지혜와 자비로 본 불교의 생태윤리 (A Study on the Wisdom and Compassion in Buddhist Ecological Ethics)

초록

본 논의에서 불교적 세계관인 연기에 대한 검토와 이를 통한 실천의 원리인 생태윤리에 대한 문제를 살펴보았다. 그동안 인간중심의 세계관은 지구 생태계 위기상황을 불러온 것이므로, 생태중심의 세계관으로 전환하는데 하나의 대안으로 불교의 연기적 생태관에 대해 검토하였다.
불교에서는 생명과 세계를 연기된 관계 속에서 상호의존적으로 열려져 존재한다고 본다. 이는 모든 존재들은 서로 상호의존적으로 관계를 맺고 있을 뿐만 아니라 다른 존재와 어울려 살아갈 수 있는 공생의 길을 제시한다. 연기적 세계관은 지혜와 자비를 일으키는 기본 출발점이다. 『법화경』에서는 제법실상의 구체적인 내용을 십여시로 들고 있는데, 이를 통해 생태계를 분석할 수 있는 틀로 제시해 보았다. 또한 실천의 틀로서 자비는 불교적 실천의 기본적인 출발점이며, 동시에 귀결점이다. 또한 모든 사회 활동의 가장 중요한 실천의 원칙이며, 자비 가운데 나와 남을 구별하지 않는 대상이 없는 자비가 최상의 덕목임을 살펴보았다.
지혜와 자비의 틀로 불교 생태윤리를 바라보는데 있어서 우선 불교윤리의 출발점을 계율에 대한 기본입장을 확인하였다. 불교 생태윤리의 출발점을 모든 생명을 존중하는 입장에서 밝혔고, 최소한의 선인 불살생을 통해 모든 생명을 존중하는 기본적인 입장에 있다. 나아가 적극적 실천의 원리로서 생명을 살리는 자비에 대해 밝혀 공존의 길을 모색하고자 하였다. 이는 나와 남을 똑같이 보는 연기론적인 세계관의 적극적인 실천에 있다.
본 논의를 통해 지혜와 자비의 패러다임을 통해 불교가 지향하는 생태윤리는 지혜는 생태계를 이루는 다양한 존재의 내재적인 원리를 규명하고, 자비는 지혜의 틀에 따라 생태중심적인 인간의 실천을 이끌어내는 것이다. 또한 연기적 생태관으로 전환을 지혜라고 하고, 이러한 지혜를 통해 생태적 실천은 자비를 통해 실천된다. 생태지향적인 인간은 지혜와 자비의 실천을 지향한다. 지혜와 자비의 결합의 이중주를 통해 생태적 관계맺음과 실천의 지향점을 자비의 실천에 있으며, 모든 존재가 어울려 살아가는 공생과 조화를 제시하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이를 통해 지혜와 자비라는 관점으로 불교의 생태윤리가 새로운 생태윤리 확립에 대한 논의를 풍부하게 하는데 이바지하기를 바란다.

영어초록

This study examined the dependent origination, the vision of the world in Buddhism and the matter for ecological ethics, a principle of practicing. Until now, human-oriented world view has caused a critical situation in the ecosystem so it investigated the dependent origination-oriented ecological view of Buddhism as an alternative to turn to ecosystem-centered world view.
In Buddhism, life and environment are interdependently open to each other in dependent originated relationship. All things are related to each other mutual dependently and it suggests the way of co-existence along with other existence. The world view of dependent origination is a start point for wisdom and compassion.
In the Lotus sutra, it gives an example of the ten essential qualities for details of the Reality of All Existence. So, this study suggested a frame using this to analyze ecosystem. In addition, as a frame of practice, compassion is a start point of Buddhist practice and, at the same time, a conclusion. It studied compassion, most important principle in practice of all social activities and not discriminating myself and others, is the best virtue.
For the ecological ethics in Buddhism as a frame of wisdom and compassion, it investigated the overall situation of Buddhist ethics toward precepts. A start point of the ecological ethics is to respect all life through non-violation, the least virtue. With those, it tried to find out the way of co-existence by studying compassion, which gives a life, as a principle of active practice. In other words, the way is in the active practice of the world view of dependent origination, treating me and others in a same way.
This study demonstrated that wisdom finds out immanent principles of various existence composed of ecosystem and compassion leads the ecosystem-oriented practice of human being followed by the frame of wisdom. Those things are Buddhism-directed ecological ethics through wisdom and compassion. Besides, it called the conversion to ecological view of dependent origination as wisdom and ecological practice is performed via such wisdom and compassion. Ecosystem-oriented human being directs to practice of wisdom and compassion. With a duet of wisdom and compassion, it meant that ecological relationship and its direction are in the practice of compassion and it suggested co-existence and harmony that all existence lives together. We hope that this study may contribute to that the ecological ethics in Buddhism makes an active discussion for establishment of new ecological ethics in the aspect of wisdom and compassion.
