性命의 관점에서 본 선진 유학의 행복 관념 (The Study on Pre-Qin confucianism’s Concept of Happiness from Xing-Ming’s perspective)

초록

이 글은 先秦 유학의 행복 관념을 性命의 관점에서 고찰한 것이다. 선진 유학에서 性은 人性이나 本性을 가리키고, 命은 天命을 포함하여 ‘使命’, ‘運命’, ‘宿命’, ‘壽命’, ‘命數’ 등의 의미로 사용된다. 그리고 선진 유학의 행복 이론은 이 양자를 어떻게 규정하고 이해하는가에 따라 서로 다른 두 가지 관점으로 분화된다. 孔孟은 행복의 핵심으로서 도덕적 본성과 인륜적 사명의 실현을 강조한다. 이와 대조적으로, 순자는 禮義로 대변되는 사회적 합리성에 따른 好利적 욕구의 극대화를 행복의 진정한 원천으로 여긴다. 하지만, 이러한 상이한 행복 관념은 상호 대립적이고 모순적이라기보다 상호 보완과 종합의 성격을 지닌다. 실제로 고대 중국에서 지속적으로 행복의 전형으로 간주되어온 五福 사상이나 福德一致의 이념은 이 점을 잘 보여 준다. 따라서 양자의 창조적 종합은 전통적으로 선진 이전부터 계승되어온 ‘生’과 ‘德’의 개념에 대한 새로운 고찰과 검토로 완성될 수 있다. 그리고 이 과정에서 핵심적인 쟁점은 행위 주체의 內外를 기준으로 구분되어온 내면적 도덕성과 외재적 합리성의 관념을 넘어서 총체적 개체성과 기능주의적 덕 개념을 어떻게 확립하는가이다. 이러한 작업은 일차적으로 선진 유학의 행복 관념의 전체적인 면모를 조망할 수 있는 계기를 제시해줄 뿐만 아니라, 나아가 다양한 현대의 행복 담론과 그에 따른 문제점들을 유학의 행복 관념 안에서 성찰하고 보완할 수 있는 새로운 사상적 근거와 토대를 마련해줄 수 있다.

영어초록

This study examines Pre-Qin confucianism's concept of happiness from Xing-Ming(性命, nature and fate)'s perspective. According to the Pre-Quin confucianism, Xing points to ‘human nature’ or ‘innate nature’ and Ming refers to not only ‘Heaven's order’ but also ‘human mission’ ‘fate’, ‘fortune’, ‘life spam’, ‘destiny’ and so on. Regarding how to define and explain the relationship between these two notions, the Pre-Quin confucianism's concept of happiness diverges into two different perspectives. First, Pre-Qin confucianism surrounding Kong-Meng(Confucius and Mencius) explains the essence and foundation of happiness as innate perception of moral instincts and the subsequent realization of those humane values as the source of real happiness. On the contrary, Xunzi perceives the origin of happiness as the inborn desire to pursuit maximization of self-interest and the actualization of social rationality to achieve this end through institutions. Each of these two different notion of happiness has merit as well as demerit and even seem contradictory in terms of contents and characteristics. However, when considering the philosophy of ‘Wufu(five fortunes)’ or Rigor-eudaimohism, that was constantly suggested as the typical model of happiness since the Ancient China, these two notion of happiness hint at the possibility of mutual supplementation and unification. Studying and reconstructing the idea of life and virtue that were actually pervasive even before Pre-Quin period will provide alternative basis and opportunity to materialize the possibility of creative integration from modern perspective. Additionally, this work allows the comprehensive individuality that goes beyond interior-exterior perception primarily classified by the standard of subject, while at the same time, establishes the functional concept of virtue that surpasses the conflict between internal morality and external rationality. Its content and purpose not only provide opportunities to reconstruct the genuine concept of happiness from Pre-Qin confucianism, but also ideological grounds and reasons to complement modern discourse about happiness and its limitations.
