인천지역 설화를 통해 본 인천의 지역성 탐색 (Study on the locality of Incheon based on its regional Narratives)

초록

설화는 민중들이 향유하던 구전문학으로 당대인의 생활상이나 풍습이 잘 반영되어 있다. 따라서 인천지역 설화는 인천의 지역적 특성을 파악하는 데에 도움이 될 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 그간 채록된 인천의 설화들을 유형별로 분석하여 그 속에 함유되어 있는 인천의 지역적 특성을 확인해보고자 하는 목적으로 연구되었다. 본고에서는 인천 설화를 ‘개국 및 성씨 시조 설화’, ‘풍수 설화’, ‘산 이동 설화’, ‘아기장수 설화’, ‘민속 관련 인물 설화’ 등 5개의 유형으로 구분하여 지역적 특성을 살펴보았다.
그 결과 ‘개국 및 성씨 시조 설화’에서는 비류의 미추홀 개국설화와 강화 하음봉씨 시조설화를 예로 들었다. 비류의 미추홀 개국신화는 주인공의 영웅적 행위가 빠진 불완전한 신화로 이는 실패한 건국이라는 인식에서 나온 것으로 보았다. 이런 까닭에 비류와 관련된 설화의 전승이 전무하지만 한 나라의 수도였다는 자긍심만은 문학산의 안관당 설화 등을 통해서 남아 있음을 확인했다. 그리고 하음 봉씨 설화는 성씨 시조 설화이지만 신화적인 모티프가 있어 인천의 신화로 자리메김할 수 있다는 점을 확인했다.
인천의 ‘풍수 설화’에는 묫자리와 관련된 음택 설화와 수도를 정하는 정도(定都) 설화, 혈맥을 끊는 단혈설화 등이 있었다. 이들은 모두 인천의 지세가 풍수지리적으로 명당이었음을 직·간접적으로 드러내고 있는 설화였다.
인천의 ‘산 이동 설화’는 단순구조형도 있었으나 대부분 건도(建都)와 관련한 산 이동 설화였다. 건도와 관련하여 먼 바다에서 떠내려 오던 산들이 인천에 멈춘 것은 ‘건도참여 좌절형’이기보다는 인천이 한양과 견줄 만한 곳이었기 때문으로 보았다.
그리고 인천의 ‘아기장수 설화’는 우리나라의 일반적인 아기장수 설화의 특성과는 다른 양상을 보였다. 일반적으로 생존형 아기장수 설화는 도성과 먼 도서지역을 중심으로 나타나지만, 도성과 가까운 인천에서도 생존형 아기장수 설화가 나타나고 있었기 때문이다. 하지만 인천의 생존형 아기장수 설화는 생존한 아기장수가 불구로 삶을 마감한 실패형이었다. 이는 도서지역이 많은 인천이지만 도성과 가깝다는 지역적 특성에서 기인한 것으로 보았다.
끝으로 ‘민속 관련 인물설화’에는 손돌 설화와 임경업 장군 설화가 있었다. 손돌 설화는 손돌 추위라는 자연 재앙은 하층민의 반감을 상징하는 것으로 이는 지배층의 진정한 참회와 반성에 의해서만 해결될 수 있다는 것으로 해석했다. 그리고 임경업 장군 설화는 연평도를 중심으로 한 도서지역민들의 주신(主神)으로 섬기고 있었을 정도인데 이는 억울하게 죽은 임경업의 모습이 투영되었다기보다는 백성을 돕고 지켜주는 지혜로운 은인으로 형상화되었다고 보았다.

영어초록

Narratives, the oral literature which was enjoyed by the public, reflect the life style and customs at that time people enjoyed them, which can be said that the narratives of Incheon help us to recognize the locality of Incheon in those times. So the purpose of this study is to find out the locality of Incheon which was embodied in the narratives of Incheon after categorizing the narratives depending on their style of contents. In this study, the narratives are categorized into 5 sections as followings: the one dealing with opening a nation and the progenitor, the one dealing with feng shui, the one dealing with the relocation of the mountain, the one dealing with the inborn infant super-hero, and the one related with the legendary character.
In the case of the narrative of opening a nation and its progenitor, the narrative of ‘Michuhol(彌鄒忽)’ by Biryu(沸流) and the narrative of Haum(河陰) Bong(奉) – a family name in Korea – were taken as examples. The narrative of Michuhol by Biryu is, without his heroic actions, regarded as an imperfect one, which seems to result from the concept that Biryu failed to open a new nation. So it is hard to find the clue on the Biryu’s narrative, but the locality of they having been the capital of a nation is now shown as a proud of the region which was shown in Ankwandang(安官堂) narrative in Munhak(文鶴) mountain. Although the narrative of Haum bong was the one related to the progenitor, it can be confirmed that the narrative has its position as a narrative of Incheon due to its containing the narrative motif.
The feng shui narratives of Incheon consist of ‘Umteak(陰宅)’ narrative which is choosing the right place of the tomb for their ancestor, ‘Jungdo(定都)’ narratives which is to determine the place of the capital of a nation, and ‘Danhyul(斷血)’ narrative which interrupt the stream of land power. All of these narratives reflects that the narratives believed that the feng shui of Incheon was proper for using it as a foundation for everything.
Even though there were some simple structural narratives among the narrative about the relocation of the mountain, almost all the narratives about this topic were related with the foundation of a nation. In some narratives related founding a nation, some mountains stoped floating on the sea, which did not mean that the endeavor of founding a nation failed, but mean that Incheon was the right place to be compared to Seoul when determining the capital of a nation.
When it comes to the narrative of the inborn infant heros, the distinguished aspects can be found. While generally, the inborn infant heros who were alive could be found in the isolated region such as the islands, it was found near the center of Incheon. Anyhow, the narrative of infant inborn hero proved to be the failure because the hero finishing his life as a disabled one. It seems that the island around Incheon was considered the region near the Seoul, which led to the failed hero stories.
Finally, there are the narratives about Son, Dol(孫乭) and the general Im, Kyung-up(林慶業) in the field of the narratives about the legendary characters. The disaster of Son Dol stands for the antipathy about the lower classes of the people, which means all the disasters were able to be resolved only by the penitence and reflection of the novelty people. Even the general Im, Kyung-up has been worshiped as the major god of those island around the Yeonpyungdo(延坪島), which means that he was symbolized not only as a general who was killed under the false accusation, but also as a helper who kept and guarded his people.
