규칙괴담으로 보는 중국 웹소설의 ‘규칙’ (The ‘Rule’ of Chinese Web Novel Viewed through the Lens of Rule Horror)

초록

Nowadays, ‘rule horror’ is so popular on the Chinese internet that they have spawned numerous related contents such as videos and novels. This study analyzes this phenomenon using two keywords: rule and horror. Firstly, considering that the horror conveyed through concise rules in the rule horror, this reflects a significant accumulation of horror contents on the Chinese Internet and the increasing number of users who have been exposed to them. These users, familiar with horror contents, are able to perceive horror through simple rules based on their previous horror ‘data base’ accumulated before. This study specifically limits the scope of horror contents to web novels and examines how the popular theme of Cthulhu Mythos, which depicts horror from unknown entities, has emerged in recent Chinese web novels. Based on it, this study analyzes the horror in rule horror is horror of the unknown entities, an extension of the popular theme in web novels. Secondly, the popularity of rule horror reflects the social reality of Chinese Internet users, who are becoming accustomed to rules in their daily lives. Based on Emile Durkheim’s argument, which views society as an independent ‘reality’ rather than a mere sum of individual human beings, and presents rules represented by laws and customs as forces that exert coercion over individuals, the study discusses the routinization of rules in Chinese Internet users by examining various examples of Internet slang that have spread on the Chinese internet.
