This paper aims to explore the necessity for improving the methods of describing the grammar of end auxiliary particles, which are categorized as a sub-class of ancillary particles, or Bojosa, in Korean grammar. This existing classification is attributed to the fact that they behave differently from case-marking postpositional particles, or case-markers, and the elements attached to them are final endings. However, after carefully reviewing their grammatical status as Bojosa, not case-markers, it is found that they function differently from Bojosa as well: They have the telicity to end an utterance unit and the modality to reveal a speaker’s attitude towards a preceding utterance. Considering these unique characteristics, this study argues that they need to be re-categorized as independent particles, not the sub-class of Bojosa. Under this notion, final auxiliary particles in the Korean language can be re-classified into the sub-class of independent particles, which is referred to as modal josa.
