축성술을 통해 본 북한산성의 유산가치 (The Wall Construction Method of Bukhansanseong Fortress & It’s Outstanding Universal Value)

초록

이글은 북한산성 성제의 원인과 배경을 알아보고 이것이 북한산성의 보존활용을 위해 추진중인 세계유산등재에 활용 가능한 논리를 제공하기 위해 쓰였다. 북한산성은 국가의 보장지처로 숙종대 전면 신축된 성곽으로 당시의 축성술을 고스란히 반영하고 있는 대표적 산성이다. 한양도성의 개축 직후 축성된 북한산성은 한양도성에서 태동한 소성석 쌓기 축성술이 전면적으로 채택되었다. 소성석 축성술은 조선후기 고용노동의 성립과 더불어 완성된 새로운 축성방식으로서 이전시기의 축성방식과 확연한 차이를 보이고 있다. 따라서 조선시대 성곽의 성제는 북한산성의 축성을 기점으로 그 이전과 이후로 구분된다고 볼 수 있다. 북한산성은 처음 축성된 이후 한 번도 전면수축을 한 사실이 없기 때문에 초축당시의 성제를 고스란히 갖추고 있는 표본이다. 따라서 북한산성은 조선후기 성제 변화를 보여주는 중요한 증거물로서의 역할을 한다.
잘 알려진 것처럼 북한산성의 성벽은 전축, 반축, 반반축, 지축여장 등 서로 다른 높이로 축성되었다. 그리고 여장은 철여장을 갖춘 지점과 평여장으로 축성된 지점으로 나뉘고 있다. 이러한 성벽 높이나 여장 구조의 다양성은 북한산성을 수비하기 위해 사용된 화포의 특성에서 기인하는 것으로 보았다. 북한산성을 수비하는 화포는 조선의 전통적인 총통류를 배제하고 중국으로부터 들어온 불랑기, 목모포, 위원포 등의 화기를 사용했다. 성벽높이가 낮아지게 된 배경으로 화포의 효율적인 활용을 위한 것으로 파악했고 평여장은 화포사용으로 인한 아군끼리의 피해를 방지하고자 하는 목적으로 사용된 것으로 보았다.
논문에서 밝힌 바를 종합해 볼 때 북한산성은 조선의 전통적인 산성방어방식과 외래계 화포가 결합된 조선후기의 독창적인 산성이다. 북한산성은 동․서양의 문물교류가 조선에 미친 영향을 축성사적으로 증명하는 증거물로서 가치를 지닌다고 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

The paper explores the causes and backgrounds of the Wall construction method in Bukhansanseong Fortress, and it is written to provide a logic that can be used to inscribe a World Heritage List under way for the preservation of the fortress. Bukhansanseong Fortress is a new fortress built in King Sukjong’s reign as the country's last Keep, and it is a typical mountain fortress that represent the techniques of the time.
Bukhansanseong Fortress was built just after the renovation of Seoul City Wall, and Small Stone Masonry, which was born in Seoul City Wall, was fully selected.
Small Stone Masonry is a new Wall construction method that was completed with the establishment of employment work in the latter half of Joseon Dynasty and shows a clear difference from the previous Wall construction method Therefore, it is considered that the Wall construction method in the Joseon Dynasty is divided into the former and later, based on the construction of the Bukhansanseong Fortress. Since Bukhansanseong Fortress has never been fully constructed since it was first built, it is a specimen with the original method. Therefore, Bukhansanseong Fortress is an important evidence that shows changes in the Wall construction method in the late Joseon Dynasty.
As is well known, the walls of Bukhansanseong Fortress are built at different heights such as full, half, quarter and parapet only. And the parapet is divided into the place built in the convex parapet and the place built in the flat parapet. This variety of wall heights and parapet structures is considered to be attributed to the characteristics of the artillery used to defend Bukhansanseong Fortress. The Bukhansanseong Fortress defense plan did not adopt Joseon's traditional barrel style cannon, but adopted firearms such as Frankish Cannon(Portuguese model Breech-loading cannon. 佛朗機), Wooden Breech-loading Cannon(木母砲), and Wiwonpo Cannon(威遠砲) from China. As the background of the lowering of the fortress wall, I understand that it aimed at the efficient use of artillery, The flat parapet is thought to have been used to prevent damage to our forces from the use of artillery.
To sum up what was revealed in the paper, Bukhansanseong Fortress is an original mountain fortress in the late Joseon Dynasty that combines Korean traditional mountain fortress defense systems and foreign artillery. Bukhansanseong Fortress can be valued as evidence that proves historically the influence of cultural exchanges between East and West in the late Joseon Dynasty.
