‘바다에서 보는 역사’와 8∼13세기 ‘해양권역’의 형성 (‘History seen from the Sea’ and the Making of the ‘Sea-Areas’ in the Eighth-Thirteenth Centuries)

초록

이 논문은 인간의 역사를 장기적 전망 하에서 전 지구적 시야 속에서 접근하는 세계사 연구 경향 중 하나인 ‘바다에서 보는 역사’를 대략적으로 살펴보고 그 역사방법론적 의미를 그려본다. 나아가 ‘바다에서 보는 역사’가 현재 가지고 있는 몇 가지 문제점을 살펴보면서, 역사라면 당연히 가져야 할 연구 및 분석 단위로서 ‘해양권역’을 상정한다. 그리고 현재까지의 여러 실증적 연구성과에 기초하여 ‘해양권역’의 전 세계적 범위의 형성 시기와 그 범위들의 설정을 시론적으로 시도하여, 8세기에서 13세기에 걸치는 장기적인 국면 속에서 이루어진 7개 정도의 ‘해양권역’들을 제시한다.
‘바다에서 보는 역사’는 지금까지의 대륙 중심의 역사가 가지는 국가사적 전망, 인간 집단의 경계성에 초점을 두는 역사에서 벗어나 유동적이면서 중첩적인 열린 공간인 바다를 중심으로 인간 활동의 역사적 과정을 살펴보고자 한다. 그러하기에 ‘바다에서 보는 역사’는 분명 19세기 근대 역사학의 성립 이후 역사를 독점해 온 국가사의 틀을 벗어나면서, 동시에 ‘계몽의 기획’ 속에서 비유럽 세계의 역사서술을 규정해온 유럽중심적 역사서술을 탈피할 가능성을 충분히 보여주었다. 그럼에도 아직까지 ‘바다에서 보는 역사’가 완전히 이런 국가사적 전망과 유럽중심적 역사서술을 벗어난 것은 아님을 확인하였다. 무엇보다 ‘바다에서 보는 역사’가 내세우는 유럽중심적 역사서술의 탈피가 오히려 근대성의 전개가 내포하는 ‘어두운 면’, 즉 식민성에 대한 의도적인 외면으로 귀결되고 있는 모습 또한 보여주고 있다. 여기서 진정한 ‘세계사’의 새로운 서술이 과연 근대 자본주의가 가졌던 계급성과 위계성, 착취성을 어떻게 담보하며 전개될 수 있을지에 대한 고민거리를 안게 된다.

영어초록

This article attempts to outline the ‘history seen from the sea’, a trend of the World history, and depict its meaning of historical methodology. In addition to that, it sumts the ‘Sea-Areas’ as an historical analytic frame on which the history have to rely, interrogating some problems posed on the ‘history seen from the sea’ now. And then, it determines tentatively when these sea-areas had constituted on a worldwide scale and what their extents were respectively: Seven sea-areas which had constituted over a long time span between the eighth to the thirteenth centuries.
The ‘hsitroy seen from the sea’ has made a effort to break out of the history which focus on the borderness and the hierarchy of human communities, the historical perspective of the nation involved by the continent-centered history, by the exploration of human activities on the sea that is a space with fluidity, multifacedness, and superposition. Thus, it has showd the possibilities that it would escape from the frame of the national history which has dominated the modern historical scholarship since the establishment of the modern history in the nineteenth century, and free the historical writings of non-european regions from the eurocentrism that has defined them under the ‘project of enlightenment’. Nonetheless, it can't be said yet that the ‘history seen from the sea’ liberates successfully from these perspectives of the national history and the eurocentrism. Among others, we can often see that this ‘history’ rather dismiss intentionally the dark side of the modernity, that is, the coloniality by bringing the surmounting of the ecurocentrism into the front as well. Here, we are forced to ask this question: How should the new historical writings of true ‘world history’ charge the class, hierarchy, and exploitation of the modern capitalism?
