「經說」을 통해 본 眉叟 許穆의 禮樂論 (Misu Heo Mok's Theories of Propriety and Music(禮樂) Based on “Kyeongseoul” (經說))

초록

본 연구는 미수 허목이 당시의 혼란한 세상을 극복하기 위해 어떠한 사상적 기반을 토대로 禮樂論을 펼쳤는지에 대해 「經說」을 통해서 살펴보았다. 미수 허목에 대한 연구에서 대부분 공통적으로 주장하고 있는 것은 그가 六經을 위주로 古學을 추구하였다는 것이다. 그가 「經說」을 통해서 六經과 禮樂을 중요시 여긴 것은 유학의 본질인 실천과 현실의 중요성에 입각한 것이었다. 미수가 時政을 비판하고 대안을 제시하는 근거는 모두 夏⋅殷⋅周 三代의 至治에 있었다. 이것은 그의 학문이 三代의 至治를 담고 있는 六經을 근간으로 하고 있다는 사실과 불가분의 관계를 갖는다. 그러므로 미수가 현실에 실현하려 했던 정치적 이상은 그의 학문적 지향과 일치한다. 주나라와 진나라의 교체기에 정치가 쇠락해지면서 六經의 治道가 사라졌다. 夏⋅殷⋅周 三代가 융성했던 것은 六經에 의거해서 다스려졌기 때문이고 이후에 잘 다스려지지 않은 것은 六經에 의해 다스려지지 않았기 때문이다.
미수는 古人의 聖經賢傳을 부지런히 읽고 그 내용대로 실천하며 살려고 노력했고 그의 학문적 이상과 정치적 이상은 聖經賢傳을 통한 聖人의 道를 실천하는 것이었다. 따라서 미수는 성리학의 이기론이나 심성론보다는 六經을 통한 덕성함양의 실천적인 측면을 지향하고 있다. 그러므로 天理 性命의 고원한 단계보다는 心法에 대한 논의와 이를 실천할 수 있는 禮樂론에 관심을 두었다. 아래로 人事를 통해 위로 天理에 통달하려 하여야지 躐等을 하면 안 되므로 下學을 중요하게 생각했다. 下學이란 禮樂射御書數와 같은 것을 말하는데 禮樂이 근본이 된다. 禮樂을 통한 仁義의 德을 쌓아야 上達이 되는 것이니 禮樂이 중요하지 않을 수 없다.
禮는 절제로써 仁義의 道를 이루게 하는 방법이라면 樂은 조화로써 仁義의 道를 이루게 하는 것으로 禮樂은 陰陽의 待對 관계가 되어 聖人의 道를 완성하게 하는 방법인 것이다. 따라서 미수는 夏⋅殷⋅周 三代와 같은 禮樂 정치의 이상을 실현하기 위하여 「經說」을 지었고 왕에게 바쳤던 것이다.

This study aims at investigating Ye and Ak (rites and music) theories by Miso Heo Mok, that is, what basis of thought did he seek so as to develop his Ye and Ak theories to overcome the contemporary societal chaos based on the Confucian study doctrine, Kyeongseol (經說). Almost everyone who studies Misu Heo Mok commonly agrees, without any hesitation, that Heo Mok pursued classical studies concentrating on six Confucian classics. Accordingly, rather than analyzing Misu Heo Mok’s Ye and Ak theories only through the theory of Ye (Rites) that caused factional disputes called Yesong (disputes on the codes of rites), this study focused on Kyoengseol found the fact that Heo Mok respected the importance of the Six Confucian Classics (六經)　including Ye and Ak, based on his practical Confucianism and such essential points of Confucianism as practice and realities.
Misu criticized the political situations of the time and proposed alternatives based on the ultimate governing (至治) of the three dynasties: Xia, Shang and Zhou. This is inseparable from the fact his discipline is based on the Six Classics that contain the ultimate governing of the three dynasties. Therefore, it can be said that the political ideals Misu have tried to realize in reality were consistent with his academic orientation. As the politics declined during the Zhou-Qin transition period, the hegemony of the Six Classics disappeared. The nation flourished during three dynasties was because it was ruled in accordance with the Six Classics, and the politics have declined afterwards when it was not ruled in accordance with the Six Classics.
Misu tried to diligently read Confucian canonical text of the sages and live accordingly. His ideals, both academical and political, were to practice the way of sages through the Confucian canonical text. Therefore, Misu seek practical Confucianism of cultivating moral character through Six Classics, rather than Neo-Confucian theory of "Li" and "Ki" or theory of mind-nature. Further, he focused on the study of mind and theory of Ye-Ak, rather than studying highly sophisticated ontological theory of "Li" and "Ki" and discussing heavenly principles (天理) and natures and conduct (性命). He put emphasis on the study of the lower level since it was the right way to master the heavenly principles through studying human affairs from below. Study of the lower level refers to rites, music, archery, charioteering, reading and writing. Ye and Ak, the rites and music, is the basis of the lower level studies, and it is important because only through the rites and music, one can gain virtue of benevolence and righteousness and get through to the higher level.
The rites achieves the benevolence and righteousness by moderation and music achieves them by harmony. Like Yin and Yang, rites and music compliments each other and achieve the way of sages. Therefore, Misu wrote Kyeongseol to realize the ideals of Ye and Ak governing like it was governed in the three dynasties of Xia, Shang and Zhou, and dedicated the book to the king.
