해유문서를 통해 본 18세기 서북진의 군비 실태 (Understanding the Military Supplies of Northern Territory through historical manuscript in the 18th Century)

본 논고는 함경도 서북진에서 작성된 해유문서를 통하여 18세기 실제 서북진 진영에서 보유하고 있던 군비의 실태를 살펴보았다. 해유문서 물목에 기록한 순서는 서북진의 보유 물목이 먼저 기재되어 있고 이어 장군파보·사하북보·덕만동보에서 각각 관리해 오던 물목, 특정시기에 별도로 갖추어 놓은 물목, 그리고 실제 남아 있는 군량미순 이었다. 해유문서 이관 목록에 기재된 군비는 궁시류, 화약병기류, 무기류, 신호장비류를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 궁시류는 활과 화살이 중심을 이루고 있었으며, 화약병기류는 승자총과 조총과 같은 소총류가 주요 화기로 사용되었다. 무기류는 검과 창이 중심을 이루었으며, 군사신호를 위하여 사용되는 신호장비류는 순시기(巡視旗)기를 비롯하여 171점에 달하는 많은 수량의 군기를 보유하고 있었다.
현존하는 조선시대 해유문서는 100여건 정도이고 이 중 지방 무관직 관원의 해유문서는 7건으로 매우 적은 수량이다. 연구의 대상이 된 자료는 지방의 무관직 관원의 해유문서 사례이고 더욱이 현전 유일한 함경도 지역의 해유문서 사례로서 18세기 함경도 서북진 지역의 군비 실태를 살펴볼 수 있는 매우 중요한 사료이다. 이 연구를 통하여 조선시대 특히 18세기 북방 지역의 군기 현황과 규모, 군비 실태를 실증적으로 확인할 수 있었다는 점에서 연구의 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study was conducted to survey the munitions history of the northern territory and to investigate the military preparedness of that time through haeyu documents of North Hamkyoung Province, written in 18th Century.
It contains the military supply list of the army in the northwestern region, munitions of bo, separately secured munitions called byeolbi, and rice.
The first items of the military supply list of the army in the northwestern region are inshin and byeongbu and they seemed to be recorded first because they are the most important military supplies when mobilizing the army. According to the list of items transferred recorded in the haeyu documents, they possessed three types of bows (heukgakgung, sanggakgung, and gyojagung) and two types of arrows (jangjeon and pyeonjeon). Considering that the amount of pyeongjeon owned by the army of the northwestern region was similar to the amount of jangjeon, the forward unit of North Hamgyoung Province is assumed to use pyeonjeon a lot. As for explosive weapons, they possessed 62 guns of seven types including daeseungja-chongtong. Firearms were widely used in North Hamgyoung Province since the early Joseon Dynasty. It was found that rifles such as seungja-chongtong were made and supplied to the north territory until the era of King Jeongjo. Critical weapons including swords and spears were found to be very small in quantity, compared to bows/arrows and explosive weapons. As for signal equipments used for military signals, the army of the northwestern region was found to have flags of various colors and musical instruments for sound signals such as drums, gongs, and bugles. In case of defensive equipments, they had shields and caltrops (caltraps). According to the haeyu documents, the army of the northwestern region had 4,998 caltrops which account for more than half of the total quantity of 8,000 caltrops owned by giljumok. In addition to weapons, the haeyu documents contain records of clothes, weapon materials, and military books.
Approximately 100 items of the haeyu documents of the Joseon Dynasty are still left. Among them, only seven documents of regional officials are left. In this study, the haeyu documents of regional officials, which are very significant materials as the haeyu documents of Hamkyoung Province, were surveyed. This study is significant because the military status, scale, and military preparedness of the northwestern region of the Joseon Dynasty, especially in the 18th century, could be empirically investigated.
