지 않았다. 본고는 두 야담 전문잡지의 정기 간행이 단순히 조선 전래의 고답적 이야기를 독서 대중의 취미에 영합시킨 식민지적 통속성으로 이해되는 방식을 지양하고자 한다. 윤백남과 김동인이라는 두 잡지 간행자의 역량 안에서 한문으로 기록된 전근대 기록을 번역해 한글로 소화해낸 수많은 문단 작가들의 참여와 야담 작품들의 성과가 실재하기 때문이다. 본고는 전시대 야사‧야담의 근대적 야담화라는 서사화 기획의 측면에서 접근하고자 한다. 특히 김동인이 1년여의 『월간야담』 참여와 이후 『야담』의 운영과 편집 방식을 통해 야담 전문잡지의 독서층 계몽 사업이자 근대 문학 의식 제고를 위한 대중 기획의 일환을 확인하려는 것이다. 이는 1930년대 문단에서 역사소설은 물론 순문예의 층위에 자리 잡을 수 없었던 야담 독물을, 『야담』의 발간과 편집방침으로 위상을 제고시켜 1만 독자의 독서 수준을 순문예로서의 소설 독자로 제고키 위한 김동인의 미완의 서사 기획으로 이해하려는 시도이다.

영어초록

Korean narrative literature started in Late Shilla and Early Koryo, and can be roughly divided into fantastic novels until the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, full-length Chinese character novels in late Joseon Dynasty according to the Chinese character and Korean alphabet representation system, and novel depicting women's life in Joseon and full-length family novel as a result of creation of Hangeul, Korean language. Adding to the foregoing, there exist narrating styles such as unique work groups of Mongyurok from the mid-Joseon and Pansori novels during the late Joseon Dynasty. As noticeable existences along with them, there is yadam that put forth the bud from Seonghyeon’s 『Yongjae- chonghwa』 and bloomed in the late Joseon Dynasty by putting on quite a new aspect to Yu Mong-in’s 『Eouyadam』. Yadam that recorded stories of yeohang (a village where ordinary people live together) that various characters intertwined with desire and human relations as a result of disquiet over class of social status with development of commodity economy attracted public attention as a significant form in the way that it discloses the hidden side of society in the late Joseon Dynasty. Literary motility of Yadam which was formed in such way seemed to vanish with liquidation of Chinese characters in modern times, but back into the spotlight indebted to the Yadam movement by Kim Jin-gu in 1920s, and serialization of unofficial history and anecdotes in newspapers and magazines. Based on the situation of the times, specialized yadam magazines like Yun Baek-nam’s 『Monthly Yadam』 and Kim Dong-in’s 『Yadam』 were created and got a warm welcome for more than 7 years as prolonged publications having over a million readers. Criticism from the literary world and critics that led modern literature were unceasing, and present situation has not bee improved. Instead of understanding periodical publication of the two specialized yadam magazines as a colonial popular style that accommodated traditional highbrow story of Joseon Dynasty to a hobby of reading masses, the purpose of this manuscript is to access from an aspect of a kind of common planning of modern narrative literature in modern narrative literature. Especially, this study aimed to confirm that Kim Dong-in’s participation in the 『Monthly Magazine』 for more than a year, and operation of 『Yadam』 and editorial method afterward was the business of enlightenment for readers of specialized yadam and public planning for raising awareness of modern literature.
