부파불교 불설 논쟁으로 본 불설의 의미 (A Study on the Buddha's Word from the argument of Buddha's Word at Sectarian Buddhism)

초록

한국불교사에서 불설․비불설 논란이 불거진 것은 1990년대 이후 초기불교에 대한 연구가 본격화 되는 시점부터일 것이다. 이후 이 논란은 최근 권오민이 대․소승의 불설 기준은 전통이나 권위가 아닌 법성에 근거한다는 초종파적 불설론을 재기하면서 다시 촉발되었다. 하지만 권오민의 주장은 그의 의도와 상관없이 초기경전과 대승경전의 친설·비친설론으로 변질되어 한국불교의 종파적 입장 차이만 재확인하는 결과를 낳았다. 더욱이 부파불교에서의 불설론이 제대로 평가되지 못한 아쉬움을 남겼다.
이에 본 논문에서는 우선 초기불교에서의 불설론 제기와 부파불교에서의 불설론 논쟁을 통한 불설론의 정의 및 의미를 살펴보고, 그것이 대승경전 불설론 주장에 미친 영향을 논구했다.
그 결과, 초기불교는 사대교법에 근거한 불설론을 주장했으며, 부파불교를 대표하는 설일체유부 학파의 불설론은 사대교법을 전승 및 확대한 의미에서의 정의였다. 즉 유부는 법성, 은몰, 밀의라는 방편을 통해, 아비달마가 법성에 위배되지 않고, 사라진 경에 있었으며, 은밀한 뜻으로 전해졌음을 주장했다.
또한 유부의 불설론은 무착, 세친 등의 대승불교 논사에게도 영향을 주었는데, 무착은 『대승장엄경론』에서, 세친은 『구사론』, 『석궤론』을 통해서 전승하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 한편, 청변은 기존의 불설론을 인정하지 않고, 정리와 추리에 근거한 불설론을 주장했다. 이는 무착이나 세친의 불설론이 설일체유부의 불설론에 근거한 것이며, 그러한 불설론으로는 대승불교만의 불설론을 주장할 수 없다고 판단했기 때문일 것이다.
불설론은 초기불교에서부터 시작해서 대승불교에 이르기까지 다양하게 논의되어 왔으며, 최근의 불설론 논쟁도 그 연장선상에 놓여 있다. 따라서 앞으로의 불설론이 보다 의미 있는 논의가 되기 위해서는 기존의 불설론을 넘어선 새로운 정의 및 방법이 제시되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The Korean history of Buddhism saw arguments surface over the Buddha’s word (Buddhavacana) or not theory as, after the 1990s, studies on early Buddhism began to be conducted in earnest. Afterwards, these arguments were triggered again as Gwon O-min recently presented the super-sectarian Buddhism theory which says that the standards for the Mahāyana Buddhism and Hināyana Buddhism and Buddhism theory are not founded on tradition or authority but on dharmatā. His insistence, however, regardless of his intention, gave way to the Buddha's real teachings or not theory of the early-time sutras and Mahāyana sūtras, thus leading to the reconfirmation of the sectarian position difference in Korean Buddhism. Further, this regretably led to the Buddha’s word theory not properly evaluated in the sectarian Buddhism.
This study thus examined the arguments over the Buddha’s word theory presented in early Buddhism and over the Buddha’s word theory presented in sectarian Buddhism, and determined the effects of these arguments on the Buddha’s word theory of Mahāyana sūtras.
Thus, it was found that the early Buddhism embraced the Buddha’s word theory based on Mahāpadesa, while the Buddha’s word theory of the sarvāsti-vāda school which represents the sectarian Buddhism helped inherit and spread Mahāpadesa. It was insisted that Sarvāsti-vāda existed in the disappearance sūtras by the menas of dharmatā, antardhāna, and abhiprāya without Abhidharma going against dharmatā, and thus was handed down by the secret.
In addition, it was found that the Buddha’s genuine word theory of Sarvāsti-vāda influenced Mahayana Buddhism masters such as Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, while Asaṅga was inherited in Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra; and Vasubandhu in Abhidharmakośā- śāstra and in Vyākhyāyukti. Meanwhile, Bhāvaviveka did not accept the existing Buddhism theory, but embraced the Buddha’s genuine word theory based on yukti, nyāyā and anumāṇa. This presumably was because they judged that the Buddha’s genuine word theory of Asaṅga or Vasubandhu was founded on the Buddha’s genuine word theory of Sarvāsti-vāda, and that such Buddhism theory alone could not postulate Mahāyana Buddhism's own Buddhism theory.
the Buddha’s word theory has been discussed in various ways from early Buddhism to Mahayana Buddhism, including the recent arguments over the Buddha’s word theory. Thus, for the Buddha’s word theory to be discussed more meaningfully, new definitions and research methodologies beyond the existing Buddhism theories should be presented.
