초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West from the perspective of Gnosticism. Cormac McCarthy, one of the most successful and attractive American novelists, expresses his gnostic vision in Blood Meridian. Based on Gnosticism, the world was created by an imperfect god so the world is full of evil, flaws, and despair. Gnosis means knowledge of god in Greek and every human being holds the potentiality of divine knowledge; however, humans are mistakenly unconscious of this truth. As demiurge, a leader of archons, Judge Holden dominates the world and wants to be a “suzerain.” He collects earthly things, writes or paints them in his leathery notebook, and destroys them. Even his pedophilia proves his sovereign power. He also controls archons, Glanton Gang, to exercise violence without feeling any guilt. The purpose of their war is to seek for gold and to retain power over men. The unnamed kid whose role is ‘spirit or pneuma’ symbolizes barely conceivable hope of the world. The Judge recognizes the kid’s innate divinity, so he asks the kid to devote himself to him. The kid’s rejection of the judge’s demonic salvation causes the kid’s death by the demiurge. The kid’s death represents spiritual freedom and from the man striking the fire in the epilogue, McCarthy suggests the possibility of redemption with gnosis.
