출가환경으로 본 미얀마 불교조직에 대한 고찰 (Analytical Study of Organization of Myanmar Buddhism Based on Environment for Renunciation)

초록

본고는 출가환경에 따른 미얀마 불교조직에 대한 지역학 차원의 연구이다. 미얀마는 상좌불교 즉 테라바다(Theravāda) 불교권 가운데 한 국가이다. 그러한 점에서미얀마 불교문화는 대승불교권인 한국불교와 다른 성격의 이문화(異文化)에 해당한다. 한국불교연구 기관에서 미얀마 불교를 포함한 상좌불교의 연구는 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 한국불교학자에 의한 기초적인 연구조사조차 결여되어 있고대부분 오래된 외국의 연구결과물에 의존하고 있는 경우가 많다. 그러한 점에서본 연구는 최신 미얀마 불교상황과 관련한 기초연구에 해당한다. 미얀마의 불교인구는 거의 90%에 달하고 사람들의 삶속에 불교가 내면화되어 있다. 미얀마를 비롯한 상좌불교는 계율과 전통의 계승을 강조한다. 이 때문에 상좌 불교권은 같은 불교권이라는 인식아래 국가 간에 교류를 해 온 오랜 역사와 전통이 있다. 또한 세계불교에서도 주도적인 역할을 해오고 있다. 이것을 가능하게 한 배경과 저력에는 관습적인 출가문화가 있다. 특히 미얀마의 경우 출가는 유구한 역사 속에 보편적인 생활문화로 정착되어 있다. 거의 모든 사람들이 신쀼 등과 같은 단기출가 등을 경험하며완전한 출가로 이어지는 출가 환경이 조성된다. 이렇게 전 국민의 출가환경은 미얀마에서 불교가 정치, 경제, 사회 전반에 걸친 불가분의 관계로 발전하게 한다. 본고는 이러한 출가환경에 따른 미얀마 불교의 조직을 고찰하였다. 특히 미얀마 종교성은 국가기관인데 이러한 종교성의 조직과 역할의 중요성도 살펴보았다. 국가는 출가자가 중심이 된 불교조직을 관리하며 지원하는 것으로 사회통합을 해 왔으며 동시에 견제의 대상이 된다. 이렇게 미얀마에서 출가라는 보편적인 문화현상은 사회통합의 구심적 역할로 작용한다. 이 때문에 출가환경과 승단의 영향력에 대한 이해는 바로 미얀마 사회와 문화를 총체적으로 이해할 수 있는 척도가 된다. 특히 일반사회에서 불교교육을 중시하하는 미얀마 불교는 출가자의 감소문제로 고민하는 한국불교의 출가환경에도 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

This paper is the regional studies on environment of Buddhist renunciation in Myanmar. Buddhist path is often considered an act of renunciation and it is the ideal of religious life. It is most often used to describe the act of a monk or nun going forth into a homeless life to be liberated from lust. Myanmar is one of the important countries of Theravāda Buddhism. In this regard, Buddhist culture in Myanmar is cross - culture at Korean Buddhism. According to official statistics, almost 90 percent of the population practice Buddhism. Buddhism is internalized in people's lives. Theravāda Buddhism, including Myanmar, emphasizes the succession of discipline and tradition. Therefore, the countries of Theravāda Buddhism have been exchanging the same in identity that they are same tradition of Buddhism with one another. It has a long history and tradition. It has also played a leading role in world Buddhism. The background and strength to do this are the customary culture of renunciation. Especially in Myanmar, renunciation is a universally living culture. Nearly everyone experiences the short-term renunciation, such as novitiation ceremony(Shin Pyu). The sāmaṇera ordination of short-term renunciation has an environment that leads to the full ordination(upasampada). Thus, the renunciation experience of almost all people in Myanmar makes Buddhism in an inseparable relationship between every sides such as politics, economy and society and all that sort of thing.
This paper analyzed Buddhist organization regarding on environment of renunciation in Myanmar. There is also Ministry of Religious Affairs as a national institution, and the paper also examined the organization and role of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The state administers and supports Buddhist organizations centered on renunciant monk. This leads to social integration, and the Buddhist organization of sangha is also subject to government checks. In this way, the universality of renunciation culture in Myanmar serves as a central role in social integration. Therefore, a proper understanding of the influence of the renunciation environment and the Buddhist community are needed. This can be said a crucial point of comprehensive understanding of Myanmar society and culture. Myanmar Buddhism emphasized Buddhist education in the general society. By this cultural background, there are many renuncers who are still living culture. Especially in the era of low birthrate and graying, there will be implications for the Korean Buddhist community in low-late of renunciation.
